04/18/2005 03:11 PMSelf-Publishing Looking Better
Self-Publishing Looking Better
04/27/2004 04:11 PMSelf-publishing of books has had a pretty bad reputation for a while.
There were a few success stories, but not many. Now, however,
technology is making it easier and much, much cheaper to self-publish,
meaning that
self-publishing is losing some of its
negative connotation. It's certainly not going to wipe out
professional publishers, who are there for a reason. However, it does
open up more possibilities for people who want to publish books for
very focused audiences, or those who see self-publishing as a kind of
minor league "warmup" for publishing a book the traditional way.
While some fear being inundated with dreadful books, that seems silly.
If the books are bad, no one is going to buy them. Besides, there
are already plenty of dreadful books out there that you never hear
about. A successful book generally requires a marketing campaign that
many individual authors are incapable of doing on their own - which is
why big publishers are around. However, for some authors, doing their
own publicity is a thrill, and gives them much more control over how
their book is promoted.

Political Publishing
Political Publishing
07/26/2004 05:41 PMThe newsmedia are stiff with wonderment at this new blogging thang,
personified by a few dozen of the pesky varmints
really being there (what
a concept) at the Democratic National Convention. Technorati
(disclosure: I’m on the Advisory Board) is trying to
do the bigger picture, and
every time I go to that page it’s interesting; also Br’er Dave
Sifry is going to be CNN’s Ambassador from Blogistan. We could do
way worse. The meta-story is more interesting than the story, almost
by definition; the Democratic party wants to have an extended
tightly-controlled five-day infomercial; the last thing they want is
actual news. The news media will play along to some extent but also be
furiously looking for some real surprise or conflict or subterfuge in
the spirit of if-it-bleeds-it-leads. Two obvious ways the Blogistanis
could make a difference would be by uncovering (unexpectedly) real
news, or by finding some way to make this largely formal and
content-free event a little more human, a little more meaningful, a
little funnier. Best of luck, boys and girls. (PS: While on the
subject of the political process and the Web as a medium, the
Electoral Vote Predictor
strikes me as elegant, seamless, and new.)

Does The Web Have A Publishing Cycle?
Does The Web Have A Publishing Cycle?
07/21/2004 08:22 PMSometimes it's difficult to break out of habits. While newspapers
have a clear reason for having a drop-dead deadline for submitting
articles, and a once-a-day publishing schedule, the web world offers
them plenty of flexibility in when they publish... which they seem to
have promptly ignored.
E-Media
Tidbits notes a
new study showing
many online newspapers stick to a once-a-day publishing schedule.
It's not that surprising that they do this. It fits within their
existing processes, and since many are reusing print copy anyway, it
makes some amount of sense. Still, you would expect them to start to
realize they can publish on a less strict schedule. It appears some
newspapers have made an effort to stay more regularly updated, but
many simply don't bother at all. Of course, in doing so, they risk
losing readers to other sites that are more timely.

Perils of publishing

Charles Herrera sent an email yesterday saying that he has a whole new
impression of blogging after watching the
talk I gave at Microsoft on Monday. It was a gratifying email for
another reason.
He says: "To someone who has read Scripting News since the
start, but who is not involved in scripting or blogging, it has seemed
to me that on occasion you have been forced into a grumpy mode.
Sometimes words on a screen don't always convey the sense of the
person underneath. Of course, the 'grumpy' that I saw, or thought I
saw, comes probably from the flames all around you."
This is worth emphasizing. If you scan an email quickly and
there's a bunch of nasty words with someone's name in the middle, the
mind has a tendency to connect the words and the person. Unfortunately
this is how people read on the Web. Charles noted that I'm a friendly
person, in person. I like to think that's true. Sometimes it's hard to
see that in the writing. I know.
