06/23/2004 11:52 PM
Somebody asked me today why Windows XP doesn't have something like Mac OS X's Keychain: a secure, systemwide store for names and passwords. And then I remembered, dimly, that it does -- sort of. When XP came out, all the feature lists mentioned Credential Manager, which uses the Windows Data Protection API (DPAPI) to do something that sounds just like what the OS X Keychain does. On XP, you get to the Credential Manager like so: Control Panel -> User Accounts -> Manage my Network Passwords. ...

Anime keychain drives

Anime keychain drives 07/22/2004 02:31 AM
Gizmodo has the scoop on a line of Gundam-branded USB keychain drives.
To appeal to the "maniacs" (Japanese for "someone who knows too much,") IO Data has included two features for collectors of the drives - and I'm not making this up - by installing the included "Cute" software, your desktop wallpaper will automatically change to a corresponding Gundam wallpaper. When you take it out, it will go back to normal. The second feature is the screensaver, which when you purchase and use more than one of these drives, will add the respective characters to the ensuing action. You too can engage in intergalactic space combat for about $55 USD for a USB 2.0 mecha, or $45 for a USB 1.1 mecha.

A shaky handshake

A shaky handshake 08/14/2004 09:49 AM
Earlier this week, Hewlett Packard pulled a surprise move that had investors — and perhaps Apple’s executives — heading for the hills when they dropped several bombshells on Wall Street: For one, its earnings were announced a week ahead of schedule and were peppered with disappointment. Citing "costly glitches with a new ordering processing system and softer-than-expected demand for its server and storage products," HP vowed to "change management in the enterprise server and storage systems division." However, there was a much more shining figure obscured under HP’s muck — the company nearly doubled its profits and saw a significant jump in personal computer sales over the same period a year ago. Of course, this is all good for Apple and its partnership with HP to create a consumer digital music player based on the iPod. But unfortunately, investors didn’t seem to notice, or care, and share’s tumbled accordingly. In fact, Hewlett Packard lost about $3, or approximately 15-percent, this week, even falling through Dell’s spirited numbers which gave the tech sector a much-need end-of-the–week boost. To top things off. HP also trimmed its next quarter outlook. How this will all affect Apple remains to be seen — especially since the device has yet to be released — but it hasn"t fared too well with partnerships this year. The Pepsi promotion yielded disappointing results; the iPod Your BMW campaign has produced less-than-favorable reviews; and IBM’s production woes have hindered any real advancement of the G5 line. While the HP union seemed like a slam dunk from the start, if HP can"t get its act together, all will be for naught. Investors are going to need to see growth from both companies to latch on to the idea, and if they don"t, there’s not going to be much incentive for Apple to outsource another technology. It may just be bad timing, but HP"s woes could spell another Apple partnership disaster.

Who Has The Secret Handshake To Get In
On The Google IPO?

Who Has The Secret Handshake To Get In
On The Google IPO?
08/11/2004 06:59 PM
Last week we noted that almost all of the underwriters supposedly offering shares in the Google IPO had set up large (around $50,000) hurdles for the "average investor" Google was supposedly targeting. That article, though, noted that Ameritrade and E-Trade didn't have those hurdles. Or, maybe they do. A reporter who signed up for an Ameritrade account to invest in Google was rejected by Ameritrade for no clear reason. He answered a bunch of questions truthfully, and about the only one that seems likely to have set off some alarm bells was his net worth. Still, it wasn't in the lowest bracket, and it certainly sounds like this guy could afford $500 on a few shares -- and he made it clear he knew what he was doing. Ameritrade, though, like all the other brokers refuses to explain how they pick who is eligible and who isn't. It makes sense to set up some eligibility barriers to avoid some speculators, but it's increasingly looking like Google's IPO for the average investor isn't really for the average investor at all.

299_rgb.jpg imageThe semiconducter industry is taking it in the crotch when it comes to cellphones, continually racing to cram more and more features into handsets that oftentimes don't sell for as much as they cost to make -- at least according to the EE Times, but hey, they would know, right? Still, there seems to be a little sky-is-fallingism in the article, because while the coming convergence of portable devices (MP3 players, phones, cameras, PDAS, etc.) may cause fewer items to sell (with fewer profit margins), it should continue to push the need for more and more semiconducters and flash memory products as people continue to upgrade to newer, more converged devices.

The gadgets may change, but the lust for new gadgets seems to stay the same. Then again, I'm an idiot, so weigh those two things together.
