McAfee Sneakiness

McAfee Sneakiness

McAfee Sneakiness 02/10/2004 02:49 AM

I'm noticing some serious sneakiness on the part of McAfee.

I run SpamKiller, and I'm quite happy with it. However, I'm not thrilled with apps trying to check for updates all the time, so I've disabled the auto-update feature.

Recerntly, I installed Startup Monitor. Since then, I've been getting sporadic reports that an executable called MCUpdate.exe is trying to add a registry entry for itself to run on start-up. These would pop up at random intervals throughout the day.

At the same time, I'm noticing a Scheduled Task that refuses to stay deleted. It's a McAfee update job that I delete daily, but that keeps reappearing. What does it run? MCUpdate.exe.

So SpamKiller must check for this task, and re-add it if it doesn't find it in the Scheduled Tasks. Then this task must check for the start-up registry entry, then try to add it if it doesn't find it.

Like I said, sneaky.

McAfee VirusScan 9 Goes After Spyware

McAfee VirusScan 9 Goes After Spyware 07/14/2004 01:44 AM
The question of how to deal with spyware and adware is particularly challenging when programs users desire -- such as Kazaa -- require spyware components in order to operate. In its upcoming release of VirusScan, McAfee is attempting to address that very question. In developing the next iteration of VirusScan, McAfee's software engineers have made it their number one priority to enhance the detection and removal of spyware, adware and other malware. However, detection is only one part of the equation.

Update: McAfee to buy Foundstone for $86
million
08/16/2004 04:23 PM
McAfee has announced that it's purchasing Foundstone for $86 million. Foundstone specializes in technology for spotting and remediating software vulnerabilities. As part of the deal Foundstone's products will become part of McAfee's services, but at $86 million what would you expect.

McAfee will combine its newly acquired technology into its line of security products. The new lineup from McAfee will able to identify and shield users/corporations from Internet/network attacks. A company that for the longest time has only specialized in antivirus products is continuing to break into new markets. If McAfee keeps up this momentum its rival Symantec is going to have some serious catching up to do.

Though I'm not a personal fan of McAfee product I have to applaud the company for continuing to offer its customers better products. With an acquisition like this the McAfee name is now going to get a whole new meaning. Especially as it seems like McAfee is getting ready to challenge the big boys such as Cisco with new network security products.
