how to implement a permission system in
a CMS ?
01/22/2003 06:39 PM
I'm currently coding (yet another) content management system with PHP/MySQL. As any modern CMS, mine got users. Now I need to implement the 'permissions' system. Basically it's a flag recorded in the database, allowing or not user 'x' to do action 'y' on the website. I can see every 'piece of information' in a CMS as an 'element'. That is, blogs of course, links, files, users, all is recorded in the same table with a 'type' attribute describing element type and allowing code to fetch and display correctly the element content.

eBay to implement a corporate bulletin

eBay to implement a corporate bulletin
board?
08/14/2004 04:42 AM
Founder of Craiglist, a company specializing in online bulletin boards, recently revealed in his blog that they are to have partnership with undoubtedly one of the most famous online auction site, eBay. Craiglist been involved in sites focusing on classified ads, finding and meeting new people and even discussion boards just like our very own, in over 45 cities.

Both the companies have mentioned that this will be more of an 'information exchange' partnership, where both the companies will share their learnings and benefit each other. An eBay spokesperson also made it clear that this won't be any sort of a tight partnership deal, but both the companies will be able to keep operating their particular business without interference.

"Their business model and ours are complementary," Durzy said. "The goal is for us to learn more about the classified business model, how it works and where it works.".

Initially that came to me as a strict denial to the fact that ebay won't be implementing Craiglist's skills on their property. However, seeing as how ebay could benefit from Craiglists' past experience with online communities and gain efficiency in sales, will Craiglist, who deals in more than just sales and purchases of goods, be able to gain as much by learning merely from a vast auction site? Especially in the case that they may not be implementing their system on ebay.

Pollo Campero

Pollo Campero 10/31/2003 10:35 AM
Long Wait for a Taste of Home: Guatemalan Fried Chicken Draws a Crowd. Pollo Campero's first US store in Los Angeles reached the unprecedented sales mark of $1 million in an astounding seven weeks, a daily average of $20.4 thousand. After a full weekend of operation in the Washington DC market, Pollo Campero broke this record by selling $65 thousand in two days, a daily average of $32.5 thousand. At the franchise in Herndon (Virginia), I have personally seen the line exit the store, cross the front of the building and circle around to the back (at 3pm). Is this fried chicken really that good?

A Chicken in Every Driveway (Los Angeles

08/06/2004 05:53 AM
Los Angeles Times - FITZGERALD, Ga. — At the end of the day in Fitzgerald, when shop owners hang up "closed" signs and the fierce heat fades a little, chickens come out of the shadows. They hop across Main Street, tail feathers arching delicately behind them. They scratch and scratch on lawns, with one ropy foot cocked in the air. Roosters, their wattles electric red, chase hens around azaleas.

Los Angeles (Day Two)

Los Angeles (Day Two) 02/10/2004 02:46 AM

A few weeks ago I had a conversation with Dan Hill about clothes. My contention - that everyone in the world should wear the same clothes because then we'd stop making spurious assertions about people's integrity and value on the basis of what bloody T-shirt they wore. My other contention - no adult human being needs any more than two pairs of shoes and those that claim otherwise are in some way mentally depraved.

This latter story - such as it is - is relevant for two reasons. Firstly because I tried to buy some clothes today and secondly because I tried to buy some shoes today. I was unsuccessful on both counts. The shoes that I needed to replace last year at ETCon are still firmly on my feet. And I have no new clothes of any sort. I do however have an enormous pile of stuff from the Apple Store and a desperate salivating urge to go back and blow another £200 on a new iPod. I only wish I could claim surprise at this turn of events...

The other great thing that happened today was that I got to have lunch with Christopher from filchyboy / chronotope / safer sex. We went to a little Mexican place where they fed us about five tons of food for about twenty pence and talked about familial relationships, children, expectations, socialising and meeting people through the internet. Altogether a very pleasant couple of hours that I look forward to repeating at some point in the future.

The only bad news (other than me cleaning out Apple of course) was that I was supposed to go with Kerry to the Viper Rooms this evening, but am too bloody tired to move out of my comfy chair. So - more likely - I shall instead mess around with Garageband for a couple of hours and then have an early night...

Care to answer a question for a city slicker? Why is it that about 10% of the "free range" eggs we buy have blood spots on their yolk? I thought a blood spot indicates that the egg is fertile. Are they letting the chickens run with roosters? Or is this a case of parth-henhouse-ogenesis?...

Don't call him chicken 07/10/2004 02:43 PM
Sunjit Kumar of Suva, Fiji, was raised by chickens. As a young boy, his grandfather locked him in a chicken coop where he lived for several years. After Kumar escaped, he was taken to an old age home where the baffled staff confined him for twenty years. Now though, Elizabeth Clayton, president of a Rotary Club in Fiji's capital city, has, er, taken Kumar under her wing.
"Sujit would mostly hop around like a chicken, peck at his food, perch like a chicken and make noises like a chicken," she said. "He would prefer to roost on the floor to go to sleep rather than sleep in a bed."
Kumar currently resides in a former factory while undergoing therapy. Video available here. More of the story here.

Ms. Jardin, Though you might be intereested in this tidbit. I got a phone call from International Communications Research (ICR) for a survey yesterday. Buried among the questions about credit counseling services, political affiliation, and consumption of coffee, tobacco, and fast food products, I got this series of questions.

"Do you have an Internet connection? Have you ever visited the website subservientchicken.com? Would you visit it again?"

These were followed up by questions about the BK Tendercrisp Sandwich and their low-carb menu. Looks like they're looking to evaluate the potency of their stealth marketing campaign.

Dixie Chicks Pulled from Air After Bashing Bush Dude, these Texas people didn't find criticism of the president unpatriotic when Bill Clinton was president. They thought it was a sacred duty...Apparently country stations in Texas and elsewhere are pulling Dixie Chicks albums because their lead singer, while on an overseas tour, criticized Bush, saying she was ashamed to be from the state as him. People who want to criticize the critics of the critical comments are supporting the Chicks by buying their albums and requesting their songs. I never thought I'd buy a Dixie Chicks album, but that's what I'm going to do tonight, and I'm paying full price!
