T-Online Buying AOL? 11/13/2003 01:36 PM
The Register is reporting that T-Online, the ISP part of Deutsche Telekom, is talking to Time Warner about buying AOL, though they also get a T-Online person to deny the rumor. Time Warner has repeatedly said that they have no plans to sell AOL, but there certainly are executives there who would love to see it go. Of course, a more likely discussion would be more informal discussions to see if T-Online would want to buy AOL's German (or European) operations, and not the whole thing. However, the article doesn't suggest that at all, and seems to indicate they're looking at the whole thing.

Free/open source software (F/OSS) is software for which the human-readable source code is made available to the user of the software, who can then modify the code in order to fit the software to the user’s needs. The source code is the set of written instructions that define a program in its original form, and when it’s made fully accessible programmers can read it, modify it, and redistribute it, thereby improving and adapting the software. In this manner the software evolves at a rate unmatched by traditional proprietary software.

For many years free/open source software has been building momentum. Beginning amidst the technical cultures that produced the Internet and World Wide Web, it is now causing quite a stir in the commercial world as large software corporations are finding themselves competing against commercially available open source software.
information. This new demand for free and open source software has piqued interest among scholars in disciplines ranging from sociology to economics to social psychology, and has raised questions in fields of application ranging from innovation processes to strategic management. He went to Oakland International Airport -- ticket in hand -- and was told he had to produce his ID if he wanted to travel. He asked to see the law demanding he show his 'papers' and was told after a time that the law was secret and no, he wouldn't be allowed to read it.

"Of course, one might note that bloggers would have been much more likely to publish a story based on the memos and publish all the memos simultaneously. There would be nothing left to return to Jones Day under the judge's order; it all would have been published on the internet. xorg-translucent.jpgX.Org is set to release a new version of their X11 server tomorrow (X11 is the system that drives the GUI desktop on Linux and other UNIX systems). The notable part of this release will be extensions to the X protocol that will allow more flexibility in the compositing of windows. This allows for drop shadows on windows, translucent windows, and other visual effects (The screenshot at right is a bit small, but it shows a video playing at 50% transparency with a browser behind). Linux-Gamers.Net has the full scoop:

Another useful feature is the inclusion of the new XDamage extension. Monitoring the regions affected by rendering has wide-spread use, from VNC-like systems scraping the screen to screen magnifying applications designed to aid users with limited visual acuity. The DAMAGE extension is designed to make such applications reasonably efficient in the face of server-client latency.

This all seems a bit technical, I know, but it will mean a more 'Mac-like' visual experience for Linux desktops, and more efficient rendering. The screenshots look great. Windows users, don't worry. I'm sure Longhorn will be along eventually. Right? =)

History of candy bar wrappers 03/14/2005 05:29 PM
Cory Doctorow: This Syracuse University thesis on the history of candy bar wrappers is a very breezy work for an academic paper -- insightful and interesting history of the evolution of an object whose ubiquity has rendered it invisible to our modern eyes. Interesting to think that there was a time when the idea of a candy bar wrapper was novel.
Candy wrappers are designed to communicate with consumers, - even though the communication may often be one-way. The bright colors, shiny paper and animated logos speak to our culture in the most friendly and trusting tones. We know that each wrapper holds the promise of something good - at least as good as Grandma used to make.

Just the opposite, in fact. For $184 you get a low-power computer running the Linux 2.6.0 kernel with webserver and remote login and power management circuity on-board. Throw a solar cell onto this little bad boy and you could do all sorts of fun things, like embedding a permanent webserver into a building, controlling a swarm of wireless robots, or developing the first Bluetooth-enabled loaf of bread. At just 8.3 by 3.6 centimeters, the 200ax-bt still manages to pack in USB, serial, sound, and LCD controller - now with AC adapter!
