Help send Chris Allbritton to Iraq

Help send Chris Allbritton to Iraq 03/14/2003 01:03 PM
Christopher Allbritton, author of Back to Iraq 2, is a young independent journalist who has already done some fine reporting from Iraq. He is trying to raise funds to head back to Iraq to do some more reporting. He is capable of some pretty good writing, as the following excerpt shows: [Predicts] When it’s over and the dust has settled, the United States will stand supreme in the world, powerful but hated, its boot on the throat of Iraq. The international frameworks built over the last 50 years, including the United Nations, will lie in ruins or will be about to collapse. Resentful young men, hearts full of fear, hate and Allah will find refuge and a raison d’etre as explosive martyrs. The world will be less safe — for everyone. I really hope he is wrong, but fear he is not. Anyway, check his stuff out, and if you have some cash to spare, send a few bucks his way....

Iraq: The Real Election

Iraq: The Real Election 04/17/2005 11:39 PM
If the election was to mark the point from which Iraqis would settle their differences through politics and not through violence, it failed; for those responsible for the insurgency— not only those planting suicide bombs but those running the organizations responsible for them and the leaders of the community that has shown itself sympathetic enough to the insurgents' cause to shelter them—did not take part. The political burden of the elections was to bring those who felt frightened or alienated by the new dispensation into the political process, so they could express their opposition through politics and not through violence; the task, that is, was to attract Sunnis to the polls and thereby to isolate the extremists. And in this, partly because of an electoral system that the Sunnis felt, with some reason, was unfairly stacked against them, the election failed.
