Jitney Rolls on to the Hamptons,
Wirelessly
06/02/2004 07:48 PM
The Hampton Jitney gets a cell data uplink to hook its passengers up via Wi-Fi (reg. required): In a short piece by your editor in Thursday's New York Times, I describe the Wi-RAN (Rolling Area Network) developed by CEDX and Best Mobile Computing, and in trials with the Hampton Jitney. The Jitney is the high-class way to commute between your summer home or just plain Long Island residence and Manhattan. Some people commute--and I kid you not--every day, clocking in 3 or 4 hours roundtrip or more. In that environment, as on trains and planes, people don't have just quiet time to contemplate but empty time that's worth filling. Some of the Jitney coaches also have electrical outlets, meaning that you don't have to worry about discharging your battery, either. While the service runs today at 100 Kbps, the New York metro area will certainly be one of the first to see higher-speed cell offerings or even other forms of mobile wireless (cue Craig McCaw's entrance) allowing the service to expand its speed over time. Service runs $8 per trip or $40 per month for unlimited usage....

New York Group Plans Redunant Telecom
Wirelessly

New York Group Plans Redunant Telecom
Wirelessly
04/24/2004 10:43 PM
The Alliance for Downtown New York proposes a wireless backup plan for telecommunications: For $10 million, the Alliance proposes building a laser and microwave system that would sit on top of five of the tallest buildings in the area and have line of sight from most offices. The system would relay to two other locations, one in Manhattan and one probably in New Jersey, in the event of a loss of service. The idea is that companies unable to bear the enormous costs of building their own similar backup systems could piggyback on the Alliance's, which would be vendor neutral to phone companies. This might make businesses who locate in the area less concerned about being cut off from telecom in the future, come what may, although real estate agents think it won't make a practical difference: rents are cheaper and that attracts tenants. The article mentions that the Alliance issued a report about its free Wi-Fi zones in which they said that the network had become one of the busiest of its kind in the world. However, the report isn't on their Web site; I'm trying to get a copy. The redundant telecom network could be used actively to provide more bandwidth to the free Wi-Fi zones, the Alliance said. You know how sometimes you think up a gadget but you figure that no one will ever build it? Well, the Omnifi is one of those gadgets, except that it's real. The Omnifi is a digital media player for your car with a 20GB hard drive and an 802.11b WiFi attachment which actually makes it possible (assuming your car is within range) to wirelessly beam your music directly to your car from your PC. You can also set it to automatically transmit all sorts of information to your car, like the weather, news, etc. The hard drive can also detach and be connected to a PC (sorta like the Phatnoise system) if your car is parked too far away for WiFi. The Starving Ocean : A large collection of articles by Debbie MacKenzie on the death of the ocean. The idea is that removing most of the fish from the sea might be sort of bad for the marine ecosystem as a whole. Her writing style is a bit kooky, but she has been right on some points (ie. the Grey Seal thing). Oh, and fishing is also responsible for the rise of atmospheric carbon dioxide.

Big Fish

Big Fish 05/13/2004 10:53 AM

I've always admired Tim Burton's imagination and enjoyed his movies, even if many of them are uneven. Since I missed Big Fish when it was in theaters last year, I've been looking forward to seeing it on DVD. Well, last night I finally watched it - and now I really wish I'd seen it on the big screen.

Forget the poor reviews. This was - by far - his best work, and ranks as one of my favorite movies. Watch it if you get the chance!

(Yeah, I know this has nothing to do with my software, but I'm a movie buff as well as a software guy, so what the heck...)

Frozen seas. A brief but kind of amazing collection of photos of the deck of a fishing trauler in fridgid conditions, where every exposed surface has layers of frozen saltwater accumulated. The city of Commerce is just fifteen minutes down the freeway from Hollywood, but the Commerce Casino is a thousand miles away from Odessa. There's no alley to walk down, no bouncer to deal with, and you're more likely to talk to a valet than a crackhead on your way into the club.

From The Standard, we drove across the 10 and picked up the 5 in the East LA interchange. Even though it was after ten, it was backed up like rush hour. I pointed at a sign that advised 45 MPH on the turn.

"Since I was sixteen, every time I pass that sign, I laugh. I don't think 45 has ever been a reduction in my speed through here." I said.

"Do you have to get up early tomorrow?" I said.

"No. I'm going to the Dodger game at 1," he said.

"Want to get out of here and go play cards?"

"Are you finally taking me to Odessa?"

"No. It's Saturday, so it's a dance club tonight," I said. "I hear it gets pretty crazy."

"Plato's retreat crazy?" he said.

"You stole that from my blog!" I said.

We both laughed.

"Let's go to Commerce," I said.
