Microsoft: Cripple IE to Protect Your PC

Microsoft: Cripple IE to Protect Your PC 07/28/2004 09:23 AM
Microsoft is doing something unprecedented: It wants you to break one of Internet Explorer's key features. Why? Because only by limiting the browser's functionality can you be sure of stopping a sneaky--and dangerous--new breed of Internet virus. This latest targeted attack scenario, which uses malicious code dubbed "Scob" or "downlad.ject," exploits three flaws: two in Windows and one in Internet Explorer. One of the holes involves JavaScript; targeting this flaw, the Scob code lets a hacker attach a program written in JavaScript to Web pages. If you visit an infected Web site, the program automatically executes in IE, and voila! you're infected. Taking advantage of these multiple flaws, a group of Russian crackers recently mounted attacks on several hundred Web sites--aimed at putting lots of visitors at risk. Included on their hit list were some very reputable sites.

Microsoft To Buy Disney?

Microsoft To Buy Disney? 02/13/2004 08:06 PM
Friday afternoon merger speculation... As everyone waits to hear who really is bidding on AT&T Wireless, another story is popping up wondering if Micros oft might come in and make a bid on Disney, now that Comcast has put Disney (involuntarily) in play. While it wouldn't be a surprise if others made offers on Disney, and Microsoft could easily afford them, I don't think Microsoft would dare do such a deal. I think they're smart enough to know that it would have a very high likelihood of causing more problems than it helped them solve. It would definitely take them off of their current focus, and they've shown no inclination to do that. Besides, as the article points out, Microsoft already own 7.4% of Comcast, and would own 4% of Disney should that deal go through - giving them plenty of influence. In other words... there's really nothing to this story other than idle speculation on a Friday afternoon.

Don't just protect the unconceived:

Fafnir of Fafblog has written a good think-piece explaining the logical next step in the Bush administration's campaign to protect the rights of the unconceived: protecting the rights of the inanimate.
This is yknow a huge step backwards for women's health and for contraception and the prevention of abortions. But it is a huge step forward for what we at Fafblog like to call the "rights of the unconceived," which is just a few short steps from what we are really lookin forward to which is the rights of the inanimate.

I have personally spent hours an hours talkin to cans, waffle irons, boxes, printer cartridges and forks and they all dream of one thing: no longer bein treated as second-class citizens in the United States.

Eisner
12/02/2003 01:43 AM
Roy Disney has resigned from the Disney Board of Directors, and has sent a scathing email to Michael Eisner explaining, in exorciating detail, exactly why he's leaving the company his uncle founded.
1. The failure to bring back ABC Prime Time from the ratings abyss it has been in for years and your inability to program successfully the ABC Family Channel. Both of these failures have had, and I believe will continue to have, significant adverse impact on shareholder value.

2. Your consistent micro-management of everyone around you with the resulting loss of morale throughout the Company.

3. The timidity of your investments in our theme park business. At Disney's California Adventure, Paris and now in Hong Kong, you have tried to build parks "on the cheap" and they show it and the attendance figures reflect it.

Help name the 50 best sf films

Help name the 50 best sf films 08/31/2004 01:55 PM
Cory Doctorow: John Scalzi (an amazing sf writer and the author of several great nonfic compendia of trivia) is doing a book on great sf films and he needs your help:
As some of you know, I'm currently writing The Rough Guide to Science Fiction Film, which will be a general overview of the history of Science Fiction in films, with chapters on some various themes (science in science fiction, SF film icons, crossover subgenres, etc) and so on. The heart of the book, however, will be the Science Fiction Film Canon: The 50 classic Science Fiction films. In my own brain, I see this list as the list of the most significant science fiction films, as opposed to the "best" or the most financially successful. This gives me latitude to, say, include films that are influential on science fiction filmmakers, but not necessarily the audience (or, vice versa, as the case may be).

(You rightly ask: And why do I get to choose the Science Fiction Film Canon? Well, because someone paid me to, basically. But also, I'm both a professional film critic of more than a dozen years standing, and I'm also a professional science fiction writer. If someone's going to compile this list, it might as well be me.)

I of course already have a preliminary list of 50 films ready to go. BUT! Even with my rather extensive knowledge of science fiction, film and science fiction films, I am more than willing to entertain the notion that my list has gaps: Films that should be on the list may not be there -- films that I have on the list may not deserve to be there.

So, this is where you come in: Suggest me some science films (one or more, as many as you like) which you feel are especially significant. If you want to jot down a sentence or two as to why you think they're significant, that'd be swell (to be clear, any comments you make on films are for my personal edification -- I won't cut and paste into the book. I do my own writing). Any films you might care to think of are appreciated...

A Disney Computer?

A Disney Computer? 08/05/2004 03:50 AM
The Walt Disney Company hasn't been particularly friendly with the tech industry lately, but maybe that's because they think technology is easy. They've apparently decided that, despite the general trouble most companies seem to have with selling PCs, Disney can do better selling their own PC for kids. It will, of course, come with all sorts of "proprietary programs" (would you expect anything else?) and something called "ContentProtect" which is apparently an email and internet filter (makes sense for a kid's computer). Of course, it's unclear how much control the parents will have over that filter or if it's a Disney-knows-best sort of thing. Also, the software will let kids create videos of themselves with the Disney characters, though it seems likely that these will be seriously locked down with copy protection, because who knows what someone might do if they could send around their own videos with Mickey... Of course, if that happened, Disney would probably just call up some of their friends in Congress to pass a special law just for them, while getting the FBI to bust down some doors as well.

Disney and RSS enclosures: 2 m served! 02/11/2004 09:40 AM
Excellent!  Ross Mayfield also reports (via a presentation by Disney execs) on Disneys use of weblogs and wikis.  Very interesting stuff.  It seems that Disney is using RSS enclosures on a huge scale to distribute video:

Using RSS Enclosures to deliver video to 2 million broadband users. Some argue that enclosures don't scale and their not enough bandwidth, but >500M videos have been delivered in less than one year an have been able to scale bandwidth to demand, now moving towards caching at the edge. Most of the delivery is off-peak hours, especially from them to the cable head end, so bandwidth cost is nominal. P2P like Bittorrent and others may broaden this.

Wow!  This is great,It closely parallels our discussion yesterday!  Disney is really on the cutting edge.  This would be very fun to work on.  Given that they use Newsgator, it is likely that Greg may be selling us a bittorrent interface soon.
