02/10/2004 02:47 AMYes
terday I listed the finalists in the FeedDemon banner contest, and as promised I'm
ready to announce the winners.
And the winner is...well, every one of the finalists is a winner!
I found it impossible to choose a single winner among the finalists in
each category, since I could see myself using all of their banners.
So, all three of the finalists will receive a free copy of both
TopStyle Pro and FeedDemon. My thanks again to everyone who
submitted a design, and my congratulations to the three winners
below:
- Olegas Kurasovas
- Albert Tanutama
- Christopher
Owens
Now that the contest is over, I've created a page of
FeedDemon banners and buttons:

If you'd like to use any of these images on your site, please feel
free to do so :)

Banner design contest for graphic
artists: Win a copy of FeedDemon and
TopStyle
01/22/2004 02:40 AM
Despite the fact that I used to be
cartoonist, my graphic design skills are...well, limited. And while
I'm a fast coder, it takes me hours to create even the
simplest images - the banners and buttons I
made for TopStyle felt like they took more time to create than
TopStyle itsef.
Well, I now find myself needing banners for FeedDemon, and I'm
trying desperately to avoid creating them myself. So, here's a chance
for graphic designers to show off their talent and win a copy of both
FeedDemon and TopStyle in the process. Here's what I need:
Two 468x60 FeedDemon ad banners
One 135x100 FeedDemon ad banner
One 120x60 FeedDemon ad banner
All images should be 256 color GIFs, and while animation is fine it
shouldn't be overbearing. For branding purposes, each image should
use some variation of the FeedDemon logo,
which appears at the right of this entry. The contest starts now and
ends January 31, 2004.
Just send your creations to me at info at
bradsoft.com. The four winning designs will
be showcased here soon after the contest ends.

Office Pranks - Bronze Medal Finalists
Office Pranks - Bronze Medal Finalists

Well, I received quite
a few pranks these past few days. Some good ones, some bad
ones—mice in the blender? Come on Emeril!—and here's the
best of the worst. The Bronze Medalists dealt almost exclusively with
computerized mayhem, which is kind of a cop-out. But you're all
special in your own ways.
The most basic prank came to us from just about everyone. It's
good and important, don't get me wrong, but it's been played.
Essentially, you take a screenshot of someone's desktop and make that
the wallpaper. Hee hee.
Brendan Colby writes:
We took a co-worker's monitor power cable and ran it
through the wall into a separate power strip/surge protector so we
could turn his monitor on/off at our leisure.
Rubin sent us an entire list of possible pranks including, but not
limited to:
Taping up the microphone of someone's phone, causing
them to speak louder.
Put a piece of clear tape on the glass of the photocopier. This is
fun, but it has a second part to it. If the sheer frustration of
someone having to make 100 copies all over again isn't enough, you
could try making 100 copies of the piece of tape, and then load the
paper into the paper feed. Funny to see people go crazy trying to
figure out why the copy is coming up with this square on every
page.
Post a For Sale on the lunchroom posterboard with your co-workers
extension, offering to sell "One size adult XL outfit of baby
clothing, including pacifier, bottle, bib and diaper."
James suggested using BoinkMail which allows you to send embarrassing things to your coworkers. Or
just send embarrassing things to your co-workers.
And the winner of the Bronze Medal is the big, pink office created
by Dan. The performance and planning were quite ambitious, though the
ultimate delivery could have been improved by a hit of Hello Kitty.
Stay tuned for the Silver and Gold medalists later today.

Some of the mid-level attacks
include:
GADC's demonic Mac Scripting: "Make a Shutdown script and save
it as an applet with a name that in no way implies its true nature.
Then set it up to run on startup or on login. Now whenever the victim
starts up or logs into the computer, it'll shut down. This one is
killer for obvious reasons."
Tim's Birthday Chair:
Disassemble a musical birthday card and carefully tape it
underneath a coworkers chair so that when the chair is leaned back,
the card activates. It took more than four hours for one coworker to
discover the source of the intermittent noise!
And Brendan's Word hack:
Subtle in execution, but so hot when it yields results.
Change the AutoCorrect on a coworker's Word settings such that when he
types in, say "facilitate," it gets auto-corrected to "faliatiate".
Don't have the patience to wait for him to type facilitate? Change
"the" to "teet", and so on.
And the Silver Medal goes to Anthony and his ’84 Westfalia
van cubicle mod. The van cost $400, but the joy it gives is
priceless.

Google
introduces Adsense banner ads.
Google has recently introduced banner ads for their
adsense program, so perhaps all the talk about how text ads perform
better is not true.
You could argue that banner ads are a different thing, that they
are richer media and thus brand advertising. But the difference is
that Google's image ads do not pay publishers on an impressions basis,
but for clicks, just like current contextual text ads.
Adwords works. People click on text ads which are relevant to a
search because they are actively looking for something. But perhaps
when ads are served alongside static content, the conversion rate is
lower, and perhaps people are starting to ignore them now that the
novelty has worn off. So maybe in your face image ads are back, for
good reason.
The problem for Google is that image ads are not only 'in your
face', they are very much in the face of a website. With the renewed
confidence that content publishers now have, my guess is that CPM
impressions based advertising will be back. If publishers have
leverage they will want the guaranteed revenue that being paid for
traffic gives them.
Google got rid of all CPM advertising making a big bet on the best
of both worlds CPC model that sits in between an advertiser and
publishers needs. If CPM is back is that bad news for Google?

We here at MacMerc.com have a love/hate relationship with banner
advertisements. On the one hand they are annoying--especially those
"Click the monkey and win a prize" ones. But on the other hand, they
help us pay our hosting fees.
Quite a while ago, as a public service to our readers, we posted an
article on ad blocking and now that sufficient time has passed and
our Google AdSense revenues are dwindling, we thought it might be the
appropriate time to see if some method of ad blocking as become a
standard part of your internet experience.
