A security vulnerability exists in Microsoft Word that could allow malicious code execution. This vulnerability exists due to to the way Word checks the length of a data value (Macro names) embedded in a document. If a specially crafted document were to be opened it could overflow a data value in Word and allow arbitrary code to be executed. If successfully exploited, an attacker could then take the same actions as the user had permissions to carry out, such as adding, changing or deleting data or files, communicating with a web site or formatting the hard drive.

On Friday Microsoft released a patch for the flaws exploited by the recent Download.Ject attack. The patch is labeled a configuration change, and prevents an ActiveX component from writing to the system. While the flaws have been known for over 9 months, only recently have they been exploited. Microsoft plans to release no less than eight security patches, at least four of which are considered to be critical. The patches will include critical updates for Microsoft Office, MSN Messenger, and Exchange. The company also announced that beginning April 2005 it will change its Security Bulletin Advance Notification information provisioning to include information about Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool as well as any tools that would be related to upcoming security patches.
