Optimistic Gartner Report

Optimistic Gartner Report 02/18/2004 01:17 PM
Gartner says that the number of hotspot users worldwide will grow to 30 million in 2004, up from 9.3 million in 2003: The firm warns that companies should take control of how their workers pay for the service, recommending contracts rather than one day usage fees. Managed service providers like iPass, FiberLink, and GRIC will be good solutions for companies. It goes on to say that alliances, mergers, and acquisitions will be prevalent in the second half of the year. Most of the recommendations in the report seem to point to the lack of unity in the market. Today, companies must sign up for service with multiple operators to get access to the most hotspots. More roaming and interconnection deals will likely encourage more use by heavy travelers....

Survey says Apple employees optimistic
on company’s future
03/30/2005 05:20 PM
Apple Computer employees are optimistic on their company's future, New York research firm Vault has found in new employee surveys on the computer giant. Says a former customer solutions specialist, "The business of the company is doing great especially with the iPod and their innovative designs. However just as any large corporation the large scale structure, the organization gets lost at the lower levels. The micromanagement needs to be but to a minimum and something needs to be done to increase retention and lower the turnover rate which is substantial." A project manager writes, "Apple has its challenges for market share, and will never compete directly with Dell or HP. Instead, the focus is on creativity and the Digital Hub. Products such as the iPod are keeping us profitable during the economic downturn. If Apple continues to develop innovative and quality products like the iPod, then the long term picture should be secure." Another project manager observes, "Apple today is just like any other conservative company. Just managed the service implementation for a new product we will announce at MacWorld 2005. This should be a good year for Apple but it will not reflect in my salary or any kind of bonus I dream of receiving." Vault's employee surveys give investors and jobseekers insight into the company's business operations. Neither Vault nor its employee surveys are endorsed by or affiliated with Apple Computer.

Pessimists Make More Money, Optimists
Still Optimistic On Outlook

Pessimists Make More Money, Optimists
Still Optimistic On Outlook
02/16/2004 02:19 AM
Here's one for all of you pessimists out there. It turns out that pessimists tend to make more money gambling or investing in the stock market (is there a difference?). This isn't really that surprising, because the real story is that everyone loses money - it's just that the pessimists tend to limit their losses, while the optimists believe that they're about to turn things around. Still, it seems that some optimists quoted in the article (as is their nature) aren't ready to throw in the towel, while even the pessimists seem less than thrilled about their lot in life as winners at the gambling table. In the end, it seems that no one wins, except the skeptics who are neither optimists nor pessimists, but don't believe a damn thing.

Google Admits It Was A Tad Optimistic:
Lowers Range, Cuts Shares

Google Admits It Was A Tad Optimistic:
Lowers Range, Cuts Shares
08/18/2004 05:22 AM
Whoops. All the negative publicity seems to have caught up with Google. Beyond delaying the IPO due to the SEC process, it looks like not nearly as many people chose to bid in the auction as they expected. They've now cut the expected pricing range and the number of shares offered. The range is now $85 and $95 and there are 6.1 million fewer shares offered. However, those 6.1 million shares are all from insiders who decided to hang onto their shares at the lower price, meaning Google, itself, is still selling the same number of shares (just at a lower price). While many people expected Google to come in under their initial range, it's still a pretty big drop in valuation. On the whole, though, I think the fact that fewer insiders are selling is a good thing. As I've said before, having insiders sell out during the IPO is a definite sign of trouble. However, now more than half of the original insiders seem to think the shares are somewhat underpriced in the $85 to $95 range.
