03/14/2005 06:26 PM
At the end of April at the WinHEC 2005 developers´ conference Microsoft intends to furnish further details on the copy protection functions of the successor to Windows XP Longhorn, which is planned for 2006. The preliminary WinHEC 2005 Master List of Tracks and Sessions under the heading Media Advances for the Windows PC Architecture lists a number of events dealing with the form of control of use known as Digital Rights Management (DRM). One of these track sessions will, for instance, be concerned with the Protected Media Path (PMP), which is to be established for media data in Longhorn PCs.

A Protected Environment (PE), whilst providing a Protected Video Path (PVP) and Protected User Mode Audio (PUMA), will enforce defined requirements on hardware drivers (for TV or graphics cards, say). These channels are to be proof against data theft by rogue software. PUMA runs in the PE, with the PVP even encrypting data transfer to the graphics card over the PCI Express Port (AES 128). A PC´s outlets - in the case of video signals the outlet of the graphics card - are also integrated into the output protection management concept (OPM).

Here Microsoft mentions known output protection schemes such as HDCP, Macrovision or CGMS-A, but also speaks of artificial resolution constrictors. According to Microsoft "significant hardware features must be implemented in graphics chips for Windows Longhorn to support PVP and OPM, with additional larger implications for the drivers." The longer term project PAP is to introduce audio encryption all the way to the audio codec chips.

Boingo and Kyocera Team for Converged
Handset

Boingo and Kyocera Team for Converged
Handset
03/14/2005 05:46 PM
Boingo and Kyocera said they'll work together on a combined cellular and Wi-Fi handset: The device will enable seamless roaming between cellular networks and hotspots. The idea is to support both voice and data services that can continue operating while a user is moving from the range of a cellular network into a hotspot. The phones will integrate Boingo's roaming software for connectivity and authentication to hotspots. Such an integrated device will make it much easier for customers to use voice or other services over Wi-Fi if only because the Boingo application will help with hotspot login and authentication. The press release also is touting the benefit such a combined device will offer to users of higher bandwidth cellular applications, such as streaming video, because such services will operate better over the higher speed Wi-Fi networks. The key to this announcement, however, will be seeing cellular operators choose to sell the resulting device. Most of the combined cellular/Wi-Fi handsets that operators have said they'll be selling so far purposely don't support voice on the Wi-Fi component. Some operators have discussed combined cellular/Wi-Fi PDAs, which would allow users to download a voice over IP client and use it over Wi-Fi but the service wouldn't be integrated with the cellular network. Most cellular operators aren't promoting the use of voice over Wi-Fi, even though most also say that voice over Wi-Fi is no threat to their cellular businesses. Boingo also said that it, along with Kyocera, have joined BridgePort Networks' MobileIgnite Alliance. BridgePort describes the alliance as a group of companies "committed to standards-based, interoperability" of mobile voice over IP convergence solutions. In reality though, MobileIgnite pushes the use of BridgePort's solutions to support the integration of cellular and Wi-Fi networks. While the end result makes more sense than UMA because BridgePort's solution takes the most advantage of the efficiencies available by carrying voice over broadband IP networks, the last time I talked to BridgePort the solution required cellular operators to integrate BridgePort's products into their networks. While possible, I think that BridgePort may fight an uphill battle to convince many cellular operators to deploy a solution that offloads traffic from their networks onto hotspots that are potentially owned by another operator....

Will US Carriers Be Able To Prevent
Mobile Spam?

Will US Carriers Be Able To Prevent
Mobile Spam?
06/30/2004 04:31 AM
Lots of people have been predicting that the next big spam problem is going to be text messaging SMS spam to your mobile phone. While it's already a problem in some countries, some are now suggesting that it won't be that big of a problem in the US -- though, some of the reasoning may be questioned. The first reason given is that US users don't text message as much. The obvious response to that is that the word "yet" needs to be added to that sentence. The trend is pretty clear, and text messaging use in the US has been rising rapidly over the last year. Next, they claim that the US carriers have learned from overseas carriers and are better prepared. Perhaps that's true, but spammers are pretty good about getting around any kind of "preparations." The next reason is my favorite: "Text messages sent from one carrier to another may not go through, because the networks are not always technically compatible." In other words, "because US carriers are so technically screwed up, many spam messages may just disappear -- as may many legitimate messages." Funny that this comes right after the experts claim the US carriers are better prepared to stop spam. If they still haven't figured out interoperability, then how can they really be prepared for text spam? Still, the biggest reason why text spam may not be as big an issue in the US is that many carriers charge for each text message, adding quite the speedbump to any traditional spammer's plans. Unfortunately, though, there are often ways around this, as many phone systems either offer web gateways for sending free text messages or have an email-to-SMS system that will let people send text messages over email. In such cases, the spammer just needs to figure out what email address goes to your phone, and (once again) there will be plenty of mobile spam annoying you everywhere you go.

Marketers Try To Self-Regulate To
Prevent Mobile Spam

Marketers Try To Self-Regulate To
Prevent Mobile Spam
12/02/2003 11:28 PM
Seeing just how bad email spam has become, a group of marketers have come together to agree to a "code of conduct" to prevent mobile spam. With the recent laws against telemarketing and email spam, they're realizing that if they let things get out of control, they'll be next. The code includes (amazingly!) that marketers will only send mobile messages to those who opt-in (unlike the current email law), and promise to provide easy opt-out instructions. Finally (and why they had to put this in shows just how out of touch many marketers are with their job function) they promise that any mobile marketing message will "deliver something of value" to the customer - and not just be blatant pitches all the time. It's a good start, but I'm still cynical enough to wonder whether or not those who agreed to it will really abide by it, and whether or not it will really matter as traditional spammers increasingly send messages to phones themselves. It's easy for marketers to say they'll live by this sort of rule, but as soon as someone breaks the code of conduct, and there's no real punishment, someone else will feel that they need to break it too ("just to stay competitive"). Meanwhile, traditional spammers couldn't care any less about what some marketing group agrees to, and will continue to send annoying spam messages any way they possibly can.

Companies Team Up To Catch Some Phish

Companies Team Up To Catch Some Phish 06/15/2004 09:08 PM
Anti-phishing software is not new. We wrote about it a couple months ago, when it looked like individual sites such as eBay were coming out with their own anti-phishing tools. For the most part, these were only helpful for very specific phishing scams (i.e., those directed at eBay users) and no one is interested in downloading a separate anti-phishing app for each and every site they visit. So, now, a group of tech companies and retailers are teaming up to come up with a standard method of fighting phishing scams. They call it the the Trusted Electronic Communications Forum (TECF) and hope to come up with a more standardized way of fighting phishing scams. Of course, since phishing is mostly a social engineering scam, it's unclear how much help a bit of technology will be in stopping it. The group admits that their goal isn't just to come up with technology solutions, but best practices and techniques to better track down the scammers. In other words, the goal is really just to educate both law enforcement and users about the risks of phishing scams. Of course, if Nigerian 419 scams are any example, it will be quite some time before they can reach those who are most vulnerable to these types of scams.

Ilkone i800: Mobile Islamic Handset 07/12/2004 08:52 AM

ilkone.jpg imageDubai-based start-up IltoneTel has announced their first handset designed for the Islamic community, the Ilkone i800. While the phone itself isn't that interesting in and of itself (it's even promoted as being "moderate looking"), the software provides some interesting and useful tools, including Hijri and Gregorian calendars (including date conversion), 5-method Qibla direction (for determining the correct direction in which to pray), English and Uthmanic versions of the Quran, and alarms with prayer times for more than 5000 cities (including the "azan voice," an audible call to prayer). The i800 should be available before year's end in Bangladesh, Indonesia, Malaysia, and India (but not Dubai?)

Their marketing material is surpisingly fun, too, as you can see.

Cable Companies And Mobile Solutions...

Cable Companies And Mobile Solutions... 12/29/2004 04:10 PM
The fact that Time Warner is looking to add a mobile phone solution (via an MVNO arrangement) isn't a surprise. They mentioned it in March, confirmed it in June and talked more seriously about it in November. So, it's not entirely clear why everyone is making a big deal out of the fact that the company is now talking to Sprint about using their network. Sprint, of course, has jumped into the MVNO market in a big way, providing the network for most of these new offerings, from Virgin Mobile to the new ESPN mobile phone offering. It's also not surprising that cable companies are looking to add a mobile phone solution -- that too many people are calling a "quadruple play," when it's really more about making the triple play mobile. However, what's more interesting is that it finally appears that other carriers are waking up to the possibilities of the MVNO market. While lots of people picked up on the fact that T-Mobile USA wasn't looking to team up with any other carrier, it didn't receive quite as much attention that part of their strategy to stay relevant is to offer their network to cable companies in an MVNO-style relationship. For all of those who were afraid that the Sprint-Nextel merger was going to mean less competition, the market is rapidly filling up with new companies who are simply using existing networks to offer service. While it does raise questions about the network provider competing with its own virtual operators, it looks like there's still going to be plenty of competition.
