Are we sick of Google yet? Expect to get even sicker as the Google IPO becomes an exercise in futility for the company and the investment community at large. The reason why this has turned into a laughable fiasco is because the investment bankers, the brokers, and the middlemen have decided to queer this deal in any way they can. “At first, nobody bought Chester Carlson’s strange idea. But trillions of documents later, his invention is the biggest thing in printing since Gutenburg. In 1959, it introduced a machine that made sharp, permanent copies on ordinary paper - a huge breakthrough. The process,…

How many links from Google to your site?

How many links from Google to your site? 07/13/2004 11:44 PM

Last summer, I setup a dual platform system, and it uses a single keyboard and mouse linked to a PC for control, but I have to keep an extra mouse on the mac to wake it up.

During a reboot of my PC today, I had five minutes of keyboardless control of my mac, using its own mouse. With Google.com as my browser start page, I figured I'd surf around as I waited for the PC and its keyboard to come back to life. In a matter of seconds, I clicked around Google, ended up at Blogger, a few clicks later I was at Evhead, and from there I was at my own site. Whoa! How'd that happen?

I went back and counted the steps:

1. From Google to the "more »" link
2. From the more page to Blogger
3. From Blogger to their about page
4. From the about page to the "buy us" link to Dan Gillmor's story on the Blogger/Pyra deal
5. The story links to Evhead
6. Ev's site links to an entry on my blog

Six links from Google.com to my blog. Actually, a few hours later, that post has scrolled off Evhead so I guess it's not such a short path anymore.

A minute of more clicking and I found a second path from Google to my site that used 7 links. From Blogger, to their Knowledge Base, is a link to a Wired story on Blogger Burnout, which links to Kottke.org which links to my site. While the KB link to Wired is also time-sensitive and will scroll off, I suspect from the Evhead path, you can get to almost any blog online.

I'm kind of amazed I can get from Google to my site, but I'm more amazed it only took a handful of clicks (remember, since I didn't have a keyboard entry for a few minutes, this is how I discovered it). I wonder if someone could write a simple script to determine the most direct path from Google to your site.

I think I stumbled upon a new web game. How many links does it take to get to your site from Google.com?

Google Site Search Change

Google Site Search Change 01/25/2004 09:24 AM

Google has a made a subtle but big change with site searches. You can now do a "site" search with no keywords and Google will return all pages in its index for that site. Here's one for this site, though I'm curious how Google thinks it has 7,170 pages.

You used to have to enter a keyword, so Google would search the site for that word. This is a handy way to check that a site is in the Google index.

Fiber to the home deployment schedule

Fiber to the home deployment schedule 01/07/2004 05:23 PM
Reuters: "Verizon said Monday that its initial [fiber] deployment plans involve about 1 million homes next year, with the pace potentially doubling in 2005."

So let's see.  Verizon has 30 million residential customers.  If they pass 1 million homes with fiber in 2004 and double that to 2 million per year in 2005, they'll light everyone up by 2020.  Assuming they actually deploy this time, unlike prior telco fiber promises.

Of course they picked asymmetric BPON equipment instead of cheaper, faster, symmetric EPON equipment. Then, adding insult to injury: "Our approach to FTTP recognizes that broadband is a truly interactive technology, with upstream capabilities playing just as key a role in consumers' online activities as downstream speeds."

Ohio Halts Electronic Voting Deployment

Ohio Halts Electronic Voting Deployment 12/03/2003 12:17 PM
Beck writes "Electronic voting was to be deployed in Ohio statewide by March, but due to numerous security flaws found in the voting systems the state has delayed certification of the systems, possibly until 2006. Diebold's system had the most problems, but all of the systems had numerous flaws. Many scenarios were found where a person without proper authority was able to manipulate election results. The Ohio Secretary of State released a report detailing 57 security flaws. (The entire report was released, unlike the state of Maryland, which blacked out much of their report.) There was no indication in the article of whether the state will require voter-verified printed receipts. By the way, the Diebold poll supervisor password is 1111 - nationwide - which was just one of the many flaws discovered." The article actually suggests that most of the problems may be solved in 60 days and the machines may be offered again just a few months later than originally planned - so it doesn't sound like they'll require a paper trail. Also, it's pointed out in the article that all of these machines declared problematic had already been "certified" by the state, showing just how ridiculous the certification process is.

Verizon Challenges Cable With Fiber TV

Verizon Challenges Cable With Fiber TV 04/18/2005 06:02 PM
Verizon on Monday touted its FiOS television service as "a compelling alternative" to cable TV. However, the company has a major roadblock ahead: laws. Currently, to offer any kind of video across its fiber networks, the law stipulates that Verizon would have to obtain a second franchise from local authorities.

Verizon to offer 30mb/2mb fiber
connections

Verizon to offer 30mb/2mb fiber
connections
09/18/2004 01:56 AM
Thanks to Neowin subscriber RDX1 for the heads up in BPN!

Fashonistas love to flaunt their prada shoes. Rappers pile on the bling until thier sparkle is blinding. Corporate honchos throw parties with ice sculptures that pee vodka. So what do geeks do to establish their place on the food chain? They boast about their fat broadband connections.

But the pricey 1.5Mbps connections are looking mighty foolish in Keller, Texas these days. That's where Verizon first introduced its fibre to the premises (fttp) broadband service, and its hardly an emblem of privilege for the grossly wealthy. Instead, residents are capable of pulling down an astonishing 5mbps for as low as $35 per month.

Verizon is delivering these truly decadent speeds using fiber-optic cables that transmit voice, data, and video. And the company tells us that speed isn't the only advantage offered by fiber-optic transmission. Unlike cable, bandwith isn't shared among customers, and unlike DSL, you don't have to be close to the central office to get optimal performance.

Verizon is calling its service Fios (pronounced FYE-ose, an incantation we've confirmed doesn't open a portal to hell), and is already expanding its service to California and Florida. The pricing scheme, which the company tells us is not merely an introductory offer, touts 5mbps/2mbps (downstream/upstream) for $40 a month as a standalone package or $35 a month as part of a local and/or long-distance calling plan. You'll also be able to get a 15mbps/2mbps connection for $45 a month as part of a calling package or $50 a month stand alone. Pricing for 30mbps/5mbps will be anounced later.

Data service packages include up to nine e-mail accounts with 30 mb of storage for the primary account and 10 mb for each sub-account, an address book and calender, 10 mb of personal web space, a web site building tool and access to news groups.

Verizon Admits It Plans To Sell Fiber
Access To Other ISPs
03/14/2005 05:27 PM
While Verizon has been threa tened to withhold fiber if the FCC forced them to share lines, that doesn't mean they're against selling those lines. Verizon has admitted (via Broadband Reports) that they're in discussions with various ISPs about offering them access to the lines. The article makes it sound like no one expected this to happen -- but that's not true. A lot of people expected them to have this option, but to price it at ridiculous rates that had little to do with the actual costs. The problem was never that Verizon didn't want to sell access to fiber lines -- just that they didn't want the government setting the price.

AMD Sempron 3100+: The best value

AMD Sempron 3100+: The best value
processor yet
09/13/2004 08:48 AM
SOMETIMES AMD pulls a lion out of the bag instead of the proverbial cat. The Sempron family could have been seen by most reviewers as a bunch of rebadged Thoroughbred CPUs destined at helping the channel getting rid of the last batch of Athlon XP processors. That's what in a nutshell, most of them are, from the Sempron 2300+ to the last Sempron 2800+. Basically, 333MHz Socket A Athlons with 256KB cache, in some cases. Actually, some online retailers are even rebadging on the fly, Barton Athlon XP processors to Sempron 3200+.

The Sempron 3100+ on the other hand is a brand new product and put some spice in the whole line. It is the first member of the Paris family, itself a derivative of the Newcastle family which include the first Athlon64 2800+. The three main notable differences between the Sempron 3100+ and the rest of the Athlon 64 family concerns the amount of L2 cache, 256KB instead of the usual 512KB or 1MB cache, the fact that it has a single channel DDR memory controller and a single hypertransport Link and the fact that it has no AMD64 capabilities but will include the NX bit and Cool'n'quiet features. The Sempron 3100+ is built using a 130nm SOI process, like most new AMD processors, and it has been positioned against the Intel Celeron family.
