Cops in North Miami Beach to Get Wi-Fi

Cops in North Miami Beach to Get Wi-Fi

Cops in North Miami Beach to Get Wi-Fi 01/27/2004 01:42 PM

The North Miami Beach Police Department is building a Wi-Fi network using Tropos gear: The police had used a CDPD network to access data but the operator is shutting down its CDPD network. The department expects to save a bundle by not having to pay an operator a monthly fee for using the network. The Wi-Fi network currently only covers a few square blocks but plans call for it to stretch five square miles. That's not a very big area so I wonder what the cops will do outside of that area....

On September 1st, the iPod Garage will be hosting the first-ever iPod Garage Party. And you're invited. What's more, if you bring your iPod with you, you'll get to hook your iPod up to the sound system and show us what you've got, for up to fifteen minutes. You don't have to be a professional DJ, just share with us the fifteen minutes of your music library that you cherish the most. iPod-related prizes will be given to those of you who can win over the audience the most effectively.

Xeni Jardin: If you're going to the Miami Music Festival, you may want to push aside the hookers and blow early on Friday morning to catch Lawrence Lessig's keynote at 11 am (Raleigh Hotel, poolside!) in South Beach. Remix culture seems to be a recurring thread throughout this year's edition of the annual event, and with the Grokster decision drawing near -- there will no doubt be heated debate along with the Florida heat. Link to details, and here's an interview conducted in advance of his keynote at last week's O'Reilly's ETECH: L ink (Thanks, M.C. Lyte)

Mr. Zillman will be showing these new resources live on the Internet and how they will relate to helping you search and find the information you require for both personal and academic research. His presentations are designed both for the “newbie” to Internet searching as well as the seasoned “Internaut”. The Internet continues to change at a record pace, and discovering the latest tools to make your Internet search both easy and competent is the goal of this presentation. Will eMail soon be replaced by RSS and news aggregators? Are blogs, currently the fastest growing area of the Internet, a fad or will they change the entire Internet landscape? No need to fly beyond Miami to visit

No need to fly beyond Miami to visit
Latin Americans
04/22/2004 05:37 PM

Greetings from beautiful Quito, Ecuador at an elevation of 9000'.  Quito has its advantages over the U.S., notably the ease of connecting to the Internet (cybercafe on every block) and the low prices (haircut and lunch in the nicest part of downtown for less than $10 total).  After a stopover in Miami, however, I'm not sure that one needs to leave the U.S. in order to visit Latin America.

In 24 hours in Miami, most of which was spent with my cousin Jennifer, I met people from Columbia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Venezuela, and probably a few more countries.  A trip onto the highways reveals the driving style of every Latin American country on display as every driver tends to follow the rules of whatever country he or she is from (sadly this results in an average of more than 10 serious accidents every day and a lot of snarled traffic).
