When XP came out, all the feature lists mentioned Credential Manager, which uses the Windows Data Protection API (DPAPI) to do something that sounds just like what the OS X Keychain does. On XP, you get to the Credential Manager like so: Control Panel -> User Accounts -> Manage my Network Passwords. ...

Gizmodo has the scoop on a line of Gundam-branded USB keychain drives.
To appeal to the "maniacs" (Japanese for "someone who knows too much,") IO Data has included two features for collectors of the drives - and I'm not making this up - by installing the included "Cute" software, your desktop wallpaper will automatically change to a corresponding Gundam wallpaper. When you take it out, it will go back to normal. The second feature is the screensaver, which when you purchase and use more than one of these drives, will add the respective characters to the ensuing action. You too can engage in intergalactic space combat for about $55 USD for a USB 2.0 mecha, or $45 for a USB 1.1 mecha.

There is talk of this design being picked up and mass produced by a couple of different companies; make that happen, boys, because I want it.

Here's one for the IT folks reading the site who can't stand people installing stuff on their own and making life difficult for others. It's the story of a law firm where a few people at the firm got some spam about some "great new screensavers" which they decided to install... which unleashed some sort of malicious file that eventually meant the entire network was shut down, and each PC had to be cleaned up individually, for a total cost of somewhere around $100,000. Who are these people who aren't skeptical of spam?

Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.0: Acrobat Reader 7.0 is out, and it sounds like it's much less aggravating.

Adobe have finally got around to addressing the biggest single problem with the Acrobat Reader - startup speed. In my web-browser (Firefox), Version 7.0 startup is quicker than I ever remember it being. There's no splash screen and no (visible) plug-in initialisation, just a quick transition from web page to PDF - even on first load!

Adobe releases patches for Acrobat and

Adobe releases patches for Acrobat and
Reader
06/17/2005 03:18 PM
Adobe Systems on Wednesday rolled out patches for security vulnerabilities found in Adobe Reader 7.0 and 7.0.1, and in Adobe Acrobat 7.0 and 7.0.1.

The hole in the products, referred to as an XML External Entity vulnerability, under certain circumstances allows XML scripts to be used to discover a user's local files.

According to Adobe officials, the vulnerability is within the Adobe Reader control. If an XML script is embedded in JavaScript, it is possible to discover the existence of local files, according to a security advisory from the company. An attacker could then maliciously use the gathered information. But the statement pointed out that the local files can be found only if the attacker knows the complete file names and paths in advance of such an attack.

The vulnerability impacts Acrobat and Reader running on Windows and Mac platforms.

Adobe recommends that Reader and Acrobat for Windows customers download the updates provided on the Adobe Web site here.

The company said it will release an update for the Mac OS versions shortly. Until the Mac patch is available, Adobe advises end-users to disable any Acrobat JavaScript. This should protect systems from the vulnerability.
