Some of the mid-level attacks
include:
GADC's demonic Mac Scripting: "Make a Shutdown script and save
it as an applet with a name that in no way implies its true nature.
Then set it up to run on startup or on login. Now whenever the victim
starts up or logs into the computer, it'll shut down. This one is
killer for obvious reasons."
Tim's Birthday Chair:
Disassemble a musical birthday card and carefully tape it
underneath a coworkers chair so that when the chair is leaned back,
the card activates. It took more than four hours for one coworker to
discover the source of the intermittent noise!
And Brendan's Word hack:
Subtle in execution, but so hot when it yields results.
Change the AutoCorrect on a coworker's Word settings such that when he
types in, say "facilitate," it gets auto-corrected to "faliatiate".
Don't have the patience to wait for him to type facilitate? Change
"the" to "teet", and so on.
And the Silver Medal goes to Anthony and his ’84 Westfalia
van cubicle mod. The van cost $400, but the joy it gives is
priceless.
Office Pranks - Bronze Medal Finalists
Office Pranks - Bronze Medal Finalists
06/17/2005 06:13 PM
Well, I received quite
a few pranks these past few days. Some good ones, some bad
ones—mice in the blender? Come on Emeril!—and here's the
best of the worst. The Bronze Medalists dealt almost exclusively with
computerized mayhem, which is kind of a cop-out. But you're all
special in your own ways.
The most basic prank came to us from just about everyone. It's
good and important, don't get me wrong, but it's been played.
Essentially, you take a screenshot of someone's desktop and make that
the wallpaper. Hee hee.
Brendan Colby writes:
We took a co-worker's monitor power cable and ran it
through the wall into a separate power strip/surge protector so we
could turn his monitor on/off at our leisure.
Rubin sent us an entire list of possible pranks including, but not
limited to:
Taping up the microphone of someone's phone, causing
them to speak louder.
Put a piece of clear tape on the glass of the photocopier. This is
fun, but it has a second part to it. If the sheer frustration of
someone having to make 100 copies all over again isn't enough, you
could try making 100 copies of the piece of tape, and then load the
paper into the paper feed. Funny to see people go crazy trying to
figure out why the copy is coming up with this square on every
page.
Post a For Sale on the lunchroom posterboard with your co-workers
extension, offering to sell "One size adult XL outfit of baby
clothing, including pacifier, bottle, bib and diaper."
James suggested using BoinkMail which allows you to send embarrassing things to your coworkers. Or
just send embarrassing things to your co-workers.
And the winner of the Bronze Medal is the big, pink office created
by Dan. The performance and planning were quite ambitious, though the
ultimate delivery could have been improved by a hit of Hello Kitty.
Stay tuned for the Silver and Gold medalists later today.

03/13/2003 10:22 AM
Although the crowds seem smaller, or maybe there are just so many
film people around, SXSW is fun this year. My panel went ok today, and
I'm looking forward to relaxing the rest of my time here.
One thing has really been driven home by the availability and
ubiquity of hacking tools: the downside of wireless is (un)security.
I've been saying this since last year's E-Tech conference, but as long
as Apple is pimping their airports and the wonders of wireless they
really should have an "iSecure" app that makes ssh
tunneling painless and easy. A few months ago I spent an entire
saturday afternoon writing scripts to auto-login to my email server
through a tunnel, and that was just email. Secure web browsing is
something else entirely, and the services of things like anonymizer look
attractive as a total package (but they're still a pain in the
ass to setup).
Ideally, it should be entirely transparent, painless, and easy to
setup and use a secure tunnel. Apple could even tie a service into
their iTools accounts. I'd be happy to pay $50 a year for encrypted
email and web traffic (with an easy interface to establish the
connection).

SXSW 2005 adventures
03/19/2005 02:37 AM
I'm on the plane back to NYC from what was my fifth SXSW. I hadn't been for a
couple of years and it was good (and a little weird) to be back. Some
thoughts, in rough chronological order:
Best panels I attended: tie between Jason Fried's
How to Make Big Things Happen with Small Teams and Malcolm
Gladwell's keynote. Having read Blink and seen him speak on it twice before, there was nothing
much new in Malcolm's talk, but he's a fantastic speaker...knows his
shit cold, didn't utter a single "um" or "like", could make the phone
book seem interesting, but doesn't have to caper about the stage to be
compelling.
Everyone was nice. Well, there was that one guy who was an asshole,
but I think everyone pretty much ignored him. But everyone else, so
nice to get to meet you or see you again.
Overheard in the hallway: "no woman who knows that much about CSS
should be that good looking", "here's how I met Marc Canter for the
first time: I'm standing outside at a conference, he comes up beside
me and farts", "I have no idea who you are", "surf the glue", "no one
will get naked in the hot tub with me", and "Ima
gine Malcolm Gladwell...with breasts. That's how busy it will
be."
My two panels sandwiched the keynote conversation between Bruce
Sterling and Alex Steffen, so I was only able to catch about 20
minutes of it. But that was long enough to hear Bruce talking about
smoking his shoes. LOL for reals.
BBQ! BBQ! In what could be a record for a bunch of
folks who can't pay attention to any particular thing for more than 10
minutes at a time, fifteen of us waited an hour and a half for a table
at Stubb's (cool menu
pictured at right). I can't speak for the rest, but my beef brisket
was worth the wait. As a bonus, Kathryn accidentally walked away with
the primary object of our obsession during our 90 minute wait, the
buzzing/blinking table-readiness notification coaster. I'm sure said
coaster will be a treasured guest at many SXSWs to come.
Bruce Sterling's not-house party didn't really get crackin' until
the geeks descended on the Zoob toys. The
photo evidence
pretty much speaks for itself here.
Ben Brown, because he asked
me to. Many, many times. Ben, I expect you to comply with the terms of
the restraining order from this point forward.
And finally, I'm at the airport ready to leave just after getting
through security and I hear, "your attention please, Jason Kottke to
security check 3 for a lost item pickup". Bag, check; rollie, check;
coat, check; phone and wallet, safely stowed in the zipper pocket of
my bag. What the heck could they have found and how on earth do they
know it's mine? I zipped over the security check point and was waved
over by a friendly/stern police officer. "You Jason?" "Yep." He holds
up my wallet, which I swear on a stack of The Origin of Species was in
my bag. "Holy crap," I said. "And that's not the worst part," he says
with the most serious look I've ever seen on anyone's face.
Uh oh, I feel a full body cavity search coming on.
He pulls out my social security card and lectures me for two
minutes on how I shouldn't be carrying it because it's all someone
needs to steal my identity. Relieved that I'm not about to be hauled
into a tiny windowless room for interrogation, I'm sort of chuckling
at this point, which he takes to mean I don't believe him about the SS
card. "Do you see me looking you right in the eye, son? That's how
serious I am about this." Mr. Sir, as soon as I'm home, I'm taking my
SS card out of my wallet and putting it in the safest place I
can...right after I change into some clean underwear.

A Running Robot Or A Rolling Robot?
A Running Robot Or A Rolling Robot?
12/18/2003 12:58 PM
It took years for researchers to figure out how to make a robot be
able to stand and walk on two legs. In fact, it's so complicated,
that some researchers are giving up on that idea and using
Segway balancing technology on their robots instead of legs.
However, the folks at Sony seem to have taken the concept of the
upright walking robot one step further: they've figured out how to make a
robot run. That's right, it actually leaves the ground at
points while jogging along. It apparently needs a bit of a walking
start to get up to speed, and even at running speed, it's more of a
slow jog - where it's feet barely leave the ground. Still, it's a
start, and with some more work, they believe they can really make the
robot run.

different joints are powered by a single motor, and there is even
software to pre-script the movements on your computer and play them
back again and again. Probably a little out of most casual robotics

and uses digital cameras to read the spines. The toughest challenge is
engineering a grasper with "fingernails" to pull out the book,

"It is mimicking the way we manipulate our hands. We have
constant feedback from tactile sensors, so it is moving very slowly.
In the first experiments, the books really got damaged because it was

pounds of ammunition, food, and equipment. The long term challenge is
making a four legged robot that can move as fast and quietly as a man
over any
terrain. The immediate challenge is making a four legged robot big
enough for the job that doesn't fall over and doesn't need an internal
combustion engine for power. For more, see Noah Shachtman's

Several readers alerted us to Roland
Piquepaille's latest weblog entry
about a robot equipped with a device that allows it to take
fingerprints
from suspicious packages that would normally have to be destroyed by
bomb disposal teams. Photos and a detailed description of the new
device, known as the "Robot
Accessory for Fuming Fingerprint Evidence" or RAFFE, can be found in
a paper
(PDF format) presented in the March 2004 of the Journal of Forensic
Sciences.
