Amtrak Planning More Wi-Fi
01/27/2004 12:36 PMAmtrak is planning to deploy hotspots in six more stations in the
northeast: The setup may be different in those stations than in New
York's Union Station where the network is only available in the first
class passenger lounge. Amtrak has high hopes for the new networks,
expecting to see around 1 million users a day. Amtrak hasn't announced
whether the hotspots will be free to use or come with a fee....
Review: First Class Amtrak
Review: First Class Amtrak
12/06/2003 09:47 AM It was a good thing I took the train from NYC to Boston last night
not only because trains are one of the few modes of transportation
that are actually enjoyable, but also because the snow storm felled
the airports. But ... Pitney-Bowes sprang for the extra $50 for first
class, so I tried it. Conclusion: Save your money. I couldn't see any
physical difference in the first class car except that it was
conspicuously filthy. Yes, they give you a mediocre meal. Yes, you get
free liquor, but you'd have to drink a lot more than I do...

02/11/2004 11:07 PMTurns out after all the various speculation on reasons, the big

was the result of a

The bug meant that an alarm that should have been triggered never went
off - leading to a series of problems that went unnoticed until it was
too late.

Numbers Stations
Numbers Stations
06/22/2004 04:01 PMNumbers station
: A post over at Boing Boing reminded me of
the phenomenon of numbers stations.
Numbers stations are shortwave radio stations of uncertain origin
that broadcast streams of numbers, words, or phonetic sounds. No one
knows for sure where their signals originate or what purpose they
serve. The voices that can be heard on these stations are often those
of children, or are mechanically generated.
Numbers stations appear and disappear continuously, although some
stick to regular schedules. It has been speculated that these stations
operate as a simple and foolproof method for government agencies to
communicate with spies "in the field", using the transmitted codes as
a one-time pad cryptosystem.
The geek factor is off the charts, here. I first learned about
these wonders of mystery in a great book called "Big Secrets" by Willian Poundstone. If things
like this intrigue you, that book is totally worth reading.
As for the stations themselves, I'm pretty sure they're a
distributed, stegano
graphic cr
ypto key based on the
Voynich manusript by some spies hiding out in SubTropli
s (with a sects in Aquapoli
s and the Iron
Mountain complex, of course) perfecting their anti-rocket laser cannons and spy
satellites. They get around in their personal submarines, defending their bases with Metal
Storm cannons from enemy spies attacking in Surface Orbiters.

months, evangelical broadcasters have dedicated program after program
to bemoaning 'judicial tyranny,' and urging audiences to agitate for
the 'nuclear option' — changing Senate rules so Democrats can no
longer filibuster and thereby block nominees they oppose....All the
while, the dizzying blend of God, news, and politics that he [Pat

through thousands of cable systems, rippling over the airwaves, and

Turning off your SSID is dumb
Turning off your SSID is dumb
12/10/2003 11:21 PMGood, short white-paper explains why turning off your WiFi access
point's SSID broadcast is not only bad for security, it's also bad for
performance.
Contrary to a common belief that the SSID is a WLAN security feature
and its exposure a security risk, the SSID is nothing more than a
wireless-space group label. It cannot be successfully hidden.
Attempts to hide it will not only fail, but will negatively impact
WLAN performance, and may result in additional exposure of the SSID
to passive scanning. The performance impact of this misguided effort
will be felt in multiple WLAN scenarios, including simple operations
like joining a WLAN, and in significantly longer roaming times.
