Microsoft Launches Office Developer
Conference
12/22/2004 01:23 AM
Microsoft plans to hold its first-ever conference for Microsoft Office software developers, the company announced this week. The conference, scheduled for February 2005, is part of a growing effort by the software maker to build a thriving software development community around its popular suite of productivity software.

Though developers have been able to build custom software called macros within Office applications for years, these macros were not typically used to share data between applications. With the release of Office 2003, and its support of XML (Extensible Markup Language) that equation has changed, and the company has begun promoting Office as a platform for writing applications that are integrated with server software, says Dan Leach, group product manager with Microsoft's Information Worker Product Management Group.

Microsoft launches beta of digital music
download service
09/01/2004 06:57 PM
Xeni Jardin: MSN Music launched today. From a CBS Marketwatch report:
Microsoft on Wednesday unveiled details of a new service for downloading digital music, placing it squarely in competition with Apple's rival iTunes music service. Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft will launch a preview version of its new MSN Music service tomorrow that will allow users to legally download songs mostly for 99 cents each. The service will also make entire albums available, the majority of which will cost $9.99, the company said. Microsoft's push into the arena for downloadable music trails Apple's hugely successful iPod digital music player and its own iTunes music service. Apple also charges 99 cents for each song downloaded through iTunes.

There are three basic features for the tool: inserting graphical data objects into PowerPoint, saving graphical data objects for future use, and retrieving saved graphical data objects for reuse. Because the Data Assistant creates a connection between PowerPoint and the host application of the data object (Excel or Visio), you have the option of inserting the data object as it was saved or refreshing it to reflect any changes that were made to the data object.

Apps
01/26/2004 01:10 AM
Microsoft continues to build bridges between Office desktop apps and reservoirs of back-office data. The "Information Worker Bridge" project now under way seeks to make it easier for integrators or in-house developers to make Excel or Word de-facto front ends for back-end accounting, ERP or other applications, sources said. In theory, this would take back-office integration beyond ODBC drivers and InfoPath, the Office application that lets people build dynamic forms on their desktops that tap into back-office XML data.

The Internet can be a great source of information — but have you ever tried wading through hundreds of search results, looking for what you need? You can find more, faster, and save a lot of effort, with a new feature called the Research task pane. You'll find the task pane in several of the Microsoft Office System 2003 programs, including Microsoft Office Excel 2003. This task pane brings you links to online data services created by Microsoft and by a growing number of partners. With a quick click, you can check reference materials such as the Encarta® dictionary. Do you work in other languages? There's an online translation service. When you need up-to-the-minute business data, you can find that in the task pane, too. So quit scrolling through page after page of outdated material from who-knows-where. You'll find what you need right in your Office.
