Sporadic reports coming in of a brewing problem. Various sites are being removed without webmaster action from Google. They all are getting the standard "you site has been removed" email from Google. We have never seen this particular situation before. We don't know if it is an isolated incident, or if someone has indeed figured out a way to get people removed from the index (such as a competitor).

The San Jose Mercury News is running a somewhat random article about Brew ster Kahle's Internet Archive. While he's been profiled many times before, the one interesting tidbit to slip out this time is that Kahle has asked Google to donate their database to help the archive. He's asking for a six-month old version of the database, to avoid competitive problems. The Internet Archive only publishes material 6-months old or older at this point anyway. Kahle is trying to appeal to Google's claim to want to make the world a better place, but you have to wonder if Google is holding back, in part, due to Kahle's involvement with open source search engine, Nutch. In somewhat related news, the Inquirer has a story about how the Internet Archive needed to get a special exception to the DMCA in order to keep copying certain software files to preserve the software from ending up on obsolete storage systems. I thought this exception was granted a while back, but maybe they're just starting to complain now about the fact they need to go back every 3 years to ask for permission again to save digital items for the sake of history.

An essay I wrote over seven months ago got 300 hits in the past 24 hours.  This was due to a mention at the bottom of a lengthy and compelling rant by Joe Gregorio.  Which was mentioned third out of a list of three items in a blog entry by Tim Bray.  Which was mentioned by Slashdot.

While this doesn't guarantee that anybody actually read my essay yesterday, it does provide an indication that a large number of people actually read every word of Joe's and Tim's.

Audible, Inc. recently announced the availability of an iTunes 4 plug-in that allows Mac OS X users to seamlessly transfer downloaded Audible content to audio-enabled, Palm-based PDAs, such as the palmONE Treo 600 Smartphone and Tungsten, Zire, and Sony CLIE handhelds. Previously, the only available Mac-ready mobile options compatible with Audible's proprietary file format were Apple's iPod and the company's own Otis portable player. An Audible representative told MacCentral that the plug-in is part of the firmware upgrade that you receive when you download the AudiblePlayer for Palm application as part of the Audible service set-up. The plug-in was declared "gold" on Monday and should now be part of the firmware upgrade.

A little over a year ago I started a little Master Replicas case project, trying to fill in the void they created by not offering cases for the Darth Maul saber and Jedi Training Remote replicas. What was first going to be 10 cases for fellow collectors in the forum ended up being hundreds of cases made by the same company that does them for Master Replicas. As such, the fit and finish is identical to the second generation and currently shipping cases. I've shipped all the committed cases and still have a few left.
