PIXMA, with the first four models --
iP1500,
iP2000,
iP3000 and

four offer 2 picoliter ink droplets, Full-Photolithography Inkjet
Nozzle Engineering (FINE), which Canon says allows the printers to
achieve high-speed printing over wide areas in one pass, and a new
version of the company's Easy-PhotoPrint storing and printing software
that includes the added tools Face Sharpening, Face Brightener, Red
Eye Correction and Blemish Remover, as well as support for the auto
duplexing functionality found in the top two PIXMA printers. They all
require Mac OS X v10.2.1 or higher.
Canon i9900
Canon i9900
12/22/2004 01:39 AMWe’ve spent quite a few bucks this last couple of years with one
photo-finisher or another, and recently Lauren’s been cooking up
business ideas around photography. So she went out and got a
Canon i9900 and
I got my hands on it first; wow! It’ll probably end up plugged into
one of the fixed machines but we didn’t have the right cable, so I
FireWired it into my Mac (grr, had to reboot to install the driver)
and ran
one
or
two of my
favorite prints at 300dpi and well, my goodness gracious, they look
just like what comes back from the online print service, only better.
I’m sure that a fine professional photo-finisher who puts their soul
into their work can do better, but that’s not what I’m getting
when I upload my JPEGs to one mass-market printshop or another. And
there’s lots of playing-around to do with DPI and paper finishes and
colour spaces and so on. I assume that, things being what they are,
the competition is about as good too, which is very good indeed.

Review: Canon Ink-Jet Photo Printers
02/05/2005 09:19 PMCanon has released a pair of color ink-jet photo printers that are
similar in technology but target somewhat different markets. The Pixma
iP8500 delivers fine-quality prints no larger than letter size. The
i9900 also prints well, and it can produce prints as large as 13 by 19
inches. Spending time with these two printers revealed more
similarities than differences in color quality, but variations in the
way they operate will determine which model better suits your needs.

Self-replicating 3D printers
Self-replicating 3D printers
03/19/2005 03:02 AMCory Doctorow:
A researcher in Bath, England is working on a 3D printer that can be
used to print out all the parts necessary to make 3D printers.
Bowyer has already produced an electronic circuit by squirting the
alloy inside a plastic autonomous robot, which itself was created
using a commercial 3D printer. Because the heated syringe he used is
very similar to the nozzle that deposits plastic layers in the
printer, he envisions squirting both plastic and metal from the same
nozzle in future self-replicating machines.
The machine need not be capable of assembling itself, he says, only
producing all the necessary parts, with the exception of the
microprocessors and the lubricating grease. These could later be added
and the various parts clipped together, Bowyer says. "People are quite
capable of assembling things if they want to," he adds. "I am not
interested in self-assembly, just self-copying."

Six multifunction printers for Linux
12/05/2003 05:32 AMHave you been looking for an "All-in-one" (aka known as MFP,
multi-function printer) for your Linux desktop? So have we, with
somewhat mixed results. We found no MFPs in our price range (under
$500.00) which are shipped with drivers for Linux. But we did find a
number of MFPs which are usable on Linux machines, thanks to free
software drivers available either with your Linux distribution or on
the Internet. Be warned, however, that not every feature or function
of many of the printers we found work with the free drivers. Here's
the story on what we found, along with six specific MFPs that work
with free software drivers and Linux to consider during your holiday
shopping.

adds PictBridge comparability (for easy one-button transfer direct
from camera to printer or portable hard drive). The A85 also ships
with a 32MB Compact Flash card, which is a nice step up from the usual
16MB card most cameras are bundled with. It's about time we start
