My cable modem died last night before I was finished (it still is down -- I'm now dialing in via MSN). But, Forgetfoo went off and designed me a whole new look! See why CSS is cool? He can come up with a new design very easily. Anyway, I will keep working on the design this weekend. Who knows? I might just use Forgetfoo's design.

I just got my Yahoo! DSL self-install kit in the mail, and the modem has a red sticker on it that reads:
"ATTENTION To maximize connection speed, leave this modem on for 10 days after DSL installation is complete. Please Note: You can use your DSL service during this time. It is not necessary to leave your computer on, only the modem."
Why do I have to leave the modem on for 10 days? Is something inside it fermenting? Email me if you know.

Qwest Offers Wi-Fi in DSL Modem

Qwest Offers Wi-Fi in DSL Modem 04/09/2004 03:57 PM
Qwest is selling DSL customers a $60 (or rented for $3/month) gateway with Wi-Fi built-in: Actiontec is a big winner here, with Qwest selling their DSL/Wi-Fi combo. This may be the first U.S. telecom or cable firm to offer Wi-Fi so aggressively as an integrated product, but it won't be the last. It will soon be de rigeur to offer Wi-Fi as an option or a baseline feature in gateways and broadband modems. The products are available; the ISPs just need to hop on the right bandwagon. The price is notable, because past offerings of Wi-Fi equipment to telco customers has been far above market prices. This price tag of $60 seems perfectly reasonable given its integration. It's not clear from the article whether technical support for Wi-Fi is included in the DSL subscription....

Kensington Cable Locks Easily Defeated
Says Security.org
08/09/2004 07:27 AM

KENSINGTON_2.jpg imageBearing in mind that Security.org usually wants to sell you a fix to the problems they talk about, they are warning users of some models of Kensington cable locks for notebook computers that the product can be easily defeated with a dollar's worth of common office supplies (the exact method isn't given). While that's sort of disappointing - and something Kensington should address, certainly - if you were leaving your laptop unattended in places where someone has even 30 seconds of time to try to fiddle with your locks, you're sort of asking for it anyway.

As many of the posters in the referring Slashdot thread say, notebook lock are like The Club. It's not that it secures your car; it's that it secures you car a little more than the next guy's.

How to unlock your phone

How to unlock your phone 05/24/2004 09:01 AM
On Popular Science, an article on getting your mobile phone unlocked. Here in London, there're shops that advertise phone unlocking on practically every block, but it's almost unheard-of in the USA:
While number portability may have freed your cell digits, your phone is still a ball and chain, locked into one carrier's service. These subsidy locks keep you from walking away before the provider can recover that big discount you got when you bought the phone.

But it doesn't have to be so. If you have a GSM phone, you can unlock it and switch to any GSM network carrier (the big three are AT&T, Cingular and T-Mobile). You can also take an unlocked phone overseas (most of the world uses GSM) and use it on a local network to avoid paying for international roaming, or even buy a European phone (they tend to be ahead of us in cell tech) and use it here. Have an old phone lying around? Unlock it and keep it as a spare.

I was recently overseas and had my GSM T-Mobile phone with me. I figured I would run out get a pre-paid sim card and have local cell service while in the country I was in. To my surprise I could not get the SIM card to work in the phone. I was a bit pissed. But to my surprise a friend of mine sent me a link to this article and now I have the unlock code to my cell phone and when I am overseas again I will get a local pre-paid SIM card and be in business.
