Smarter Than the CEO
Smarter Than the CEO
05/31/2004 05:26 AMSuccess, most corporations assume, depends on the efforts of a few
superlative individuals. As a result, they treat their CEOs as
superheroes. In doing so, firms are neglecting their most valuable
resource: the collective intelligence of the organization as a whole.
By James Surowiecki from Wired magazine.
Smarter Than Me
Smarter Than Me
12/29/2003 11:44 PMSometimes I'm accused of being "smart," which bothers me since I don't
know what it means. It's a comparative label: if this one is smart,
then others are equally smart, smarter, or less smart. Yet all
generalizations are false, all comparisons fail. There's no way to
measure these things, not really. It's a bogus idea.
That's not exactly right. I quickly identify folks smarter than me,
but it's not empirical, just a cocktail party chat I have with myself.
Probably...

06/24/2004 05:04 AMRoss notes that Newsgator got funded recently. There I noticed a
trackback from rtwodtwo's posting: I never thought RSS programs would
get VC’s cash. What do they think their exit will be? What
revenue will this software have? Selling it to the warez loving
public? Looking at its download.com count (<2000 downloads) the VC
decision to invest looks very very strange. Well, I'm not sure what
download.com has to do with this. RSS software isn't at the point yet
where...

Investments and perceptions
Investments and perceptions
08/27/2004 01:41 PMWhen I look up Technorati on Technorati today, the top
results (e.g. Michael
Fioritto, paid
Content, Om Malik,
and John
Battelle) carry news that we've received venture funding. Some of
you may wonder why we generally don't bother talking about investment
stuff. Isn't it news, after all?
Making a big deal about VC investments is unnecessary, it seems to
me. One of the biggest reasons for the dot-com crash was an imbalance
of attention: far too much on investments, and far too little on
building real businesses with those investments. In a sane and sober
business environment, the proper ratio should be completely
customer-focused.
In our case, we're putting our investments to work building
infrastructure and providing service to a population that's growing at
an explosive rate. Frankly, we'd rather talk about that than about the
money others have invested in us. Right now our staff is just thirteen
people, all sprinting a marathon. As you probably know, our struggles
have been no secret. My last two posts
were about those problems and what we've done to get past them. We'll
have more problems, I'm sure. (Esther Dyson
says "Always make new mistakes.") But I also think we've
made good progress, especially considering the steepness of the hill
we've chosen to climb.
Perception is often a trailing indicator. That's how I regard
remarks like Michael Fioritto's "Maybe now the site will start
working, for a change..." That change came several weeks ago.
Technorati's performance is far from ideal; but it is improving.
Please keep banging on it and let us know how we're doing
and what we can do better. That's the kind of investment that helps
the most.

spambots get smarter
spambots get smarter
01/06/2004 01:03 PMSince today started as a "spam kind of day"...
Something I noticed over the last few weeks is that I've started to
receive spam that is way more targeted than before. In what sense?
Well, let's say this: I'm getting spam that not only knows my full
name, but also my address. Okay, not my current address, but
I've already gotten spam that explictly mentions both my New York
address (from 5+ years ago) and my SF Bay address (from 2+ years ago).
This is bad, not only they know my email address, but they also know
where I live(d)! Yes, we know that with time and money you can get a
lot of information on anyone, but this has to be done automatically
and massively, or otherwise it wouldn't be a practical option for
spammers.
Clearly, one way this could happen is if someone (say, buy.com) has
been selling their customer information. Since I usually take care of
buying online only when my privacy is more or less protected, this is
unlikely, though certainly possible.
There's a more likely way in which this connection was made:
Google.
Google not only knows the web, it also knows other information...
like phone numbers (at least in the US). Jon mentioned this some time ago.
A spambot to get "connected information" would work like this. Say
you write an automated script to go through phone numbers on Google.
Then the script takes the address data and the person's name, and then
googles the person's name. It takes the first few results (or
maybe only the first one) and scans the resulting pages to match an
email's name to the person's name. Sure, this won't be 100% correct,
but spammers don't care about that. And Google's reach makes it
reasonable to think that you'd have a reasonably high hit rate. You
could even write a program that uses the GoogleAPI for it.
Sure, we could say, as Scott McNealy does, that "you're privacy is
gone, get over it". Even if you don't agree with that statement (and I
don't, at least I want to resist it!), this is nevertheless
disturbing. And the question that follows is: does Google have any
responsibility for this? They'd probably say that they're providing a
service by integrating yellow pages information, which would be true.
I'm not picking on Google, rather Google is the example here
because of its reach and pervasiveness, but I'm sure that similar
things can be done with other search engines and if not it won't be
long before you can. Can we fix this at all? If so, how?
Since this is the tip of the iceberg, my main thought at the moment
is that I'm a character from Lost in Space and all I hear is
"Danger Will Robinson! Danger!".

Tinderbox Keeps Getting Smarter
Tinderbox Keeps Getting Smarter
03/22/2005 04:58 PMMatt Neuburg (~210 words)
Tinderbox Keeps Getting
Smarter -- Eastgate Systems' Tinderbox has been upgraded to
version 2.4. Tinderbox (see my review in TidBITS-651
A>) is a superb way to create heavily hyperlinked text; text snippets
are stored in a hierarchical structure and can be exported as Web
pages. I used Tinderbox to create the online help for the Perl editor
Affrus, which blogger John Gruber has called "the finest software
documentation," in part because it is "cross-linked out the
ying-yang." Tinderbox 2.4 makes outlines smarter by permitting
any entry to have a rule for updating itself periodically; for
example, if you're using Tinderbox to maintain a to-do list, a parent
item (representing a category or group of tasks) might have a rule
that its "completed" attribute should be true if and only if
the "completed" attribute of all its children (the actual
tasks) is true. There are also many small bug fixes and aesthetic
tweaks, and Tinderbox's Web-page export continues to evolve strongly.
Tinderbox runs in both the classic Mac OS (Mac OS 9.2 recommended) and
Mac OS X 10.0 and later. Tinderbox costs $165, plus $70 annually for
free updates. A demo version is available for download. [MAN]

VCs Distancing Themselves From Spyware
Investments
06/17/2005 03:33 PMA year ago, we were surprised that VCs would bother
invest
ing in spyware/adware companies when they were so universally
hated -- which seemed like it would come back to bite them pretty
badly. There were even VCs who went through
convol
uted arguments trying to define "good" and "bad" spyware companies
to figure out who to invest in. In the past six months or so,
something changed. Suddenly, the place to be investing was
an
ti-spyware companies, which meant that VCs were basically
funding an industry based on wiping out an industry they had funded
last year. This even resulted in a few situations where VCs had
bets
on both sides of the battle. However, with the shift to backing
the anti-spyware side, something funny has happened. Almost no one
associated with the most famous name in spyware, Claria,
will admit to being involved with the company
any more. The folks at Silicon Beat heard a rumor that Microsoft
was trying to buy Claria -- a bizarre rumor, and one that was quickly
denied. However, all of the VCs they tried to reach claimed their
investments in Claria were a long time ago, and they had nothing to do
with the company any more. The same could be said for the investment
bankers who
once
tried to take the company public. It seems that all these folks
who got blinded by the dollars, have finally realized that a business
model based on tricking people and pissing them off probably isn't one
that's worth being involved in. Not only that, but they're
recognizing that it reflects very poorly on
them for thinking
it was a worthwhile investment in the first place.
