eWeek: Firebird Frenzy Erupts

eWeek: Firebird Frenzy Erupts

eWeek: Firebird Frenzy Erupts 02/10/2004 02:42 AM

"After comparing what are commonly thought of as the two most common and most popular open-source databases--MySQL and PostgreSQL--I was floored by the amount of mail I received regarding my ill-advised omission of the hotly popular Firebird open-source database..."

Coding Frenzy

Coding Frenzy 05/14/2004 09:02 AM
Warning: techtalk follows, you may freely skip this if your eyes glaze over at the word "XML".

I've been in a coding frenzy for the past couple of days. JSPWiki has had some considerable additions, here being the relevant part of the ChangeLog:

2004-05-14  Janne Jalkanen
<Janne.Jalkanen@nospam.ecyrd.com>

        * v2.1.97.

        * Added preliminary support for the Atom blog API. It still
does
        not yet completely work, however.

I'll be a non-productive member of the society for the next three-four days (another wedding? Don't people get tired of these things already?), so nothing much may happen. But yeah, I nearly got ecto working with JSPWiki.

There is still however a question on how the blog and wiki apis should interact. You see, the page Main on this site is both a weblog and a wiki page. I'm having trouble, you see:

  • GET to /atom/ lists all wiki pages (which means that even on this site, there are a lot of them) - not just the weblogs (since every page can be a weblog, even the weblog entry pages)
  • GET to /atom/Main... Should it list all of the blog entries, or should it GET the Wiki page content? Both are valid interpretations...

I'm confused... Which is the correct way to handle this? Should a WikiWebl og combination have separate URIs for Wiki and Weblog functionality? Isn't that kinda redundant?

Update Frenzy

Update Frenzy 03/06/2004 01:56 AM
After a relatively quiet week or two, save the opening of the SF Apple Store (complete with shiny glass stairs), Apple have sneaked out a few updates today. Airport has been updated to 3.3.1, fixing some wake-from-sleep issues and glitches when switching networks, iDVD has been updated to 4.0.1, adding improved reliability when burning DVD's and GarageBand Jam Pack has been updated to 1.0.1. There is also an update available for people using NVidia cards and Cinema Displays.

Man, there's a lot of media here right now. I've just spoken with folks from The Nation, and I've got a team from PBS looking over my shoulder - "Hey, can I get you blogging right now?" Just had a few of the journalists present yell into the blogger group, asking, "Hey, does anyone know Kerry's Secret Service codename?" Through the looking glass.

Microsoft employees aren't being true to their school. At least that's what a high-level Redmond executive told Wired on Wednesday. Google autolink debate frenzy

Google autolink debate frenzy 03/14/2005 05:45 PM
I'm too mired in book work to offer much besides pointers, but here are pointers galore on the important controversy over the Google toolbar Autolink feature -- in which Google offers to overlay its own links to certain types of information that it finds on everyone else's Web pages. In 2001 Microsoft proposed putting something similar right into its Internet Explorer browser, and Walt Mossberg and many others blew the whistle on it. Links should be considered part of the vocabulary of Web content; inserting links is tantamount to tampering with the content.

This time it's been Dave Winer who's been blowing the whistle insistently. Here's Dave's case against Autolink. The opposite point of view -- it's a tool, I should be able to use any tools I want once content lands on my screen! -- is smartly summarized by Cory Doctorow here and here. Paul Boutin in Slate, and Tim Bray, also offer good, careful perspectives.

Me, I think the issue is fundamentally political more than technical; Google is now powerful enough that it needs to learn to tread more lightly in areas like this. My hunch is the Google-ites, encapsulated in their "let's bring all the world's information to light!" mission, simply had no idea what an ethical morass they have plopped themselves into. If the past is any indication, they're nimble enough to step out.

eWeek: Sun to promote LAMP

eWeek: Sun to promote LAMP 08/16/2002 05:51 AM
Schwartz said that at the edge of the Web, Sun will promote a LAMP (Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP) solution to developers. LAMP, a generic open-source solution, is Sun's Linux-based solution available on its newly released LX50 Intel-based machines running Linux or Solaris. Schwartz referred to Sun's version as Sun LAMP. Apache is an open-source Web server, MySQL is an open-source database and PHP is an open-source language for creating middle-tier HTML applications.

"Our competition is Windows, but it will increasingly suffer from the economic model Linux will promote," Schwartz said.

While Sun will continue to drive large deployments to the Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE) infrastructure, the company will promote LAMP for less complex applications.

JSP 2.0 has three major changes, all of which make the language significantly easier to use for non-Java programmers... JSP 2.0 supports a new expression and variable manipulation syntax based on both ECMAScript and XPath. This expression language provides built-in support for nested data structures and collections of objects, automatic type conversion, and default values for uninitialized variables.
