IDEA#.NET is coming... 02/03/2004 05:17 AM

This was posted on the intellij.net forums today: EAP of VS.NET plugin is planned for February 10. -- Valentin Kipiatkov Chief Scientist, Vice President of Product Development JetBrains, Inc http://www.jetbrains.com "Develop with pleasure!" I hate to hype this up too much as the first early access release is bound to have its share of bugs, but I am really looking... (254 words)

Here's a site that's trying to "use up" the Republican's virtual space by reloading "several Republican websites" automatically every 60 seconds. See, if we all leave the protest page up in our browser, we'll show them Republican bastards ... well, I'm really not sure what we'll show them. I'm confused enough about this that I am only reluctantly posting the protest page's url: http://users.drew.edu/clotito/protest_rnc.htm. Maybe you can explain to me if this page is: 1. A sincere but misguided attempt to make a point no one understands through a protest that no one will notice 2. A devious attempt to...

The national oil reserve should be converted into an instrument of market stabilization.  Currently, the US maintains reserves in place for times of war or severe supply disruption.  The US reserves should be refocused to become a service that sells oil to make up for any political/guerrilla induced production shortfalls.  This would require a much larger reserve (1 billion barrels is a target).  If Iraqi guerrillas reduce Iraq's production by 1 m barrels, the US should sell oil to make up the shortfall.  If Venezuela stops production due to political turmoil, replace their 2.5 m barrels a day.  The net benefit to the world from this over the last month?  ~$2-3 billion.

Idea a Day - Where Ideas are Free
http://www.idea-a-day.com/

Idea a Day will publish an original idea every day for the rest of time. The ideas published will be free of copyright, however valuable they may be. They are there to be read, to be enjoyed, to be exploited. Whatever. The project represents a completely fresh approach to the handling of ideas and intellectual property. This is not a get rich quick scheme. There are no plans to float, no advertisers or sponsors lined up. idea-a-day.com exists because it can. Because it will be fascinating to see what happens when these ideas are made available to the world.

DRUMS, a new P2P idea

DRUMS, a new P2P idea 05/06/2004 01:03 PM

Scott Matthews, of turnstyle web mp3 player fame, has launched a new project called DRUMS. It's slighty inspired by Creative Commons and the goal is to create a P2P network that is fair to both copyright owners and folks seeking content. If you have something to add to his proposal, pop on over and drop Scott a line.

iPod iDea 04/09/2004 04:01 PM
I stopped by the recently opened new Apple store here yesterday and saw the iPod mini. It's a beaut! Before yesterday, I would wonder why anyone would buy a 4Gb mini when they can get its 15Gb big brother for only $50 more. I wonder no longer. Apart from being smaller, it's styling is even better than the original iPod,... (370 words)

Dean's bad idea

Dean's bad idea 01/26/2004 12:40 PM
Declan reports on a bad idea put forward by Dean 15 months before he announced his run for the presidency (and six months after 9/11): Requiring users to insert an identity card — presented as an upgrade of today's drivers license — into a computer in order to log on. Apparently, the campaign is not responding to questions about this. It's certainly not an idea I've heard bruited about by the campaign, but I'm certainly not privy to every bruiting. (Thanks to Eric for the link.)...

ObjectSpaces: What's the big idea?

ObjectSpaces: What's the big idea? 03/06/2004 02:03 AM
Should your data become objects or your objects become data? That’s the debate. If you build apps focused around objects and just want those suckers persisted then you want your objects to become data. If you’ve got a database and you are building apps around that data using an object-oriented language you probably want your data to become objects. Which is more prevalent, I don’t know, probably the latter.

Christmas Gift Idea

Christmas Gift Idea 12/22/2004 01:49 AM
On Saturday a friend showed me a fabulous book: The Complete Cartoons of The New Yorker. This is a huge monster of a coffee table book that comes with two CD-ROMs that contain every cartoon every published in the New Yorker (68,000 cartoons).  A painful $60 list price but discounted to $36 at Amazon.  If you're looking for a last-minute Christmas gift idea, I think this is a safe one.

When Is Tech Spending a Bad Idea?

When Is Tech Spending a Bad Idea? 09/24/2004 01:37 PM
Not expecting a rush of IT spending during the last three months of 2004, Hewlett-Packard Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Carly Fiorina said this week that IT buyers have become smarter and more discriminating in their IT purchasing than they were just five years ago, and that they now realize that technology spending can sometimes be a "bad thing." Speaking to a room full of financial analysts at the Banc of America Securities Investment Conference in San Francisco, Fiorina dismissed the idea that corporate budget surpluses would drive an IT spending increase in the fourth quarter of 2004.

"For each of the last three years and certainly this year as well, there's been a lot of talk that we're going to see a fourth quarter budget flush," she said. "I just don't see it happening."
