Camino

Camino 03/13/2003 10:21 AM
It seems that the browser we have come to know as Chimera (or is that Navigator?) is about to change name to Camino. The name is going through legal checks, and Camino will debut sometime soon as Chimera 0.7. No idea what it means, but I quite like it (bearing in mind the other option was iVoyage). { via Mike Pinkerton }

Camino, the browser formerly known as Chimera, has reached version 0.7. Most notable changes are a new Download Manager, sidebar-accessible History and a couple of new toolbar buttons. Do wnload Releas e Notes With Camino becoming ever better and Safari looking like fullfilling it's potential, it puzzles me that Microsoft have failed to respond with any announcements on the future of Internet Explorer for Mac.

Chimera -> Camino

Chimera -> Camino 03/11/2003 09:44 AM

Mike Pinkerton writes in his blog:

When I said we're not soliciting suggestions for new names, I really meant it. Right now Camino has passed the preliminary legal check and they are doing a more in-depth one. Expect resolution sometime next week and the 0.7 release very shortly after.

Doesn't exactly conjure up an image of speed, now, does it? I just think of "El Camino" and imagine something like this.

Not that Chimera was necessarily any better, but Camino just doesn't do it for me.

Speaking of Camino...If you are thinking about grabbing the 20030310 build of Camino, don't. It's crash-a-rific and I'm almost positive it has to do with the flash plug-in. I've already sent in 5 talkback reports today. Just stick with .7 for now. I only mention this because the nightly builds from .6 to .7 were almost always as stable as the point release and the dev guys even advocated grabbing a nightly build in the time between .6 and .7 to fix (among other things) a flash issue. Yes, I'm fully aware that nightly builds are meant for testing purposes only, they might shred your data, people can and do lose money! I'm just sayin'...
