Two new cameras announced by Nikon this week share a price ($1,000) and a target market (affluent amateur photographers). But the similarities end there.

Nikon D70. Yes please.

Nikon D70. Yes please. 01/28/2004 03:36 PM
Nikon have announced their competitor to Canon's Digital Rebel. The D70. I would love to have one of these along with a nice small digicam like a PowerShot S400. Alas, I'll stick it out with my now-ancient (4 year old) Olympus C2020....

Nikon Adds 802.11g

Nikon Adds 802.11g 09/16/2004 01:02 PM
Nikon's new 12 megapixal camera will feature an 802.11g adapter option: Nikon currently enables 802.11b access but the new adapter option will allow the faster transmission of photos. The wireless access combined with software enables wireless remote control from a laptop of the camera. The camera, without the Wi-Fi adapter, is expected to cost a whopping $5,000. The previous version of the camera costs around $3,000 but sold very well to its target professional audience. A review of the 802.11b version offers more details on what Wi-Fi connectivity means for photographers....

Nikon Coolpix S1

Nikon Coolpix S1 03/17/2005 03:52 AM

coolpix_s1.jpg imageOut of seemingly nowhere emerges the Nikon Coolpix S1, obviously a stab at recent offerings from Casio and Sony (think Exilim and Cybershot T series). But gee whiz, I had no idea a Nikon could look anything like this — it has a 5.1MP CCD and 0.75" thick aluminum body. Estimated at around 45,000 yen, the S1 provides 3x optical zoom, a boatload of photographic features I'm having a hard time translating like "Face Clear Function", a 2.5" monitor and SD memory card slot. Expect to see the S1 available in three colors: Metal Silver, Dolce Black and Cream White.

Nikon D2X, 12.4-Megapixel DSLR 09/16/2004 05:52 AM

nikon_d2x_1 imageNikon has finally announced the successor to their D1X and boy, does it look hot! Called the D2X (surprise!), the defining feature of the new DSLR is a 12.4-megapixel CMOS sensor that can shoot up to five frames per second at its highest resolution, but can also be bumped down to 6.8-megapixel to increase its framerate to 8 per second. In addition, Nikon has updated their Wi-Fi transmitter for the camera; the WT-2 has both 802.11b/g support and "Capture Control," giving you the ability to control the shutter of the camera from a PC or other mobile device.

Nikon not abandoning 35mm -- yet 11/18/2003 12:42 PM
Turned out to be completely untrue, but last week a Japanese newspaper reported that Nikon was planning to kill their line of 35mm compact cameras and go entirely digital. Though you gotta wonder how long it'll be until one of the big manufacturers does decide to exit the consumer 35mm camera business entirely. Can't be more than a year or two. Read...

Nikon announced on Thursday an addition to its line of professional SLR cameras, the D2X, as well as three new Coolpix cameras: the 4800, 8400 and 8800 models. In addition, the company introduced a new lens, the AF-S VR Nikkor 300mm f/2.8G IF-ED super-telephoto, which is compatible with all of its digital and film SLR cameras. Expected to ship in January 2005, the new lens offers two vibration reduction modes, a focus mode switch for choosing between manual-priority auto-focus and manual focus, a silent wave motor and Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass. No pricing was announced.

Nikon announces D70 digital SLR camera

Nikon announces D70 digital SLR camera 12/03/2003 09:55 AM
Nikon Inc. on Wednesday announced development of its D70, a new digital SLR camera expected to hit stores in spring 2004. A lot of technical details about the camera were left out of Nikon's announcement, but the company noted that the D70 will accept interchangeable lenses. The camera body uses a Nikon F lens mount and sports Nikon's DX format sensor, so it's compatible with all AF Nikkor lenses.

Nikon 4 Megapixel Coolpix 4100

Nikon 4 Megapixel Coolpix 4100 05/28/2004 12:44 PM

nikoncp4100-press.jpg imageNikon's got a new Coolpix coming out this summer with a 4-megapixel sensor, 3x optical zoom, 1.6-inch LCD and--in a rare return to early digicam form--14.5MB of internal memory. The Coolpix 4100 will also take SD cards for additional storage and should be price around $300. One thing I love about Nikon is that they tend to release their own underwater housings for their cameras and the 4100 will be getting one, as well. Even though many 3rd party housings are just as good or better, it's usually a lot easier to buy from the manufacturer.

Ever read a company's Security and Exchange Commission filings? No? Consider yourself lucky. But it you want to invest in Google Inc.'s IPO, you'll be urged at every turn to read the company's prospectus. I agree that it's critical if you're thinking of putting money into the company best known for its free Internet search engine.

Disneyland Club 33 1967 prospectus

Disneyland Club 33 1967 prospectus 06/22/2005 01:49 AM
Cory Doctorow: Check out this scanned-in 1967 prospectus for membership in the then-new Club 33, the secretive exclusive members' club over Disneyland's Pirates of the Caribbean.
High above the streets and courtyards of New Orleans Square, hidden from public view and the bustle of a typical day at Disneyland, is a page out of old New Orleans that even the proud Creole society might have chosen and cherished as its own.

Here French doors open onto balconies that overlook Disneyland's own muddy Mississippi, the Rivers of America. Here, in the tradition of the good host, Walt Disney and his staff planned and executed Disneyland's most exclusive setting - part elegant dining room, part relaxed refreshment center, part distinguished art gallery, part meeting room and part private showplace.

Everything - from plush furnishings to crystal chandeliers, from original paintings and sketches to a personalized Audio-Animatronic show for members and guests only - has been chosen or specially created for Club 33, by the staff of WED Enterprises and by other Disney artisans.

Here, away from the general public, adult beverages will be available, including the finest of wines to match the food specialities of the house.

Link (Thanks, Kirby!)

Update: Jen points out the club33 Flickr tag for photos of the contemporary Club 33.
