05/12/2004 04:08 PMOvolab has released an update for Phlink, bringing it to version 1.4.
Phlink is a telephony utility designed for creating a telephone
information center. The update features support for multiple phone
lines and incoming fax detection. When a phone line is ringing, a
translucent window pops up on the desktop, showing the phone number of
the caller and the name, if available. Phlink users can add dynamic
information to this window through AppleScript. For instance, a script
can automatically look up the caller's phone number on the Internet
and display the name and address of the caller in this pop-up window.

Do Not Touch That Mouse
Do Not Touch That Mouse
12/30/2004 04:39 PMWe've all seen examples of how various companies are attaching more
and more ridiculous "warnings" to products thanks to ever-present
product liability suits because someone didn't realize things like
that they shouldn't submerge their toaster in the bathtub they were in
at the time. While many of these are simply funny examples of "who
would ever actually
do that?" some new laws are creating some
absolutely bizarre warning labels. Take, for example, warning labels
that are showing up on certain computer mice in the state of
California. Thanks to regulations, some mice have warnings saying you
should
wash your
hands after handling them. The warning is specifically referring
to the cord, and the fact that it has a tiny bit of lead in it, but as
the article points out, unless the cord is broken up, you'd probably
have to
eat a fair amount of your mouse cord before you'd have
a problem from lead poisoning. Still, apparently, some users are
returning the mice, fearing for their safety.

Getting in touch with your inner jackass
Getting in touch with your inner jackass
12/19/2004 03:30 PM
Before I had kids, I never got really angry. I did't yell and I didn't
get into knock down, drag out arguments with anybody. But, as every
parent knows, kids can make you crazy and kids can make you angry.
I've got good control over my temper and I think I'm a pretty mild
mannered guy, but with three young sons, I've got plenty of
opportunities to yell, and to say things I never thought I would ever,
ever say. I get angry now (and, of course, that is not entirely bad).
I've got a theory about why kids can make parents so angry. They don't
realize it, but kids emulate their parent's verbal and physical
mannerisms all the time. As you watch your child you can see bits and
pieces of your own personality. They pick up on the little phrases
that you repeat. They repeat them too. When your kid starts to fuss or
throw a tantrum or otherwise behave like a jackass, he does it in a
way that reminds you of yourself, your mannerisms, and your
personality. You see your own inner jackass reflected in the actions
of your child. Your kid learned how to be a jackass directly from you,
it shows, and boy oh boy does that piss you off.
I've only raised kids up to the age of seven, so I don't know the full
range of anger that a child can induce yet, but I think I'm onto
something here.
