Magazines Are So Last Millennium

Magazines Are So Last Millennium 12/05/2003 01:55 PM
A new study in Europe has found that the internet has passed magazines for media consumption, though newspapers and TV still are ahead of the internet. TV is ahead by a long shot, but people who use the web admit that they tend to watch less TV. I'm sure similar studies have been done in the US, where it's likely that internet as a percentage of media consumption is even higher.

A Watch? How Last Millennium!

A Watch? How Last Millennium! 04/04/2005 06:22 AM
Thanks to the growing popularity of mobile phones, more people are getting rid of their watches -- realizing that it's just as easy (and often, more accurate) to just look at their phone. It appears that this trend has watchmakers in full revolt mode, even to the point of suing a wireless carrier because its commercials depicted watches and clocks as being items worth discarding. It's not clear what sort of leg they have to stand on, even in France. It's a shame, really, because the watch often seems like a good form factor to be used for carrying additional (wearable) computing power on you. Already, my watch has an MP3 player in it, and I find that to be much more useful and easy to carry around than a full-fledged portable music device, since I don't have to carry around an extra device. The smarter watchmakers are recognizing this and building in both additional smarts and connectivity into watches.

Webl0g Changes 03/19/2003 10:28 PM

I have decided to split my weblog in two. I basically have two target audiences, those people who are reading this blog for Safari news and updates, and those people who are visiting my personal blog (i.e., friends and family).

This blog will remain the technically inclined one, and I'll continue to blog about Safari news, Web topics, and so on. The personal one (including all personal blog entries) has moved. I'm still ironing out some kinks with Safari (links on the right-hand side don't work), but if you care, you can find the personal blog here.

What is a webl0g? 01/27/2004 02:23 AM
Whenever we update the Sites Drawer (the list of feeds that comes with NetNewsWire) I look at a bunch of feeds and their descriptions.

Here are some descriptions from the list, just to give you a flavor:

Random Ramblings Regularly
Rants, raves, and random thoughts on life and American culture
Rants on spam, business, digital music, patents, and other assorted random stuff.
random thoughts on games, art, geek culture and living in new york.
random and occassionally coherent musings
random musings and explorations from the mind of [withheld]
random thoughts and ramblings

The people have voted! If anyone ever asks you what a weblog is, you can state, with confidence, that it’s random rants, ramblings, and musings.

It is also, on occasion, punditry. And good old-fashioned commentary is not unheard-of.

Why does anyone use Internet Explorer?

Why does anyone use Internet Explorer? 04/16/2005 04:57 AM
Recently, our church made the switch to a new Web hosting service that offered us a database-driven site that we can keep updated through a Web interface. Strangely enough, the Web interface operates only under Internet Explorer, although it appears to be written in PHP. I've tried using the interface with both Firefox and Konqueror. It sort of works, but I need it to really work, so I'm stuck with IE. (Maybe that's why I'm the church's unofficial Web master.) After working with the world's most popular Web browser, I wonder why so many people put up with it.

RIP Internet Explorer?

RIP Internet Explorer? 07/16/2004 04:49 PM
It's hard to imagine that anyone would continue to use Internet Explorer faced as it is with such massive security issues. If it were a car rather than a browser, it would have been scrapped. But despite very good reasons for moving browsers, people still aren't. Why? There are a multitude of reasons but by far the simplest is that average Joe doesn't know what the hell browser security issues are, or even that the browser is just a piece of software used for accessing the Internet. Thanks to Microsoft's spectacular decision (causing it to fall foul of competition law) to bundle Explorer with Windows, people don't know anything of any other browser. To many people, Explorer is the Internet.
