The Gloom Report

The Gloom Report 09/10/2004 01:09 PM

Christmas tree or ferry? You decide.

« A ferry bound for Tallinn looks more like a Christmas tree than a boat. »

The week lived up to my estimation of suck. HB had a visit with the vet this morning and, well, his days are numbered and few. It is somewhat bizarre when you start to discuss the process of putting a pet, a member of the family, a friend you've had for 13 years since he was a pup, 'to sleep'. I was relieved to know that the procedure shares much in common with the human kevorkian protocol as there are three stages instead of the vision I had of them going right for the injection in the arm which HB would be utterly traumatised over since the last time anyone got near his arm with a needle for a blood sample, he flinched and it took 2 weeks of daily visits and cookies to get him to allow the same again. So, I'm in a bit of a darker mood than I was at the beginning of the week and haven't been answering my email much either.

And, aside from the gloom report, there's a cool photo exhibit and camera sale over at my favourite Leica shop on Uudenmaankatu, EP-Kamera. Ukko Heikkinen's lovely photos taken around Helsinki with a Lubitel 166 camera are on display M[12-18]-Th[11-17] and EP is and has been selling a stock of Russian cameras, mostly FEDs as I recall, for 25 euro per kilo, yes you read that correctly, kilo. I don't need any more cameras so someone should go buy them all soon before I do something rash.

More Doom & Gloom Predictions For Number
Portability
11/13/2003 12:28 PM
It seems like November 24th, 2003 is increasingly taking on a Y2K feel, as story after story after story is talking about how much of a mess it's going to be when people first try to switch their mobile phone numbers. It's tough to tell how much of these stories are carrier propaganda, from those who are trying to scare people away from switching, and how much is legitimate. Even if the fear is legitimate, it's still possible that many of the problems aren't necessary, but are caused by certain carriers who are purposely making the process annoying, in order to scare away people from switching. No matter what, everyone's gearing up for November 24th. Large call centers are being trained to deal with number portability issues, and basically no one has any idea (a) how many people are actually going to switch on that first day or (b) how well the process will work? At least no one is heading off for reinforced bunkers in the mountains.

Ed Yourdon Back In The Doom And Gloom
Business

Ed Yourdon Back In The Doom And Gloom
Business
10/30/2003 11:46 PM
Ed Yourdon made quite a name for himself in the late 90s predicting that the Y2K problem was going to bring about the end of society. He sold a ton of books and videos based on his fear mongering statements that the lights would turn out at midnight on January 1st, 2000. After that didn't happen, he seemed to lay low for a bit, but now he's back predicting that American jobs are being lost forever overseas. Now, there's quite a valid debate over offshoring issues, but seeing Yourdon's track record of raising a big stink to sell lots of books about a problem that didn't pan out, I'd take it with a pretty large grain of salt. He seems to like to take a simple case and extrapolate it out, without considering how other issues may impact what actually happens. Yes, there are issues that the US needs to deal with concerning outsourcing, but the doom and gloom scenarios are counterproductive. Already there are signs that things like the famed Indian call centers aren't as great as they were made out to be and additional evidence suggesting that offshor ing creates additional costs for companies. Certainly, this is an issue that companies need to be aware of, but we have to look at the issue in context, and not just assume that because a job offshore is cheaper it really means that all US jobs are gone.

Since I've been using the Powerbook (which I still need to replace with a newer one now that the "speed bump" is official), I've drastically changed my e-mail habits (personal mail, not work mail). In doing so, I wonder if I'm unusual in this respect. Previously, I was using mutt for e-mail on my IBM Thinkpad running Linux. If you've not tried it, mutt is really the king of all console-based mail programs. It excels at making it very easy...

FCC screws America, adopts Broadcast
Flag, doom, gloom, armageddon
11/04/2003 07:12 PM
We've lost a round in the Broadcast Flag fight. The FCC today decided that it didn't need to listen to the tens of thousands of Americans that wrote to it, asking to have this terrible proposal set aside, and instead adopted a rule proposed by billionaire movie studios whose biggest problem is figuring out how to spend the riches they made off the VCR after we saved their asses by telling them to get bent when they tried to get the Betamax banned the last time around.
"The FCC today has taken a step that will shape the future of television," said EFF Senior Intellectual Property Attorney Fred von Lohmann. "Sadly, this represents a step in the wrong direction, a step that will undermine innovation, fair use, and competition."

"The broadcast flag rule forces manufacturers to remove useful recording features from television products you can buy today," said EFF Staff Technologist Seth Schoen. "The FCC has decided that the way to get Americans to adopt digital DTV is to make it cost more and do less."
