Control Computers With Body Language

Control Computers With Body Language 06/28/2004 02:37 PM
We've seen keyless keyboards that record finger motions to detect keystrokes. No reason to stop with finger motions, so the next step is full -body gesture detection. As one would expect, this kind of interface is showing up for vi deo games at first, but interestingly, there's also software that lets TV weather forecasters control "blue-screen" maps and weather displays with gestures. Maybe if gesture interfaces really catch on, we'll all be using IT sign language. But given that mouse gestures haven't even caught on, gesture interfaces really have to overcome the significant hurdle of either creating a set of standardized gestures or being easy enough to use that no standard gestures are needed.

Body language and facial expressions in
MMOs
07/20/2004 04:44 AM
Good piece on Mindjack on the rise of body-language cues in Massively Multiplayer online games with emphasis on Second Life's toolkit:
"V-Chat," launched in 1995, was an early contender in the ballooning collection of larger-scope chat spaces that encompassed both 2D and 3D graphics. V-Chat's avatars, although primitive, were both customizable and capable of expressing a range of emotional states. Microsoft's 2D "Comic Chat" built upon the facial expressions Microsoft had tested with V-Chat. Comic Chat displayed text in speech or thought bubbles, allowing users to express not only their public, but "private" thoughts; AI-detection of user-typed acronyms would cause one of the illustrated avatars to assume an appropriate pose, such as waving if the user had typed "BRB" for "be right back." While both the 2D Comic Chat and 3D V-Chat gave users more expressive outlets, it was ultimately 3D space that would offer the greatest potential for interpersonal dynamics. After analyzing logs from V-Chat sessions, Microsoft Research found that "Overall, V-Chat users appear to be using the 3D features of the program to reproduce the social conventions of physical proxemics."2 The opening up of chat to 3D space allowed users to communicate nonverbally simply by establishing location and facing relative to other participants.

US$7 billion. No, that's not the figure EA is willing to spend in order to buy every remaining independent development house. Rather, it's the total spent on videogames last year. Action titles led the charge on consoles, while PC gamers snapped up strategy games over all other genres.

Along with the sales figures, Game.Ars looks at yet another new MMORPG (we need a new one?), the prospects of the first boxing title for the PC in... a long time to be released in the US, along with all the other top gaming news from the week just gone by.

Skinplex is a new commercial technology that uses the human body as a conductor of data. According to an article in EE Times, the developers, German start-up Ident Technoogy AG, hope to compete with RFID, Bluetooth, and Near Field Communications (NFC) for some applications:
Skinplex technology could be used between an identifier worn on the user's body and a receiver integrated into a car, for example. A distinct code is transmitted through touch, the receiver recognizes its dedicated, authorized sender, and the car door is opened, for example.
This reminds me of the Personal Area Network research at MIT's Media Lab in the mid-1990s. Neil Gershenfeld and Thomas Zimmerman demonstrated a system where two people could trade electronic business cards by shaking hands. Link (via Carlo Longino at TheFeature)

Body types

Body types 08/16/2004 08:19 PM

Back when I used to compete in some bike events as a teen, I remember that the sport tended to favor shorter than average men, and even at the local level, the majority of top guys fell into a pretty small range of body size and type. At the state and national level, the distribution was even smaller, with almost every competitor being about 5' 6".

It's kind of fun to watch the olympics and notice that on a global stage, the distributions seem to fall the same way, with each sport favoring a certain body type and seemingly 90% or more of the contestants looking just about the same. The women's beach volleyball is where it seems most obvious. You see tall, thin, tan women that look as if they all just stepped off a beach in Southern California. Then you see that they're from China, or Japan, or Switzerland, as well as the US. Men's and Women's gymnastics, swimming, and diving all seem to favor a pretty narrow body type as well. Anyone that's ever watched college women's softball knows there's a body type for that sport as well, and it's also easy to see the teams around the world fall into it.

Every sport favors genetics to some extent, but I've always discounted them and held that anyone of any shape could rise towards the top if they trained hard enough. But at the absolute upper reaches of a sport, falling outside the norm becomes a liability and when the margin of error grows thin, you're going to fall behind the best.

I've always been an idealist that believed anyone could become president of the US, a pro baseball player, or the next Bill Gates, but when it comes to global competitve sports, it seems like winning the genetic lottery is almost always required if you really want to be the absolute best.

The <BODY> Politic 01/07/2004 04:40 PM

The Internet has factored into politics more this year than ever before, with Democratic presidential candidates like Howard Dean and Wesley Clark relying on it for most of their support.

But what if a candidate came along that took the Internet further than just raising support? What if a candidate was willing to turn his voting powers over to his constituents via the web?

Bath and Body Works

Bath and Body Works 10/29/2003 01:15 AM
The Bath and Body Works site is worthless. I was trying to find out if they had a shea butter lotion as a gift for my girlfriend Karen to replace the stuff she's running out of. On the home page, my navigation choices are "Home", "The Solution Center", whatever that means, "New This Season", which is obviously wrong, "FAQ", "Locator", and some sign-me-up-for-spam thing. All use tiny fonts done as graphics, so they can't be resized. I want a "Products" link! How about a "Our Stuff" link if that's not hip enough? It stays just as bad. They have three columns. The middle column has a big picture and a list of products under it. This layout implies you can look at individual products, but you can't. There's no site map, so I get the nagging feeling what I want is there, but I can't find it. My theory is that the package has changed but the scent is the same, but I can't know for sure. Eventually, through the random thrashing method, I find a shea butter page, but it says nothing about what scent it has. If I hate the scent, I won't want to keep smelling it. Finally, I gave up and went to the store. Sure enough, the same stuff is now in that blue bottle and it has the same scent....

If you’re using OS X, you’re using the Internet; and if you’re using the Internet, you’re looking for one thing: speed. For most people, dial-up just doesn’t cut it anymore, and for some, cable speeds still aren’t enough. While Safari and Camino have taken care of many gripes about page...

Penn State begins free music download

Penn State begins free music download
service for students
01/18/2004 02:46 PM

On January 12, the University of Pennsylvania began providing its on campus student body free access to Napster 2.0's subscription music service through a campus-wide contract with Napster. The contract allows students to listen to streaming audio or "tethered downloads" for free. (Tethered downloads are downloaded music files that will only play as long as the user maintains a subscription to Napster, or in this case, as long as the student remains at Penn State.) Alternately, students can pay 99¢ a track to burn songs to disk or transfer them to a mp3 player.

According to the Chronicle of Higher Education (subscription required) other schools are watching the experiment closely to see if the availability of free legal music downloads will reduce illegal file sharing on campus. As part of the contract, Napster has provided local caching servers for about 90 percent of the most requested songs which is expected to improve performance and reduce network congestion. According to Penn State Live , almost 3000 students (of 17,000 eligible students) registered for the service on the first day, streaming or downloading about 100,000 songs. No network congestion was reported.

Orrin Hatch wants to ban P2P networks that are used for music-sharing, claiming that their non-infringing uses are negligible. He even held hearings on his Induce bill to make the point. Video of those hearings are now available on a P2P system called Bittorrent that allows lots of people to simultaneously download large files by portioning out the burden of serving parts of the file to everyone who's trying to get a copy.

Download a copy of the hearings for yourself, participate in the democratic process, and in so doing, prove that their conclusions were utterly bogus. Torrent Link
