Reuters - Persian is famed as the melodic, courtly language of medieval poets such as Omar Khayyam and Hafez, but it is a dictionary of vulgar street slang that is taking Iranian literary circles by storm. At Tehran's annual book fair, the woman running the stall of the dictionary's publisher Nashr-e Markaz had to explain to a disappointed stream of book buyers that the sixth edition had already sold out.

Book Written In Txt

Book Written In Txt 01/28/2004 03:38 PM
Last year there were a few stories about teacher s freaking out when their students were handing in papers written in "txt" shorthand. I imagine those same teachers won't be all that pleased to find out that someone has now come out with an entire book written in texting slang. The book (written in French SMS slang) is aimed at kids to try to get them to stop smoking - but I wonder if it will be used to get them to show their teachers a "legitimate" use of txt slang. Of course, my guess is that any book written by an adult, trying to use the shorthand that kids use and trying to get them not to smoke is only going to get mocked. However, not being a kid, not knowing French and not knowing "txt" speak, I'm not really in a position to judge the quality of the book. Still, if we thought English teachers were sticklers for students not using texting shorthand, I can't imagine how angry the French language keepers are going to be. The French, of course, are notorious for trying to micromanage their language to keep impurities out. These are the same folks who had to come up with their own French words for internet related terms, because they couldn't have their language pollute d by English.

In Case You're a Book Author

In Case You're a Book Author 10/30/2002 09:56 AM
In Case You're a Book Author or Thanks Lisa Mann! Although I'm not a huge O'Reilly fan at times, I have to say that O'Reilly definitely has wonderful, wonderful people in places. Lisa Mann from O'Reilly puts together an author's newsletter that lets authors know about speaking and writing engagements. This is how I found out about the David Coursey interview among other things. Here's a tidbit from the latest newsletter: When you have a speaking engagement, please remember to include the title of your book(s) in your bio. Event organizers will be thrilled to include it; it telegraphs your expert status better than almost any other sentence they can include. If the topic is related to the topic of your book, ask if you can distribute fliers for your book at your session or in the goodies bags. We may be able to arrange a special discount for attendees of events you speak at. (Please try to give us as much advance warning as possible if you'll need fliers or discounts.) Some authors have added the cover image of their book to the opening or closing slides that accompany their talk. Please also email pr@oreilly.com when you confirm a speaking engagement. We can sometimes help publicize your talk, or notify local press or press attending the event. Sure this advice definitely helps O'Reilly but it also helps the author as well. It's just plain good, smart marketing. While I did think to mention the blogging book in my PHPCon talks, it wasn't on the bio afaik and I could have done more. Thanks Lisa!

01/16/2004 11:35 AM
Steven Johnson, the guy who wrote the brilliant Emergence (a book whose lyrical description of emergent phenomena in ant-colonies inspired both my forthcoming novella Human Readable and the ants that crawl over Appeals Court, the sequel Charlie Stross and I wrote to Jury Service, which will be published as a fix-up novel by Argosy in just a couple weeks), has a new book out: Mind Wide Open: Your Brain And The Neuroscience Of Everyday Life, which he describes as:
...an attempt to look systematically at the question of what brain science can tell you about yourself as an individual. There are a number of great books that ask questions like: How did the brain evolve? Or: how does the brain work? This book asks a related, but more intimate question: how does your brain work? In what ways can science shed light on your own personality traits, emotional habits, mental blindspots or strengths? In the book I've set myself up as a kind of guinea pig for this experiment: I take a number of tests that evaluate different cognitive faculties; I do a number of explorations with neurofeedback; I help design a series of fMRI experiments on my own head. I also have conversations with some of the world's leading brain scientists, who function as guides through this amazing inner landscape.

Compensation
12/11/2003 02:31 PM
Back in June, we wrote about a UK company that had run out of money, and their advisors from PriceWaterhouseCoopers had decided that the most cost efficient way of letting the staff know was to send them all a text message on their phones telling them they had been fired and wouldn't be paid any money owed to them. Apparently, soon after that, the former head of the company was seen "sunning himself at his luxury villa in Spain." How nice. A small group of the fired employees have taken their claims against the company to an employment tribunal and won compensation, as the panel found that the staff had been "cynically manipulated". Of course, now, all the other employees are likely to file cases as well.

We've all heard the stories of break ing news being spread around by SMS text messages, as many people now look to SMS as their preferred way to communicate. However, since it usually costs money on a per messages basis, would a mobile operator ever stoop so low as to start a rumor campaign by text message, just to boost their own profits? That appears to be the accusation some are making according to an article found at textuall y.org about an investigation into a fake rumor that went around by text message concerning a potential earthquake in the Philippines.

New Python Computer Science text book

New Python Computer Science text book 12/12/2003 08:57 PM

Python Programming: An Introduction to Computer Science is a new Computer Science text book designed for use in introduction to programming classes, written by John Zelle, who's Teaching with Python page . Kirby Urner recently posted a mostly positive review of the book to the Python Edu-SIG mailing list, which sparked an interesting discussion about Python's place in the CS curriculum.

Unsurprisingly, the one thing that isn't disputed on the Python Edu-SIG list is that Python is a superb first language for CS students. As I've mentioned before, I'm convinced that the reason so many of my fellow students seem to actively dislike programming is that they're introduction to it was via Java, a language that enforces a mentality of battling the compiler more than one of straight problem solving. Hopefully now that text books are beginning to appear Python will be considered more seriously by computer science departments around the world.
