HP has expanded its line of digital music players to include Apple's IPod Mini. The company said that the miniature player will be available from its Web site beginning Sunday, with the Apple IPod Mini from HP hitting major retailers shortly thereafter. HP's prices will be the same--$200 for a 4GB model, and $250 for a 6GB model.

HP's enormous retail distribution channel and emphasis on appealing to Windows-centric users may give the IPod Mini further penetration into the mass market. HP and Apple first announced a partnership more than a year ago, to bring IPods to HP's customers and make the devices available through HP's considerable retail distribution channels. HP also includes Apple's ITunes software pre-installed on all its PCs.

As eagle-eyed reader Thomas Shebest pointed out to me, it looks as if Apple has removed the Mini (car) from its BMWYourIpod page. Either the Mini isn't supported any longer, or, more likely, someone within BMW's marketing department didn't want to dillute the Beemer brand with their low-end cousin. Whichever -- it's still been removed from the site.

Digital Lifestyle Outfitters (DLO) announced iBoom, a four-speaker boombox system featuring 20 watts per channel, a built-in digital FM radio and a dock that accepts an iPod or iPod mini. It also features a built-in handle, an auxiliary input jack and the option to receive power through the included AC adapter, which also charges the iPod, or six D cell batteries. The transmitter broadcasts your music on any FM frequency on your car stereo, with a backlit display that shows which frequency is in use, while the charger keeps your iPod's battery at full capacity. The RoadTrip plugs into any 12-volt outlet or cigarette lighter in your car and its transmitter unit can be removed and plugged into a USB port on your computer, enabling music broadcast from it to any nearby FM stereo. Griffin has left the top of the US$79.99 device open for use with other iPod accessories, which means RoadTrip isn't compatible with the 1G and 2G iPods that have FireWire ports on top.

Tokyo-based Tunewear on Wednesday announced four new accessories for use with the iPod or iPod mini: Prie Hook cases, Poptune removable wrappers, Waterwear water-resistant cases and aluminum clips for the company's Icewear mini cases. Prie Hook, which will ship in mid-January for US$54, features a large metal hook that you can use to attach the leather case to a belt loop or other spot. A flap at the bottom opens for charging the MP3 player in a dock; slots at the top and bottom allow access to all the ports. It's available in two models, one that fits all 4G iPods -- including the iPod photo -- and one that fits the iPod mini; the hook on the latter doesn't swivel 360 degrees, however.

SendStation Systems and RadTech have released two new PocketDock models and MiniSleevz for iPod mini, respectively. SendStation's PocketDock is an adapter that allows users to connect their iPods to their Macs with standard FireWire cables instead of Apple's docking cables. The company's new PocketDock Combo (US$22.95) contains USB and FireWire ports that accept standard USB cables as well as 6-pin FireWire cables. The PocketDo ck Line Out ($29.95) also features a 6-pin FireWire port but adds a 3.5mm (1/8-inch) stereo jack that bypasses the iPod's headphones amplifier for better sound quality when connecting the MP3 player to external speakers. It comes with two six-foot white audio cables. Both PocketDock models are available now and are compatible with Apple's 10, 15, 20, 30 and 40GB iPods, as well as the iPod mini.

Looks like Griffin Technology has released a version of the iTrip specifically for the iPod mini which they're calling, unsurprisingly, the 'iTrip mini.' The iTrip is an FM transmitter for the iPod which lets you broadcast to pretty much any FM station you want via a sometimes kludgey 'frequencies as songs' interface. No matching colors, though, as the iTrip mini will only come in white, topping your mini like a stick of deodorant. Still, I have an iTrip for my iPod, and besides the aforementioned interface weirdness, it definitely gets the job done. Griffin is taking pre-orders now for $40 and expects to ship in July.

The US$39.99 device attaches to the top of the iPod mini and enables users to play their music through nearby FM receivers in cars, homes and elsewhere. The iTrip mini can broadcast on any available frequency, and is tuned from the iPod mini itself. It uses no batteries, drawing power from the iPod mini, and powers itself off automatically when not in use. When Griffin first announced the iTrip mini they said it would ship in July, so this news comes a month earlier than expected.

Good news for everyone that pre-ordered an iTrip mini, the FM transmitter from Griffin Technology that is designed specifically to work with the iPod mini -- it's shipping a month early. How often does that happen? Well, I mean, I guess there was that time when the solids residue from that batch of 5,6-MeO-MIPT recrystallized faster than we expected from the EtOAc/hexane, but I guess, yeah, that was sort of a different trip altogether.

Four admirable spectrum licensing wonks have started an advocacy site on low-frequency unlicensed wireless: Kevin Werbach, Andrew Odlyzko, David Isenberg, and Clay Shirky are a combined powerhouse of intellectual might and regulatory expertise. Their site promotes the notion of unshackling spectrum from outdated technical notions that restrict innovation. The FCC has become more and more amenable to these ideas, as it toys with rulemaking vastly different than anything that's come before. The site is funded by Microsoft. I had some back and forth with Werbach about what that means, and he has clarified the issue on their About page. Microsoft is funding their time to devote to the issue, but the editorial voice is independent. I know all of these gentlemen except Odlyzko, and can vouch that you wouldn't see the door hit their backside if there were a conflict of interest or an attempt to change their statements....
