The history of the Linux's Penguin logo. 02/10/2004 02:53 AM

The history of the Linux's penguin logo. Linus: So when you think "penguin", you should be imagining a slighly overweight penguin, sitting down after having gorged itself, and having just burped. It's sitting there with a beatific smile - the world is a good place to be when you have just eaten a few gallons of raw fish and you can feel another "burp" coming. Tux gallery here.

Microsoft's Windows operating system runs on more than 90 percent of the world's computers, a market share that many believe is so overwhelming that no other company can ever hope to challenge it. But maybe a little penguin with roots in Scandinavia is about to do the unthinkable. The Linux open-source operating system, appears to be winning over a critical mass of corporate customers that could ultimately spill over into the broader consumer technology market.

Look Ma, a logo for Fink 10/28/2003 11:07 PM
As you surely noticed, Fink has a logo. This is the result of our Logo contest held earlier this year. This new, official, logo has been displayed since the 24th of October and those of you who wondered how it has been picked and what the name of the winner is should read up in the PR section. The longer explanation also features a larger version of the logo itself, so that you may have a closer look at its details. We like our new logo, we hope that you will like it too. IMPORTANT: We do not yet have a formal licensing agreement for the new logo and so are unable to give permission to distribute it. Currently, it can only be displayed on the Fink web page. Thank you for your understanding.

The Puma "French Pleasure" Campaign: Hoax From felixsalmon.com. via the AdCritic daily newsletter [Gawker got there first, however, on a tip from Me meFirst], comes a meme-hacking story straight from the Anarchist's Cookbook chapter on propaganda of the semiotic deed: the infamous Puma viral-marketing scam. It was Tim who got the official statement from the marketing geeks:
It has been brought to our attention that several unauthorized, sexually suggestive advertisements portraying the PUMA brand have been released over the Internet. We are appalled that images like these would be created and distributed under the PUMA name. As a brand, we seek to take a unique perspective toward our advertising in an effort to challenge the boundaries of our industry; however we would never consider using these tactics. We are in the process of researching the circumstances and reserve any legal steps available.

Folks in the software industry doubt Linux will suffer from the same kind of forking and fragmenting that limited Unix and its ISV support, but the idea may nevertheless be pushed as an offensive against Linux by Microsoft, which is already running ads in Europe depicting mutant penguins assembled with other animal parts as if to suggest they are unsure what they are.

How to spot a trendy logo

How to spot a trendy logo 01/24/2004 11:31 AM
Interesting piece on current trends in logo design (merging blobs, swooshes, pop-art finneals, the color green, wireframes, etc). Though it strikes me that, given my penchant for dinstinctiveness in logomarks that I would be liekley to use this as a crib-sheet for critiquing the logo-development undertaken by my design-firm: "Dude, a green wireframe swooshy pop-art blob? That is so played-out. I want the new-new." Or, as Ian McDonald put it in his brilliant novel, Out on Blue Six:
So I said, like, whazz new, I mean, like new new, not old new, yuh know, like last-week new, so she said, this yulp in the shop, "This is new," like she said, "Cheez, like everyone, but everyone's going to be wearing one next week," like, whazz a yulp know 'bout fashion? Anyway, I thought, well, maybeez sheez right, so, I got one, so I did like, whadyou think? Isn't it wheeeee! like. Isn't it the most? Meanasay, you not got fashion, you not got nothing!
