online music. That is despite Apple's (AAPL) record string of recent
achievements, including 200 million songs sold at its iTunes Music
Store, and nearly 4 million iPod digital music players moved into
consumers' homes this year. Gorog runs Apple rival Napster, which
offers digital downloads and a music subscription deal. Consumers get
unlimited access to listen to 700,000 songs for $9.95 monthly.

generation) mobile broadband phones.

NTT DoCoMo hits 1Gbps in 4G field trials
06/24/2005 06:55 PMNTT DoCoMo, Japan's biggest mobile communications carrier, has
successfully tested 1Gbps transmission speeds using 4G
(fourth-generation) technology in outdoor experiments, taking 4G a
step nearer to use in mobile phones, the company said Friday.

In experiments conducted in May, the technology worked at up to 400
meters, according to Miki Nakajima, a DoCoMo spokeswoman.
While the company demonstrated 1Gbps transmission speeds with an
earlier version of the same technology last August, that was in the
lab, so the latest experiments show the technology is a step nearer to
practical usage, she said.
The company's current 3G (third-generation) network offers download
and upload speeds up to 384Kbps, and DoCoMo won't build a 4G network
until around 2010, she said.
Before 2010, however, the company will be increasing the speed of
its 3G network.
From April, it will introduce a technology called HSDPA (High Speed
Downlink Packet Access) to its 3G network, which will boost speeds to
up to 14Mbps, although the faster network will only be available in
major cities initially, the company said.
By the end of 2007, DoCoMo will also have decided the technical
specifications for an even faster technology called Super 3G, Nakajima
said. This will offer up to 100Mbps downlink and 50Mbps uplink speeds,
and the network should be operational between 2008 and 2010, the
company said.

Yahoo Pushing Ahead With Email
Authentication Plan
12/08/2003 04:41 AMFor the past few years, various parties (users, companies,
governments) have been saying that we need to do something about spam.
However, every time they get together, the argument gets bogged down
over things like "well, how do we define spam?" or the government
comes up with some sort of quick and dirty law that does nothing to
help the situation. Well, now, it appears that Yahoo has had enough
of the various consortiums and groups trying to deal with the spam
problem and realized, "hey, we're a pretty big email player - maybe we
can just force through a plan." They're working on an
authentication scheme that would let senders prove they are who they
say they are - which would make those who aren't authenticated
more suspect. They're also pushing the solution out to others to try
to make it a sort of de facto standard. On the whole, this doesn't
seem like a bad idea. If you could block out all the forged email, it
would get rid of an awful lot of spam. Then, any of the spam that
does get through could be tracked down more easily as well.

DoCoMo Sets 3G Speed Plan
01/06/2005 02:32 PM DoCoMo is moving on up to Super 3G, then 4G: DoCoMo seems to have
responded to the 3GPP discussions about 100 Mbps cellular networks by
2009 by talking further about its own plans. The company currently has
a 3G network running W-CDMA with about 384 Kbps download and 128 Kbps
upload. They plan to add HSDPA by March 2006 for 1 to 2 Mbps upload
and download. Then on to Super 3G in the 2007 to 2010 framework which
they anticipate providing 100 Mbps down and 50 Mbps of raw speed,
which probably translates to something like 15 to 20 Mbps down and 5
to 10 Mbps up. Quite impressive, but they'll be competing against
fixed WiMax and 802.11n Wi-Fi clouds by that point. DoCoMo says Super
3G is mostly a software upgrade, which makes it a more feasible
migration path. Finally, starting in 2010, DoCoMo will roll out 4G
with 1 Gbps downlink speeds. It all sounds very pretty on paper, but
DoCoMo has managed to execute in the past on high-speed cellular
technology that has sounded slightly ludicrously ahead of its time
until they launched it....
