Apple Switching to Intel?
06/05/2005 11:21 PMAccording to this CNET News.com article, Apple plans to slowly phase
out their partnership with IBM and switch to Intel-based
microprocessors. Is this simply a move to a better
microprocessor...

Apple *is* switching to Intel chips
Apple *is* switching to Intel chips
06/17/2005 03:29 PMThe WWDC keynote just ended (notes here and here) and the news is pretty big in Apple land: Apple
is switching to Intel chips (press
release). A few notes:
- As speculated here
and on Slashdot, Intel will not be making PowerPC chips for
Apple.
- Intel will be making x486 chips for Apple.
- For the last 5 years, every copy of OS X has been compiled
on both PowerPC and Intel platforms. This apparently is the
long-rumored Marklar project.
- Jobs says developing apps to run on Intel Macs is easy...there's a
checkbox in the developer tools that "makes a cross-platform single
binary". Demo of Mathematica running on an Intel Mac from a guy from
Wolfram...it only took them two days [some sources are now saying two
hours, not days] to port it to Intel.
- Running PowerPC-compiled programs on an Intel Mac will be handled
through emulation. Gold star to John Gruber for guessing this
one.
I'm sure there's more, but those are the important bits. And I know
this is Steve Jobs talking to us here, but from where I'm sitting
(across the country, reading paraphrase transcripts), the transition
has been well prepared for by Apple for a number of years and looks
like it will happen a lot more smoothly than all the over-the-weekend
hand-wringing indicated that it would.
Update: Dave
Winer is reporting that:
1. Apple is not going into the software business, their
operating system will not run on other vendor's hardware. So you won't
be running the Mac OS on Dell, HP or IBM, for example. and 2. While
Windows is not explicitly supported, they won't do anything to prevent
Windows from running on their hardware.
Update #2: From
news.com:
After Jobs' presentation, Apple Senior Vice President
Phil Schiller addressed the issue of running Windows on Macs, saying
there are no plans to sell or support Windows on an Intel-based Mac.
"That doesn't preclude someone from running it on a Mac. They probably
will," he said. "We won't do anything to preclude that." However,
Schiller said the company does not plan to let people run Mac OS X on
other computer makers' hardware. "We will not allow running Mac OS X
on anything other than an Apple Mac," he said.
Reports Say Apple Switching to Intel
Reports Say Apple Switching to Intel
06/05/2005 11:59 PMReports on CNET News.com and The Wall Street Journal claim that Apple
will announce a switch to Intel x86 processors on Monday at its annual
Worldwide Developers Conference - a move that has been rumored for
years yet never materialized. According to the report, the switch
would start with Apple's low-end computers by the middle of next year.
But many remain skeptical due to a number of unanswered questions.

06/05/2005 10:59 PMAP - A stormy, decade-long relationship between Apple Computer Inc.
and IBM is over, according to published reports. Apple CEO Steve Jobs
is expected to announce Monday morning at the company's software
developers conference in San Francisco that Apple will discontinue
using microprocessor chips made by IBM in favor of Intel chips,
according to CNET Networks Inc.'s News.com and The Wall Street
Journal.
Apple and its dual-core option
Apple and its dual-core option
08/22/2004 11:29 AMAccording to an article published Wednesday in The Register, it
seems that Freescale Semiconductor Inc., a subsidiary of Motorola
Inc., is set to unveil a dual-core processor at Microprocessor Forum
in San Jose in October.
"Freescale's dual-core PowerPC is expected to sport an on-board
memory controller, this one capable of supporting DDR 2 SDRAM, along
with a Gigabit Ethernet controller. It is also expected to use the
Rapid IO bus, according to past Motorola pronouncements, though MPX
bus support is also anticipated to maintain backward compatibility…
(with speeds) beyond 2GHz."
Of course, this all sounds great, but with all the chatter regarding
dual-processor PowerBooks, this dual-core nonsense
is bound to cause some confusion. So, allow me to explain, as best I
understand it, anyway.
The main issue here is heat. As we know, a single processor produces a
heck of a lot of warmth, and the issue of cooling has been a major
bone of contention in Apple’s hardware. As it goes with the current
offerings, the faster the chip, the hotter the output, making it
incredibly difficult for Apple to implement either dual G4 or G5
architecture into its current line of laptops.
That being said, dual-core processors represent an interesting option
— or at least a stop-gap between the PowerBook-friendly G5.
Dual-cores can process two times more data per clock, which ultimately
allows the whole system to perform much better when running under
processor-intensive applications.
Furthermore, both cores have their own cache. Level 2 and level 3
cache have always been an issue with G4 processors, as their general
clock and bus speed hindrances have been compensated for with a fair
amount of cache.
However, as with the G5, dual G4 and basically every new chip that may
appear the horizon is the architecture of Freescale’s current MPX bus.
Since Apple’s not likely to overhaul its flagship laptop (i.e., with
RapidIO interconnect) until it is capable to sport a G5, so the
dual-core may be as crippled as the DDR SDRAM that currently pumps
through the PowerBook.
Dual-core may not mean much to the PowerBook as it stands, but it
definitely spells good things to come for the PowerPC processor
— both from Motorola and (hopefully, eventually) IBM. Since
keeping PowerBook's cool and kernel-panic free is of utmost
importance, dual-core could very well represent the future of Apple's
professional portables.
I can see it now: One Apple, Two Cores.

Item! MacMinute has picked up a scan of a
upcoming magazine ad detailing the "seamless integration of iPod and
automobile," specifically, it seems, the BMW 3 Series, X3, and Z4.
Although there's no picture of the dock, the new adapter will allow
control of the iPod via controls on the steering wheel. If they
integrate an iPod-like touch wheel around the BMW logo I will
flip. Not that I can afford a Bimmer, mind you, but just
because that would be hot. Developing!
The ads lead to the site "iPodYourBMW.com," which for now remains
offline.

Law to make iTunes compatible with

Law to make iTunes compatible with
Microsoft?
04/07/2005 05:57 PMUS legislators are debating whether to force Apple's products to
interoperate with Microsoft's. The Congress have been considering a
plan that would outlaw music protected by proprietary digital rights
management (DRM) technology, such as Apple's FairPlay, which stops
iTunes downloads being played on Microsoft digital music players and
vice versa.
However, yesterday's Congressional subcommittee hearing on 'Digital
Music Interoperability and Availability', which included debate on
mandating interoperability for digital music, received a 'hands off'
message from industry representatives. William Pence, Napster CTO,
told the subcommittee that the music industry will eventually promote
interoperability itself without the need for government
intervention.
