only briefly. But in the three minutes that she was in the bathroom of
her home in North Augusta, S.C., Harley slipped out the back door and
into the swimming pool, where he drowned.
Study Quantifies Dangers Of Online Chat

Study Quantifies Dangers Of Online Chat
Rooms (Sort Of)
06/01/2004 03:37 PMOver in the UK, they seem positively obsessed with the dangers of
internet chat rooms. We don't deny that there are dangers, but they
seem to be blown way out of proportion. A little bit of education
from parents and schools could solve an awful lot of the problems
associated with chat rooms (and, in fact, that probably does solve
many of the risks already for most families). Still, it seems you
can't go a day without finding a sensationalistic story about the
chatrooms, and now they're
pushing a new study that claims to clearly demonstrate the dangers of
chatrooms - but it all depends on your interpretation. They claim
7% of kids claim they've met in person with someone they first met
online without telling their parents. First off, that's
7%.
That means 93%
haven't, which seems like a pretty good number.
The article doesn't give many more details that will let you know much
about those numbers either. What age is covered by "young people?"
While it might be a bit scary if your 8-year-old is running off to the
park to meet someone he or she doesn't know, there are plenty of
teenagers savvy enough to be careful about what they're getting
involved with. The other statistic is just as bad:
11% "felt
uncomfortable" during an online chat. Again, they don't define the
age range and they don't delve into exactly what made them
uncomfortable. "Felt uncomfortable" is quite broad. I'm sure if I
went into chat rooms with strangers I'd feel uncomfortable at times as
well, but it wouldn't mean I'm in "danger."
Children: Stop Us Before We Chat Again!
Children: Stop Us Before We Chat Again!
07/14/2004 11:34 AMOver in the UK, they simply can't get enough stories about children
abducted be people after going into online chat rooms. If you read
the news stories, you would think your chances of being abducted about
hovering around 50% these days. Are the abductions a problem?
Absolutely. But, all these news stories focus on blaming the
chatrooms themselves, and not the sick individuals who do the
abducting. All the hype about these chat rooms made MSN decide to
shut
down their chat rooms in the UK in a high profile move last year.
Of course, for those who wanted to keep on chatting, they quickly
moved onto other chatrooms -- many of which were less carefully
watched than the MSN chat rooms. Now, however, comes news of a
completely pointless "survey" saying that
the
kids, themselves, want the chat rooms closed for their own
protection. Excuse me if I'm a bit confused, but if the kids are so
worried about chatrooms... why do they keep going in them? It's
pretty simple to just stay away if you really think it's a problem.
The answer may come from the way in which this "study" was conducted.
It turns out that it wasn't a study at all, but a discussion in
"consultation groups" run by the people putting on this study. Double
blind, be damned! Anyone who knows anything about investigator bias
would immediately question these findings. Basically, you have
someone who wants to get a certain response, and then goes into a
bunch of children for a "discussion," and leads them to provide the
exact quotes they wanted. It's not to hard. A leading question here
or there. A misleading discussion about current events that gets
people worried. Leaving out details or nuances of things. Voila, all
the quotes needed for a high profile "study" that is completely
meaningless.
How Does Blocking A Phone Number Protect
Children In Chat Rooms?
How Does Blocking A Phone Number Protect
Children In Chat Rooms?
06/01/2004 12:01 PMA British mother has apparently won the "top award" at "the world's
largest invention trade show" for
her invention
to help protect her daughter in online chat rooms. That sounds
great, but it's not at all clear how the device she describes does
anything to protect children in chat rooms. Perhaps it's the
BBC reporting, but it appears the device can be used to prevent a
phone from dialing a specific phone number. That's it. What that has
to do with stopping a child from using an internet chat room is beyond
me. The one (fairly small) benefit I can come up with is the ability
to keep a fairly unsophisticated child from dialing up while a parent
isn't around to watch them. After all, if the parents aren't home
already, can't the kids just unplug the device? Besides once they got
online they could just go to any chatroom they wanted. Besides, why
use a device when you could just do it in software on the computer
itself? Finally, with much of the world rushing rapidly towards
broadband, this sort of device becomes even less useful. While the
BBC article suggests the woman may make a "fortune" on the device,
it's not entirely clear why. It seems this is just another attempt to
jump on the fears of parents about what their kids might be doing
online, without being at all useful.

Save The Children calls on release of Iraqi children from jails.
This apparently in response to
recent media
reports on the abuse of children in Iraqi prisons. And it's not
just Save the Children who is concerned, but UNICEF, Amnesty
International, and the Red Cross.
Infact, Congress has called for
a special briefing tomorrow from the Pentagon on
"confidential reports" from the Red Cross on prison
conditions in Iraq. The Pentagon is closing the briefing to the
public, however, and apparently thinks that even Congress shouldn't
know the details of how we treat prisoners.
"It's something of a stretch of policy and procedures
to give them to the Congress," Rumsfeld spokesman
Larry Di Rita said.

The dangers of PageRank
The dangers of PageRank
02/10/2004 02:44 AMA well documented side effect of the weblog format is that it
brings Google PageRank in almost absurd quantities. I'm now the 5th
result for simon on Google, and I've been the
top result for simon
willison almost since the day I launched. High rankings however
are not always a good thing, especially when combined with a comment
system. A growing number of bloggers have found themselves at the top
position for terms of little or no relevance to the rest of their
sites, which in turn can attract truly surreal comments from visitors
from search engines who may never have encountered a blog before.
I know of a couple of entries on my own blog that are attracting
this kind of traffic. The most interesting is probably
this entry on artifical diamonds,
which has attracted comments from both buyers and sellers of
artificial gems. My entry on MSN messenger usability problems from 2002
has drawn a steady stream of hilarious comments, no doubt caused in
part by its top rating on Google for msn messenger sucks. Amusingly, for a
long time Microsoft's own search
engine was giving my page a high rank for a wide variety of less
negative messenger related terms.
My own experiences of this phenomenon pale in to significance to
some of the others I've seen. The most impressive example has to be
Jason Kottke's brief
review of the Matrix Reloaded, which drew over 900 comments from
Google strays, developed its own micro-community and resulted in Jason
pondering who
owns the conversation on my web site? Jason eventually deciding to
close and archive the thread after the page grew to more than a
megabyte in size.
The problem can take on a far more disturbing twist. I won't link
directly to these entries for fear of adding to their predicaments,
but searches for crime scene cleanup and
suicide chat rooms both
return blogs in the first two results. The former thread is mostly
crime scene cleanup companies marketing their services, but the latter
is quite frankly disturbing. It's certainly lead me to double check
the titles of my entries before posting them.
Thankfully, avoiding this kind of unwanted comment traffic is
pretty simple. One way is to simply disable comments for entries older
than a certain time (generally a couple of weeks), although personally
I like to see the occasional comment on old entries. A neater solution
proposed by Russell Beattie last year is to simply hide comments from search engine referrals, thus
ensuring that random strays won't leave their mark without
understanding the nature of your site first.

More on Gmail's Virtues and Dangers
04/17/2004 09:57 AMTim O'Reilly finds much to praise in
Google's upcoming Gmail service, and is much less concerned about the
privacy issues than I am.
We agree totally, however on a crucial issue: preventing data lock-in.
He says:
"The big question to me isn't privacy, or
control over software APIs, it's who will own the data. What's
critical is that gmail makes a commitment to data migration
capabilities, so the service isn't a one way door to the future. I
want to be able to switch to alternate providers if the competition
makes a better offer. The critical enabler is going to be the ability
to extract my data and connections so that I can work with them on
multiple devices, for example, syncing my laptop or phone with my
gmail account rather than having to work only in a tethered fashion. I
understand why gmail doesn't offer this feature now, but it's going to
be essential in the long term."
Amen.
