Education Department Puts School Test Data On Web
http://www.fcw.com/geb/articles/2004/0126/web-nochild-01-30-04.asp
http://www.schoolresults.org
This week a new Web site went online as part of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, an education law that had strong support from President Bush. The site displays results from testing of elementary school students sorted by geographic area. The data include statistics about the percentage of students who are economically disadvantaged and the numbers of students who show acceptable progress in reading and math proficiency. Data are currently available for six states--Delaware, Florida, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington--and data from all states is expected to be available eventually. Testing for middle and high school students is not scheduled to begin until 2006. The project was funded jointly by the Federal government and the Broad Foundation, which supports elementary and secondary public education.[Federal Computer Week, 3 February 2004] This site will be added to Education and Distance Learning Resources 2004 Internet MiniGuide.

Junxion Box Puts Cellular Data at
Workgroup's Disposal
06/21/2004 09:02 AM
Junxion Box acts as bridge between growing cellular data networks and the need for ubiquitous, driver-free workgroup access: In today's Seattle Times, I write about local firm Junxion which will shortly ship its Junxion Box, a small device that uplinks to cellular data networks through a PC Card, and shares the connection via built-in Ethernet and Wi-Fi. Think of it like a portable Internet feed. The Junxion Box is driver free in the sense that the company handles the software connection for several kinds of PC Cards to several national data networks. Local users connect via the LAN side--they don't have to install and configure the special PC Card drivers which are available for specific platforms with specific limitations. Temporary work sites and mobile workgroups will benefit most from the system, which is an effective modem and analog line replacement given current cell data speeds. But as cell networks increase in speed and prices continue to fall, it's likely that the Junxion Box's niche will expand as more of a broadband replacement for certain kinds of markets. I've tested a prototype of the Junxion box, and it's just as easy as the company maintains. You plug it into AC power or a DC car adapter. You wait a few moments for it to train up to the cell data network. You connect. Will cell operators allow the Junxion Box on their network, and can they do anything to stop its use? The answers seem to be maybe and no....

Australian education commentator seeks
to ban iPods from schools
04/11/2005 03:12 PM
A report yesterday in The Sunday Mail revealed that taking iPods to school could be distracting children from learning, according to education commentator Christopher Bantick. "If they are playing them throughout the day they are definitely leading to social isolation and a very clear distraction from instruction," Mr Bantick said. "The bottom line is they should not be brought to school, and parents should be aware they could possibly disrupt the learning program of their child." In Sydney last month, students at the International Grammar School were banned from having iPods at school. The device was outlawed "fearing they were distracting students from study and isolating them from peers." Many groups disagree with the claims and don't want to see iPods banned from schools. The Association of Independent Schools, the Queensland Parents and Citizens Association and the Secondary Principals Association believe that individual schools should set their own policy and that a blanket ban is not necessary.

The Texas Miracle

The Texas Miracle 01/09/2004 09:57 PM
More on the Texas Miracle
It was called the “Texas Miracle,” and you may remember it because President Bush wanted everyone to know about it during his presidential campaign. It was about an approach to education that was showing amazing results, particularly in Houston, where dropout rates plunged and test scores soared. Houston School Superintendent Rod Paige was given credit for the school success, by making principals and administrators accountable for how well their students did. Once he was elected president, Mr. Bush named Paige as secretary of education. And Houston became the model for the president’s “No Child Left Behind” education reform act.
After yesterday's fund raising and self congratulatory orgy in Knoxville TN it seems appropriate that the record be examined more closely. No child left behind indeed.

I went to see Shrek 2 today with my son Edward who is 3 next week. He was very excited, he loves going to the cinema. However when the copyright warning about taking pictures and video appeared (the one that Cory Doctorow takes pictures of) he said in a very loud voice "blah blah blah blah", which had me in hysterics if no one else.

James Glassman, most famous for predicting a "stocks are still cheap" 36,000 Dow Jones industrial average not long before the '90s bubble burst, rants here about George Soros, who's said he'll spend lots of money to help defeat Bush's reelection. Glassman cites "the monstrous hatred Soros has developed toward the President of the United States--hatred shared by others in his social circle." Funny how the right wing never was bothered by the absolute hatred that Richard Mellon Scaife and others in his social circle showed for Clinton. Oh right, that old hypocrisy thing again.
