Proxim Switch Supports Voice

Proxim Switch Supports Voice

Proxim Switch Supports Voice 02/10/2004 02:40 AM

Proxim plans to introduce today a wireless LAN switch and access point (AP) designed to support voice over WLANs as well as seamless handoffs between cellular and Wi-Fi networks:The switch and AP incorporate a number of functions that aim to make it easier for companies to deploy voice on their wireless networks. For example, Proxim tackles the fast roaming issue through pre-authentication. Today, handoff between standard 802.11 APs happens too slowly, resulting in jitter or dropped calls. Proxim cuts down on that handoff time by pre-authenticating users to nearby APs, said Lynn Lucas, director of product marketing for Proxim. Because the switch knows which APs are near the one a user is connected to, it pre-authenticates the user on the surrounding APs in anticipation of the user moving into the nearby coverage area. The switch supports pre-802.11e, the standard designed for quality of service (QoS). Proxim's implementation of the QoS mechanism improves power management on handsets because the APs work to minimize the time the radio in the handset must wake up. Rather than communicating with the handset haphazardly, the AP waits to send certain information during the same time frame that that handset delivers voice packets to the AP. The switch also does load balancing by shifting calls from one AP to another within range that may be less heavily loaded. The new APs support 802.11a, 802.11b, and 802.11g. Like previous versions of Proxim APs, customers can dedicate one of the radios to repeating traffic as a bridge. The APs support WPA and are software upgradeable to AES and 802.11i. They include rogue detection at both 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz for both 802.11b/g and 802.11a. Proxim is also marketing this platform for its ability to support seamless handoff from cellular to Wi-Fi networks, yet the switch and APs are just one piece of the puzzle that will enable such integration. "Seamless mobility is not something that one company can realize," said Lucas. "Our portion of the solution which we'll be introducing is the switch." Proxim partners Motorola and Avaya are working on other components. Before cell phone users can roam from the wide area networks to a WLAN, they'll need combined handsets and support from the cell operators, neither of which is in place yet. "Our message to the enterprise is that this is coming," Lucas said. IT managers typically look five years out when making technology investments...

Colubris Supports Voice 05/10/2004 05:35 PM
Colubris Networks, the maker of fat APs, introduced support for voice over Wi-Fi: The new system will support SpectraLink's voice over Wi-Fi solution. Colubris is touting its ability to isolate voice and data services so that each can have its own security parameters and quality of service profiles. The company says that previously companies would have to either resort to the lowest common level of security or deploy separate networks for each application. However, a number of WLAN switch vendors support voice and enable the separation of traffic based on the application. Voice traffic is often treated differently than data traffic because most voice over Wi-Fi handsets don't support VPNs. Enterprises that want to secure data transmissions using VPNs must treat that traffic differently than voice traffic....

The End of Proxim

The End of Proxim 06/17/2005 03:19 PM
Proxim will sell assets to Moseley Associates: I have long had a soft spot for Proxim, a firm that has developed and acquired some fundamental and interesting technology for consumers and enterprises over the year. They were an early advocate of 802.11a and 5 GHz, of point to multipoint broadband wireless, of HomeRF (yes, the business didn't fly, but it had great ideas behind it), and was an early entrant into enterprise-wide Wi-Fi AP management through a centralized Layer 3 software application. (They were against 802.11b for quite a while, fighting patent battles and other tactics until buying Agere's 802.11b product line.) Unfortunately, they were unable to capitalize on any of these markets to remain on top or keep up with the many rapid transitions in the industry. Being out in front and being right doesn't always make you money. Proxim also fell afoul of certain patent issues that cost them pretty pennies. Moseley is acquiring its assets for $21 million. Moseley has been moving aggressively into broadband wireless, and Proxim's portfolio gives them a competitive addition. They will operate Proxim's assets as a division, but are not technically purchasing Proxim which is in Chapter 11 bankruptcy at the moment. This means Proxim shareholders won't get a penny, but that was already expected....

Proxim Beefs Up APs 12/08/2003 04:46 PM
Proxim introduced today upgrades to its enterprise-grade Orinoco AP-2000 access point: Most of the new features are geared toward making it easier for network administrators to manage their wireless networks. Because the AP includes two slots for multiple radios, customers can now dedicate one radio for repeating traffic. For example, one slot can be used for an 802.11b radio that may serve customers on one end of a hotel floor. The second slot can contain an 802.11g radio, which offers a wired Ethernet link across the floor to another AP at the other end. "It's like a wired Ethernet link across the building, but you don't have to do an Ethernet drop," said Ben Gibson, director of marketing for Proxim. Because the repeating function uses a second radio, the traffic doesn't impact the bandwidth available to end users. Gibson expects the capability to appeal to managers of wharehouses or other large, open spaces where stringing Ethernet wires may prove difficult. "Essentially you're extending the cells to make a hot zone, rather than a hot spot," he said....

Proxim Targets Smaller Businesses 09/27/2004 09:32 AM
Proxim introduced today a new access point designed for small to medium enterprises: "It delivers the latest in terms of enterprise class features but does so with a price point that's competitive and in line with the requirements of small and medium businesses," said Ben Gibson, vice president of corporate marketing for Proxim. Proxim also introduced a software suite comprised of tools from Wavelink and Ekahau. Using the software combined with the new APs, customers get support for 802.11i, the security and encryption standard, as well as a draft version of 802.11e, which supports quality of service. The capability is useful for customers that want to deploy voice or other time-sensitive applications. The AP is also in line for WPA2 certification, an upgraded encryption standard set by the Wi-Fi Alliance that is based on 802.11i. The combined products offer rogue AP detection as well as rogue client detection, where the administrator can receive an alert when unauthorized clients attempt to connect to the network. For customers that may be migrating to stronger security mechanisms, the solution can support both WEP and WPA2 authentication at the same time. Because WPA2 requires a software upgrade on the client end, the capability allows customers to support all clients while they're in the process of upgrading....

Proxim, Intel Join Forces on WiMax

Proxim, Intel Join Forces on WiMax 06/17/2004 07:25 PM
Proxim and Intel will work together on WiMax, a boon to Proxim: The smaller company's stock shot up 27 percent today on the news that it would be participating in what Intel has increasingly focused on as the next important wireless market. WiMax has the potential to offer point-to-point and mobile standardized broadband wireless service, but its time to market is still a concern. If it doesn't achieve productization quicklly enough--and signs are that we might not see unlicensed WiMax products in the US until 2006--existing somewhat proprietary solutions could commoditize quickly enough for the market. Meanwhile, higher-speed cell data offerings might take the sheen off the necessity of mobile WiMax, although the latter's potential for using unlicensed bands gives it an edge. SkyPilot's announcement today--after a few years of development--of their broadband wireless system adds another player to a tightly focused market that hopes to fill in the home and business broadband market. Their equipment works in the unlicensed 5.8 GHz band. Although the press release says that Proxim expects to ship fixed broadband equipment in early 2005 and "portable" (not mobile) devices later next year, it doesn't state whether these will be shipped in the US or overseas, nor which bands will be used....

Is Kazaa Really Centralized?

Is Kazaa Really Centralized? 02/12/2004 02:44 AM
While many have been following the story about the music police raiding Sharman/Kazaa's office, one competitor thinks it's a good thing. Streamline, the makers of the Morpheus file sharing application, has a long history with Kazaa - as they used to license the same technology until they were accused of not paying their bills and were shut off. So, clearly, they are a bit biased against Kazaa, but they're bringing up a very important point. The whole point of having a truly distributed file sharing network is that it can't be shut down, even if you shut down the folks who released the software. Yet, Morpheus was shut down two years ago which made many people questio n how this was possible. Over time, these questions have faded, but the folks behind Morpheus are raising the question again and saying that Ka zaa is really centralized - and have been hiding behind their odd corporate structure to hide this fact for the last couple years. That would be quite a revelation, and would seriously damage Kazaa's legal standing. Thus, the folks behind Morpheus are hoping that the questionable raid on Kazaa's offices will establish this for certain. It appears that, once again, there isn't much harmony in the file sharing world.
