KTML Lite 3.1.6 - Demonstrating the
power of online HTML visual editing
02/10/2004 02:42 AM

Submission by Monica Costin This is the first demo release of the KTML3, a professional web editor that will help you edit web pages directly from your browser. This highly reliable tool works both from Internet Explorer or Mozilla/Netscape browsers, on Windows or Mac computers and with PHP, ASP or ColdFusion application servers. It's simply the best HTML editor you can get! And even in this demo version it will bring a lot of value for your websites, as it includes: web content management from its intuitive interface, using clipboard operations, font and size drop-downs, the bold, italic and underline options; perform easy paragraph positioning and aligning, bulleted and numbered lists; use intuitive color pickers, that support both direct selection and hexadecimal code use, for more rigorous design requirements; embed into existing tables pictures or other tables; upload images to the server through a user-friendly interface. New folders can be created to organize images by category; upload files with an upload transaction which is completely safe, thus preventing the upload of potentially dangerous files. Moreover, any programmer that uses KTML3 for websites created in Dreamweaver MX (for the PHP_MySQL, PHAkt2, ASP VB Script and Cold Fusion server models) will be able to use the powerful Server Behavior to visually customize the editor properties. Download now KTML Lite After you download KTML Lite, you can see our better alternative as the KTML3 full version here: http://www.interakt.ro/products/KTML/

The new WebCore also supports HTML editing. You can specify editable regions in a page using the contenteditable attribute (which maps to a CSS property behind the scenes, so you can even set that property in your user stylesheets if you want to get crazy). We've also added a selection object so that you can get the current selection, and of course support for execCommand so that you can perform operations on the selection. And yes, so that you can actually tell what you're doing stylistically, getComputedStyle is now also supported.

The BBC is reporting on Downhill Battle's move to offer the new Microsoft Windows XP update via BitTorrent as a way of showing how distributed file sharing applications can be used for legitimate, non-infringing purposes (though, the article hints that Microsoft isn't particularly thrilled about this). Of course, anyone who understands how BitTorrent works knows that there are already plenty of examples of non-infringing uses of BitTorrent. At this point, unfortunately, this demo may only serve to show how immature BitTorrent actually is. While the concept is great, the implementation still needs quite a bit of work.

SpyView: Photoshop Classic Effects: The
Essential Effects Every User Needs to
Know
12/22/2004 01:26 AM
Author Scott Kelby has written an easy-to-read book that any serious Adobe Photoshop user is sure to want on their desk for easy access to the more than 100 “classic” Photoshop projects. Step-by-step, Kelby walks the reader through techniques that result in the stunning, professional effects that you see everyday in magazines, on billboards, in newspapers and on the Internet. Examples of the projects include using one photo as the background and focal point; creating chrome bevelled type; tinting black and white photos and creating reflections and various shadowing techniques. Kelby states simply that “these are the effects your clients expect you to know if you are a professional Photoshop user”. Kelby, editor of Photoshop User magazine and author of several bestselling Photoshop books, has cut the learning time dramatically for newer users of the program. Photoshop Classic Effects doesn’t require you to work through one tutorial after another, but enables you to easily find the project you’re interested in using, which is why you’ll want to keep it handy for future reference. Kelby has used language throughout the book that is easy to understand and provides the user commands for both Mac and Windows platforms. The book is beautifully illustrated with full color photographs by Brand X Pictures. If you want to follow along using the same photos Kelby used in his projects, the low-res images are available for download at http://www.scottkelbybooks.com/classicphotos. If you’re interested in this book, but still undecided whether to make the purchase, you might want to try a few of Kelby’s samples for yourself. Publisher Peach Pit Press has included some of the author’s step-by-step projects on a tip sheet which is available for download from http://www.peachpit.com/title/0321272250#. Published by Peachpit Press ISBN: 0321272250; Published: Jun 18, 2004; Copyright 2004; Dimensions 8 X 10 ; Pages: 384; Edition: 1st. Hyperlink hyperbole

Hyperlink hyperbole 12/24/2004 12:50 PM
Jeremy Zawodny is scratching his head over an odd thread in the Slate/Washington Post coverage:

I'm catching up on e-mail as my flight is delayed in O'Hare and came across the following tidbit about Slate Magazine in the latest Edupage mailing:

"Although the magazine only recently achieved break-even status on revenue of about $6 million per year, Slate won a National Magazine Award for its editorial content, and mainstream news organizations frequently cite it. The publication is also given credit for shaping Web publishing and introducing the use of hyperlinks and Web logs."

(Emphasis mine.)

Am I reading that right? Edupage wants me to believe that Slate is responsible for introducing hyperlinks to the world?

I'm having a very, very hard time believing that.

Am I alone?

No, Jeremy, you're not alone. The source of this odd statement is almost certainly David Carr's New York Times piece, which included the following passage: "Although Slate has never achieved steady profitability, it is credited with helping to shape Web publishing as well as pioneering the use of hyperlinks and Web logs."

Carr's "pioneering" was marginally closer to reality than Edupage's feeble substitution of "introducing." But neither is particularly correct.

I sincerely doubt anyone at Slate would have claimed to have introduced either hyperlinks or blogs to the world. Slate was in fact rather shy of linking for the longest time -- in the early days, the links in each article were typically segregated in a little afterword section. As for blogs, Slate gave Mickey Kaus's blog a home at a time when, quite possibly, only three people in the Washington Post newsroom knew what a blog was; but at the same time, blogs were already a widespread format, and widely known to the web-aware world.

Slate deserves tons of credit for many things; after a lot of false starts in the first few years, it became quite adept at devising creative Web-native formats for writers (like the e-mail exchanges). But "pioneering the use of hyperlinks and Web logs" is just not an accurate statement.

I imagine Carr meant to write something more like "The publication is also given credit for raising the profile of hyperlinks and blogs in the media and government circles that constitute some of its core readership." Or if he didn't, he should have.

Hyperlink Usability

Hyperlink Usability 05/22/2004 12:50 AM

Design Guidelines for Visualizing Links: A lot of really good guidelines for hyperlink usability that really boil down to one point: do links the way HTML was built to handle them and you won't have any problems. Ninety-nine percent of usability problems on the Net are a result of people trying to get cute.

Don't underline any text that's not a link, even if your links aren't underlined. Reserve underlining for links. Because underlines provide a strong perceived affordance of clickability, users will be confused and disappointed if underlined text doesn't have an actual affordance to match this perception.

Silly Patent Of The Day: Adobe Hit With

Silly Patent Of The Day: Adobe Hit With
Lawsuit Over Hyperlink Patent
07/08/2004 05:05 PM
I think it's about time we came up with a new topic/icon for stupid patents. There are just so many of them these days. The latest is that Adobe, who is no stranger to abusing intellectual property rules, is now being hit with a patent over their PDF technology. The patent is for a method of extracting network information via hyperlinks. Reading through the patent, they're basically describing a system for clicking on a hyperlinking and having the system not only download the page in question, but all locally related pages linked from that page as well. Perhaps a useful system, but it seems like this sort of technology was around well before the patent was granted, and it's unclear what it has to do with PDF files.

Y2K Effects

Y2K Effects 01/04/2005 01:07 PM

The Surprising Legacy of Y2K: It turns out there were some very surprising secondary effects of the Y2K panic. I will admit to having never considered any of these — in my mind, Y2K was a huge hole into which companies poured money to no benefit other than the acute problem avoidance.

[...] it was probably responsible for the rise of the Indian offshore IT boom. It also resulted in big productivity gains as decades of cruft were removed from datacenters during the fixes. For example, when the NY Stock Exchange was able to reassmble its systems six days after 9/11, it was because of the Y2K-related work they'd done.

This is a link to a link, but the OSNews blurb summarizes the more in-depth piece nicely.

Grid-Accelerated After Effects

Grid-Accelerated After Effects 02/10/2004 02:49 AM

Adobe is teaming up with GridIron Software to produce a (relatively) low-cost grid accelerated version of After Effects.

Adding GridIron's XLR8 technology to After Effects — which produces motion graphics and other effects for film and the web — will allow users to use processor time on other computers on the network to shorten rendering & preview times. According to GridIron, the benefits of adding grid technology will be dramatic:

The bundled grid technology is expected to provide linear performance improvement, so preview and rendering will be completed nearly twice as fast on two computers than on one, three times as fast on three computers, and so on. Setting up a grid to achieve this increased speed is accomplished by installing the GridIron XLR8 and After Effects software components and connecting the computers together via a network.

This is the first time that grid technology has been put in reach of small to medium businesses, and it supposedly takes few special skills to set up and operate. And the possibilities that this opens up for applying the technology to other Adobe applications... There is hope for us who spend too much waiting for rasterizing and rendering operations!

See the press release on GridIron's website.
