Bobby Fuller< /a> was a Texas based rock and roll singer best known for the immortal rebel anthem "I Fought The Law,". Considered by many to be the heir to Buddy Holly as the king of Texas Rock, he built on Holly's style with songs like the aforementioned "...Law," "Jenny Lee," "Love's Made A Fool Of You," and the 2 1/2 minute masterpiece "Let Her Dance." And then it ended, at age 22, in very weird circumstances. Over the years, interest in Fuller and his work has ebbed and flowed, and plenty of archival material surfaced, but the mystery of his death remains unsolved, although many have speculated. Revolution for martial artists
06/24/2005 06:25 PM
Cory Doctorow: Kickass Kung Fu is a video-game in which you use real martial-arts moves to control an on-screen kung-fu fighter in order to best both human and AI opponents.
The game takes place on a 5 meter cushioned playfield suitable for martial arts and acrobatics training. Using custom computer vision technology, you are taken inside an artificial reality where the normal laws of physics no longer apply. Your movements are exaggerated so that you can easily dodge your opponent's bullets by jumping five meters in the air and landing behind his back. Using the dual projected screens, one at each end of the playfield, you can also continue by counter-attacking your stupefied enemy from the behind.

Cory Doctorow: American health insurers are working with obesity researchers to encourage children to play Dance Dance Revolution on home consoles with dance-mats as a way of reversing childhood obesity and the concomitant health costs later in life.
Jones is one of 85 children in an at-home study trying the popular Dance Dance Revolution video game to boost their activity. The study is being done by West Virginia's public employees insurance group in hopes it will lead to better health and lower costs.

Jones lost about 10 pounds by changing his diet. Now, after two weeks playing the game, he has lost another 10.

There have been discussions over the past few years about the problem of childhood obesity and how video games that force kids to be active may be at least part of the solution. While going outside and doing something is probably better, if they must be staring at a screen, they might as well be active about it. It appears that one insurance company has decided to test this out and is running a study by giving Dance, Dance Revolution to kids in an effort to make them lose some weight. While others have noted the aerobic nature of the game (and the game apparently has a calorie burning counter as an option), this appears to be the first insurance company promoting the game. Next thing you know, your car insurance rates will rise if you play Grand Theft Auto...

This CNN piece follows the tales of formerly supersized boy and girl geeks who shed *lots* of unwanted weight playing the wacky Japanese electronic game "Dance Dance Revolution." In DDR, players stomp around on a grid of brightly lit squares while hyperfast techno music blares at them from a video display unit. There's also a home version, which sells for under US$50.
As she cooled herself in front of a fan at a video arcade, two teenage boys danced on a machine nearby. Their sneakers pounded out a staccato rhythm at a pace so fast that "Lord of the Dance"'s Michael Flatley would be envious.

Not everyone sees dramatic results. Seventeen-year-old Justin Meeks says his body is more toned, but his weight hasn't changed. He's pleased to point out, though, that his dancing skills have helped him get girls. "Two. I'm guilty of that," Justin said with a grin as he watched friends play DDR.

Yoz has posted a great account of his encounter with a touring clade of pan-European Dance Dance Revolution obsessives:
"We're a group of DDR players in Norway." Do they play other bemani games? "No, just DDR." He points to the guy he was playing with, now off the machine and chatting to his girlfriend. "He's from Sweden, he has a DDR group there too." The machine is now in the control of the third chap, a large-ish bloke with shoulder-length hair. "He has a group in France, but they play all kinds of music games." Do you guys play competitively? "Sometimes... like tomorrow. It's why we're all here - there's a big contest at the Namco arcade in Westminster. There'll be players from four different countries. It's pretty big."

Dance, familiar. Dance... 12/11/2003 02:34 PM

An interesting line about the selves manufactured by spies (that seems to me to have currency for all people who have cause to narrativise their lives in one way or another) from John Le Carré's rather blandly-titled (but also rather good) new novel Absolute Friends:

But who is Mundy Three, when Mundys One and Two have gone to bed? Who is this third person who is neither one of the other two, who lies awake while they sleep, and listens for the chimes of country bells he doesn't hear? He is the silent spectator. he is the one member of the audience who doesn't applaud the performances of his two familiars. He is made up of all the odd bits of his life that are left over after he has given the rest away.

The Google Dance

The Google Dance 06/12/2002 06:22 AM
What is the Google Dance? LinkTree says: Once in a month Google calculates the pagerank of each page and changes the serp (search enigne result pages) for all keywords. The Google Dance is called the time between the start and the end of an update. In that time you get different results on www.google.com, www2.google.com and www3.google.com. Normally the Google Dance took about 4 days. The best time to put new pages online is during the Google-Dance. If you let too much time lapse between the completion of the update, and the publication of new content, you may reduce the amount of new content that will be included in the next update. Woz at WebmasterWorld offers this alternate explanation: They put some pages in, They take some pages out, They calculate the PageRank, Then they shake it all about, They wait until the full moon Then they mix the servers up, Thats what its all about. If you're really interested, WebmasterWorld keeps a chart of Google Update History.

As Slow As Possible

As Slow As Possible 07/06/2004 11:58 AM
orgelfrontalThe sound of an E and E-sharp rang out of an abandoned German church yesterday. They were the latest organ notes in a musical piece that will take another 636 years to finish playing. Avant-garde composer John Cage (1912-1992) composed Organ2/ASLSP in 1985. The title comes from the tempo Cage had in mind when the work would be played: "as slow as possible." This performance at St. Burchardi Church in Halberstadt began September 5, 2001, but until last February the only sound was the building's natural ambience. Since then, a total of five notes have been played. National Public Radio has a page about ASLSP, including audio samples and an "All Things Considered" radio piece from last fall:
In a 1982 interview with NPR, John Cage revealed that he wanted to make his "music so that it doesn't force the performers of it into a particular groove, but which gives them some space in which they can breathe and do their own work with a degree of originality. I like to make suggestions, and then see what happens, rather than setting down laws and forcing people to follow them."

RAP is too slow?

RAP is too slow? 05/01/2004 11:51 AM
RAP is good!.

I got impatient and couldn't resist trying RAP (RDF API for PHP) with the pet data. I don't know PHP and am no expert on server admin, but it only took a couple of hours to get an installation running and a script together to load the Pet Profiles into a triplestore (ModelDB). Here are the pet statements, transferred live from the (in DB) instance docs.

Very pleasing indeed. [Raw]

Wow! What a coincidence. We were just talking about RAP and how slow it was the other day on our PeepAgg IRC channel.

Apparently when you want to parse 444 people sized FOAF files (which would be my Tribe FOAF) it'll take forever. So the question is: "can we optimzie RAP or rewrite it in C - and somehow get that code into a php codebase (like Drupal?)

Slow News Day 01/17/2003 12:28 PM
For about a year now there has been a feeling of dark inevitability growing in my consciousness. I've tried to ignore it, but it rears its ugly head nearly everyday at the same time. I am of course talking about the rumors of The Simpsons getting closer and closer to being cancelled. Today, all of this stress has been relieved, at least for a couple more years. The Simpsons has been renewed until at least 2005. And you thought I was going to talk about war, right? There seems to be a dearth of web standards (or related topics) news as of late. Other than the quasi-anti-standards-movement (whatever that means) that was the talk of blogspace for a few days. I like Mark's new HTML 4 design more than his previous XHTML one. I'm off for class, enjoy your Friday.

Can You Slow Spammers Down?

Can You Slow Spammers Down? 02/16/2004 10:53 PM
Yet another anti-spam company is making news for their slightly different take on how to stop spam. The company, TurnTide, is offering a router for ISPs that watches over email traffic, and if the traffic is consistent with that of spam, the system slows down the traffic to a crawl, making spamming less lucrative, in theory. This is, basically, a more commercial means of offering a greylisting solution. The company, which showed up with a new $1 million in funding today at DEMO 2004, claims they have no competitors - but that (as always) is untrue (and whoever invested in them needs to tell them that). My guess, though, is that it won't take spammers too long to figure out ways to get around this sort of blocking maneuver. At their own end, they'll simply find spam-sympathetic ISPs (as they do now) that would never use such a system. Then, they'll probably just hijack more machines and have them each send out limited amounts of email to trick the system into believing they're legitimate.

Hydrogen Fuel Cell Motorbike Unveiled (BBC link, no reg. req.)
The Emissions Neutral Vehicle (ENV), has a top speed of 50mph (80km/h), a range of at least 100 miles (160km) and can run continuously for four hours before the fuel cell needs recharging.
What's more, the bike's "exhaust" is water vapor and is so clean that its drinkable.
Concerns are that the bike is too quiet and plans have been made to add a motor sound to the bike so as to not startle pedestrians. Though I must admit to kind of liking the idea of "stealth mode" motorcycling.
