Linux/sf convention call for papers

Linux/sf convention call for papers 07/31/2004 02:04 PM
Mark sez, "Linucon, a combination science fiction convention and Linux expo is looking for panelists and papers for their upcoming event."
We're looking for several different types of programming. On the Geek side we have "Heavy technical", which includes topics like programming, system administration, and security, and "Light technical", which is about using computers rather than programming them (Digital art, electronic publishing, online communities, Linux on the Desktop, Open source in business, video games, etc). On the Fandom side, our main themes this year include literary topics (for authors, editors, publishers, and readers), Anime (and Manga), gaming, costuming... There are also "crossover" topics (like online comics and computer animation) that appeal to both sides.

The Mono project will detail tools it has developed that will allow programmers to build Web-based applications based on Microsoft's .Net platform and execute those applications on computers that run versions of the Linux and Unix operating systems, according to Ximian.

"tri" How do you think this affects PHP? I personally believe that PHP needs stronger leadership and direction now, because if Microsoft allows Mono to flourish, I think Mono is going to change the way we program on all platforms. Java never moved me because I always felt that other languages were unsupported - Sun said that Java was open, but their minds were actually closed. In contrast, Mono (and .NET) is language neutral and the feature set is attractive.

Free/open source software (F/OSS) is software for which the human-readable source code is made available to the user of the software, who can then modify the code in order to fit the software to the user’s needs. The source code is the set of written instructions that define a program in its original form, and when it’s made fully accessible programmers can read it, modify it, and redistribute it, thereby improving and adapting the software. In this manner the software evolves at a rate unmatched by traditional proprietary software.

For many years free/open source software has been building momentum. Beginning amidst the technical cultures that produced the Internet and World Wide Web, it is now causing quite a stir in the commercial world as large software corporations are finding themselves competing against commercially available open source software.
information. This new demand for free and open source software has piqued interest among scholars in disciplines ranging from sociology to economics to social psychology, and has raised questions in fields of application ranging from innovation processes to strategic management. The online papers archives represents the latest thinking and current happenings.

Geoff sez, "Onward! is a computer science conference dedicated to far-out, paradigm-breaking thinking. The Call for Participation is out, and we're seeking submissions of papers describing new ideas or projects that represent innovative thinking. Last year, Larry Lessig keynoted."
OOPSLA 2004 welcomes papers describing new paradigms or metaphors in computing, new thinking about objects, new framings of computational problems or systems, and new technologies. Papers in the Onward! Track need not advance the state of the art, but should aim, instead, to alter or redefine the art by proposing a leap forward—or sideways—regarding computing. Papers in the following areas are welcome, as are any papers representing radical thinking of interest to theoreticians and practitioners at OOPSLA:

* programming language theory, practice, and design
* architectures
* software development and methodologies
* applications
* environments
* education
* ethics
* biological or other non-traditional models of computing
* paradigms, metaphors, philosophy, and problem framings
