On ballots, bl0gs and the
syndication-impaired...
02/10/2004 02:47 AM

Just a reminder - first things first today is the last day that you can vote for this year's Bloggies. And secondly, I want to put in a bit of a plug for daily dose of imagery in the Best Photography category, because (despite the fact that the site suffers from one of those appallingly truncated taster-only RSS feeds* that drive me absolutely barking) the images are simply and regularly beautiful. Particularly recommended is today's snowy car-lot in Toronto. Extraordinary.

* Other plasticbag.org regulars / favourites that don't get read as much as they should because of this fetish for miserable little RSS-dribblings: Zeldman, Oskarn.org, Worlds of Waldman, Wish Jar Journal and Paranoid Fish. I know that you all have your reasons, but really...! Lots more people would hear what you had to say if you'd just be amenable to how we'd like to read your sites...

InfoEyes: an Online Information Community and Virtual Reference Services for the Visually Impaired

"Under the leadership of the Illinois State Library Talking Book and Braille Service, the Mid-Illinois Talking Book Center and the Southern Illinois Talking Book Center are pleased to announce the opening of InfoEyes(http://www.infoeyes.org) on November 3, an online information community and virtual reference service for the visually impaired.

Talking book readers, other visually impaired individuals, and librarians are invited to use the trial service. Through the service, library customers can get assistance using the Internet, finding information on the Internet and in periodical databases and reader advisory service. Librarians will be using OCLC Question Point Enhanced software to provide services which include voice over IP, co-browsing, and application sharing. The trial will run through July 30, 2004. It is hoped that more libraries in other states serving the visually impaired will join Illinois in providing these services. Customers will be asked to evaluate the service and resources to help librarians in developing the service. Hours of service are posted on the web page and it is hoped that as more libraries join the service that hours can be extended. If customers want service outside of those hours, they can schedule an appointment or a reference session.

As the project develops, more information will be posted on the website. Tom Peters of TAP Information Services is the project evaluator and will write an evaluation of the project which will be made available when the project ends. If you have questions on the service, please contact Lori Bell (lbell@alliancelibrarysys tem.com) of the Mid-Illinois Talking Book Center or Diana Brawley Sussman (dbrawley@shawls.lib.il.us< /A>) of the Southern Illinois Talking Book Center." HOWTO defeat Pentagon censorware and
cast absentee ballots
09/21/2004 02:31 PM
Cory Doctorow: The Pentagon is blocking websites that help overseas military personnel cast absentee ballots in the upcoming Federal election. The Verified Voter Foundation has initiated a program to create a distributed mirror of absentee voting info and to provide anonymizing proxy services to defeat the military's unconstitutional censorware.
The International Herald Tribune reported on September 20th that "the Pentagon has begun restricting international access to the official Web site intended to help overseas absentee voters cast ballots." Pentagon spokeswoman Lieutenant Colonel Ellen Krenke confirmed that a number of Internet service providers worldwide had been blacklisted "to thwart hackers." Such measures are generally recognized to be ineffective against hackers while blocking legitimate users.

Apparently, the Federal Voting Assistance Program (FVAP) website is now blocked to civilians overseas trying to find out how to obtain absentee ballots in at least 25 countries--including Japan, France, Great Britain, and Spain--although military personnel overseas have other mechanisms for requesting absentee ballots.

More on syndication

More on syndication 08/05/2004 11:16 PM

Previousl y someone asked about the word syndication and what it means in the blog world. Prompted by a question I received, here are some more thoughts on the use of “Syndicate this Site” and what it means to have and use an RSS feed.

Typically “syndicate this site” means that the site owner has an XML feed (RSS and ATOM are the popular formats) that you can use to read their content. While syndication in the offline world refers to the fact that you can purchase certain content (comics, old TV reruns) for use in your publication, bloggers don’t often think of it that way.

For a variety of reasons, the word syndicate is misused by bloggers. What a blogger means is that they offer a feed that can be used to read their site in a news reader or on a site like My Yahoo or Blo glines that aggregates feeds. They don’t typically mean that you can use their feed on your commercial site.

That said, if you contact some of these blogs, you may be able to get permission from them to use their material on your site with attribution. Some bloggers are open to this and some aren’t. The answer you get will depend greatly on what you intend to do with the feed, who the blogger is, and how nicely you ask.

In Enthusiasts Call Web Feed Next Big Thing, Frank Bajak (an AP Technology Editor) does a good job of briefly explaining what RSS, who's using it, and why it's important. The technology behind them is called RSS and I rely on it daily to consult The New York Times, the BBC, CNET News, Slashdot and a few dozen other Web sites that employ RSS to make the very latest news stories or bits of commentary available for the plucking. From the chapter introduction:

In this chapter, we'll look at how RSS feeds are structured: both the feed itself and the way RSS fits into the whole web publishing picture.
