Yahoo To Fully Support Not Fully
Supporting Firefox
03/19/2005 03:17 AM
Yahoo started to win some extra fans yesterday afternoon by announcing they were going to fully support Firefox on all their web offerings. If true, this would be great, since an increasing number of hard core internet users now rely almost exclusively on Firefox, and there's nothing more annoying than websites and services that force you to go back to IE. However, Yahoo quickly backtracked and claimed that actually, when they said they would fully support Firefox they meant they wouldn't fully support Firefox, though it's a nice idea.

alltheweb goes standards compliant

alltheweb goes standards compliant 11/18/2002 12:58 PM
This seems to be happening a lot lately, another major player in the web world has gone standards compliant. Alltheweb is a popular search engine, and they have made their site XHTML and CSS compliant. They also allow you to totally customize the look and feel of the page through customizing the style sheet (as well as picking predefined ones). Gazingus has a Google bookmarklet that allows you to quickly and easily search Google. It will find highlighted text in the current page and search for that text, or upon not finding any highlighted text, will prompt you for a search term. I have modified that bookmarklet for Alltheweb, drag it into your favorites or do what you please with it: Search alltheweb

Released PHP 5 compliant MetaL engine 05/12/2004 01:25 AM
A new revision of the MetaL engine that is compliant with PHP 5 was released. Several classes that compose the different modules of the MetaL compiler engine were fixed to make object cloning work under PHP 5 in parts of the code where object copying was intentional. These fixes are important because they make all MetaL engine applications ready for use with PHP 5. These applications include Metastorage, a Data Access Object (DAO) classes generator tool.

Why standards-compliant HTML matters

Why standards-compliant HTML matters 02/01/2005 09:11 PM
High-quality, compact, elegant and standards-compliant code is one of the most obvious tools of good web development nowadays. However, it is sometimes difficult to convince the client to invest in that kind of quality. Here are some elements that can be used to build a case: outlining abuse patterns and their reasons, the fundamental problem with creative use of technologies, and its consequences.

Cory Doctorow: An enormous cloud of high-carb, life-giving frozen sugar has been discovered at the end of the Milky Way.
Molecules of a simple sugar, glycolaldehyde, were detected in a cloud of gas and dust called Sagittarius B2 about 26,000 light years away.

Observations indicated large quantities of the sugar frozen to a temperature only a few degrees above absolute zero, the point at which all molecular movement stops.

As Expected, FCC Says DSL Should Remain
Fully Clothed
03/25/2005 07:27 PM
As expect ed, the FCC ruled today that states can't force telcos to offer "naked DSL." While we had hoped that the FCC would do this as part of a more comprehensive national plan that would tell the Baby Bells to stop using their monopoly positions to force unwanted bundles on people, that's not what happened. Instead, the FCC admitted that looking into those issues was "an afterthought." While it does make sense that having 50 different state rules would be unnecessarily burdensome, you would think that the FCC would be concerned that all of the Baby Bells (minus Qwest) are basically holding up broadband deployment by forcing extra services on those who don't want them. Perhaps it's more of an issue for the FTC, rather than the FCC. What's even more disturbing, though, is that these telcos still don't seem to realize that the only thing they're doing is makin g cable modems look more attractive than DSL for anyone who doesn't want a local phone line, but would prefer a mobile phone or VoIP.

Beware of Fully Trusted Code

Beware of Fully Trusted Code 04/09/2004 03:57 PM
The vast majority of managed applications run with full trust, but based on my experience teaching .NET security to developers with a broad range of experience, most really don't understand the implications of fully trusted code. So I've pulled together a number of examples where fully trusted code can skirt around common language runtime (CLR) security features, starting each with a question that seems to have an obvious answer.

Fully Wi-Fi Enabled Grade School 11/18/2003 09:05 PM
While parents of some students in Illinois schools are concerned about potential health affects of Wi-Fi, one school in New York requires every kid to have a Wi-Fi-enabled laptop: Students use the laptops in every class and Columbia University is studying how the program works. I’ll be interested to see how laptops are eventually used throughout the school system. Teachers at this New York school rave about the additional skills they can teach kids because of the laptops but also note the added distractions in games and the Internet. It must be difficult to control how the computers are used during class....
