“A new version of the MyDoom computer virus that’s targeted to attack Internet search engines spread so quickly Monday morning that some Web surfers received error messages when attempting to use Google.com.” I wondered what the heck happened! That’s the first time that Google has *ever* failed to work for me, so I was a bit freaked out. I even tried the UK and CA sites, only to find the same failure message. I actually…

SCO Issues Bounty for MyDoom Creator 01/28/2004 03:26 AM
The controversial SCO Group has offered $250,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or group responsible for creating the MyDoom virus. The company also said Tuesday that it is working with U.S. Secret Service and FBI to identify the author of the virus. Also known as Novarg and Mimail.R, MyDoom spread quickly across the Internet Monday, traveling as an e-mail attachment and infecting PCs whose users opened the file. The program instructs infected PCs to send data to SCO's Web server from Feb. 1 to Feb. 12, essentially flooding the Web site and making it inaccessible.

FTC Offers Bounty to Name Spammers

FTC Offers Bounty to Name Spammers 09/19/2004 12:39 AM

The United States Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced, in a public report, that a system of monetary rewards would help improve the enforcement of the Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing Act of 2002 (CAN-SPAM Act.) That Act, which became effective on January 1, 2004, required the FTC to conduct a study and provide a report to Congress on a CAN-SPAM "bounty system." While the fact that bounties may be offered to those who help authorities in nabbing spammers doesn't unusual, what is very much out of the ordinary is the projected bounty amounts necessary to make them effective.

The FTC reports three hurdles exist in enforcing the CAN-SPAM Act: 1) identifying and locating the spammer, 2) developing sufficient evidence to prove the spammer is legally responsible for sending the spam, and 3) obtaining the source of funding for the bounties. The report states that those with the information most helpful to authorities are whistleblowers and insiders: those who have had personal or business contact with the spammers, themselves. Because of the real possibility of retaliation, the monetary awards encourage the whistleblowers to come forward. The FTC thinks that awards of about $100,000, upward to $250,000, are reasonable, with funding for the bounty program to come from federal taxes.

Dave's Opinion
I wish I knew a spammer; for a quarter of a million, I could by RV my kids are clamoring for and go on the road for a few months. Why do we need an incentive to do the right thing. Turning in details of bona fide spammers is just a good thing to do. Why should we expect to be bribed by the government?

A German news site has offered a bounty of €10,000 (about $12,000 US) to anyone who provides information leading to the capture of the perpetrator(s) of a distributed denial of service attack against the site. The Age is reporting today that Heise Online, one of the biggest German publishers online, is seeking information about the machines that actively took part in the attacks on February 1 and February 2. According to the Internet Storm Center, Heise said the attacks targeted port 80 (on which a webserver normally runs), first hitting 193.99.144.71 and later 193.99.144.85. It said the sender addresses were spoofed and, in some cases, addresses reserved for private networks were used. Another similar attack targeted the Heise mailserver (193.99.145.50) on port 25 (the standard port for SMTP services) during the same timeframe. Heise said the logs of routers may show accumulations of packets which were 40 bytes long.

iTunes Music Store RSS Generator

"I learned from Bill Bumgarner that the iTunes Music Store now has RSS feeds.I'll withhold comment on...." [More Like This WebLog]

This is the kind of thing I've been waiting for from Apple. They've got a good community built up around iTunes, but they've done a poor job of connecting and exposing it. I'll have to play around with this to see what it really means, but it would be great if I could find iTunes users with similar tastes in music and then subscribe to their feeds.

On a side note, here's yet another reason for full RSS feeds. I can't get to the More Like This site right now, which means I can't read the rest of the post OR get to the link. Incredibly frustrating.

Bounty Hunting

Bounty Hunting 12/04/2003 10:40 PM

Via Jeremy Hylton, Mark Shuttleworth (super-rich geek and space tourist) is offering $100,000 worth of bounties in 2004 to developers willing to help out with a number of Open Source projects, most of which are to be developed in Python. A comparison can be made here with Mitch Kapor, another geek-done-well who funds open source development through his sponsorship of the Open Source Applications Foundation.

Personally I think this is a great way of funding open source development, although a counter-argument is that this kind of reward could encourage the wrong kind of attitude within the open source community with programmers dedicating their time to paid projects at the expense of others. I don't see this happening - people work on open source projects for the love of doing so and to scratch an itch. If you have the money to spend and want to offer it up as a bounty for someone to further develop a product you like then more power to you! I would certainly consider doing so if some freak incident left me rolling in cash (very unlikely to happen considering my complete disinterest in nursing my finances).

Bob Wyman: PubSub.com is willing to offer a $5,000 bounty to whoever builds the "best" full implementation as an open source Apache module by Jan 1, 2005. It seems that some of the smaller but more aggressive feed consumers have the most to benefit from bandwidth reduction measures than even the mega colossal feed producers do.  Uncompressed, undelta'ed, full text feeds may be becoming the barrier to entry to the next Bloglines, Feedster, PubSub or Technorati.
