Microsoft Creates Anti-Virus Bounty To

11/05/2003 10:59 AM
What do you if you're in an unchartered area with no reasonable law enforcement, and criminals are running rampant? You convince everyone to become the "enforcement" arm and find someone rich enough to pay them to help fight crime. Microsoft can't be bothered to fix a few of the holes in their programs that make it incredibly easy to pass on viruses, so instead, they're setting aside $5 million for anti-virus bounty hunters who can track down anyone responsible for worms, trojan horses or viruses. The rewards will be given out in $250,000 wads of cash from Bill Gates wallet increments. So, now, who's going to round up an anti-virus posse?

Is Osama Hot or Not?

Is Osama Hot or Not? 03/22/2005 04:37 PM
Dear Sex Addict, Is Osama Hot or Not? (Sunday Magazine, Vancouver) I think OBL is totally hot, but my friends think I’ve lost my sense of judgement. What do you think? Do you think Osama is hot or not? Some people find Osama sexy. He is tall and aristocratic looking. Personally, I could do without the beard. I imagine people find him sexy because he is an outlaw. Some people say they find Osama sexy just to be outrageous. I think he looked much sexier when he was younger (don’t we all?); lately he looks tired, old, not vibrant. One thing you can be certain of, though, is that Osama doesn’t find you sexy.

where skin porn and food porn collide

where skin porn and food porn collide 03/23/2005 10:09 AM

mmmm

It's fun to use google and see what it returns when searching for 'sticky buns' as, well, the imagination is a poor substitute for reality. When food and skin porn collide it gets fairly ugly pretty quickly. Sticky buns are likely the source of inspiration for the Finnish bostonkakku which are served like a pie rather than the individual buns. One of the guys at work quipped that it is served this way because you can feed 20 instead of 8 people.

I figured that since I was making dallaspulla that I'd make the inspiration for texaspulla and bostonkakku so that my test subjects would know just what they had been missing all these years. :) The dough is a snap to make even without a mixer and is much easier to work with than the pulla dough. The only drawback is the time spent waiting for the dough to rise. With a four-day weekend approaching where absolutely nothing will be open and we'll likely have crappy weather given that it's a holiday, what could be better than making a pan of sticky buns and eating them instead of chocolate eggs? These are, by far, the best cinnamon rolls I've ever made and my test subjects consumed them in a shark chum feeding frenzy. Two guys even asked me for the recipe.

Sticky Buns, a.k.a. caramel rolls or cinnamon rolls

Makes: 12 sticky buns
Time: ~30 minutes prep, 3 hours for dough rising
Source: Cook's Illustrated

This recipe has four components: the dough that is shaped into buns, the filling that creates the swirl in the shaped buns, the caramel glaze that bakes in the bottom of the baking dish along with the buns, and the pecan topping that garnishes the buns once baked. Although the ingredient list may look long, note that many ingredients are repeated. Leftover sticky buns can be wrapped in foil or plastic wrap and refrigerated for up to 3 days, but they should be warmed through before serving. They reheat quickly in a microwave oven (for 2 buns, about 2 minutes at 50 percent power works well); they can also be put into a 325F/175C-degree oven for about 8 minutes.

Dough

  • 3 large eggs at room temperature
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk (2 dl piima) at room temperature
  • 1/4 cup (.5 dl) granulated sugar
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons table salt
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons instant yeast  (1 packet sunnuntai dry yeast)
  • 4 1/4 cups (10,5 dl) unbleached all-purpose flour, plus additional for dusting work surface
  • 6 tablespoons (85g) unsalted butter, melted and cooled until warm
  1. In bowl of standing mixer, whisk eggs; add buttermilk and whisk to combine.
  2. Whisk in sugar, salt, and yeast.
  3. Add about 2 cups (5 dl) flour and butter; stir with wooden spoon or rubber spatula until evenly moistened and combined.
  4. Add all but about 1/4 cup (1/2 dl) remaining flour and knead with dough hook at low speed 5 minutes.
  5. Check consistency of dough (dough should feel soft and moist but should not be wet and sticky; add more flour, if necessary); knead at low speed 5 minutes longer (dough should clear sides of bowl but stick to bottom).
  6. Turn dough out onto lightly floured work surface; knead by hand about 1 minute to ensure that dough is uniform (dough should not stick to work surface during hand kneading; if it does stick, knead in additional flour 1 tablespoon at a time).
  7. Lightly spray large bowl or plastic container with nonstick cooking spray. Transfer dough to bowl, spray dough lightly with cooking spray, then cover bowl tightly with plastic wrap.
  8. Set in warm, draftfree spot until doubled in volume, 2 to 2 1/2 hours.

Caramel Glaze

  • 6 tablespoons or 85g unsalted butter
  • 3/4 cup (1,75 dl) light brown sugar, packed
  • 3 tablespoons corn syrup, light or dark
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream
  • 1 pinch table salt
  1. Meanwhile, combine all ingredients for glaze in small saucepan.
  2. Cook over medium heat, whisking occasionally, until butter is melted and mixture is thoroughly combined.
  3. Pour mixture into nonstick metal 13- by 9-inch (33cm x 23cm) baking dish.
  4. Using rubber spatula, spread mixture to cover surface of baking dish.
  5. Set baking dish aside.

Cinnamon-Sugar Filling

  • 3/4 cup (1,75 dl) light brown sugar, packed
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 pinch table salt
  • 1 tablespoon or 15g unsalted butter, melted
  • Raisins (optional)
  1. Combine brown sugar, cinnamon, cloves, and salt in small bowl.
  2. Mix with a fork until thoroughly combined, using fingers to break up sugar lumps.
  3. Set aside.

To assemble and bake buns:

  1. Turn dough out onto lightly floured work surface.
  2. Gently shape dough into rough rectangle with long side nearest you.
  3. Lightly flour dough and roll to 16-inch x 12-inch (40cm x 30cm) rectangle.
  4. Brush dough with 1 tablespoon melted butter, leaving 1/2-inch border along top edge; with butter remaining on brush, brush sides of baking dish.
  5. Sprinkle filling mixture over dough, leaving 3/4-inch border along top edge; smooth filling in even layer with your hand, then gently press mixture into dough to adhere. Add rasins if you desire.
  6. Beginning with long edge nearest you, roll dough into taut cylinder.
  7. Firmly pinch seam to seal and roll cylinder seam-side down.
  8. Very gently stretch to cylinder of even diameter and 18-inch (45 cm) length; push ends in to create even thickness.
  9. Using a serrated knife and gentle sawing motion, slice cylinder in half, then slice each half in half again to create evenly sized quarters.
  10. Slice each quarter evenly into thirds, yielding 12 ~1.5 inch (3,75 cm) buns (end pieces may be slightly smaller).
  11. Arrange buns cut-side down in prepared baking dish.
  12. Cover tightly with plastic wrap and set in warm, draft-free spot until puffy and pressed against one another, about 1 hour.
  13. Meanwhile, adjust oven rack to lowest position, place pizza stone (if using) on rack, and heat oven to 350F/175C degrees.
  14. Place baking pan on pizza stone; bake until golden brown and center of dough registers about 180F/82C degrees on instant-read thermometer, 25 to 30 minutes.
  15. Cool on wire rack 10 minutes; invert onto rimmed baking sheet, large rectangular platter, or cutting board.
  16. With rubber spatula, scrape any glaze remaining in baking pan onto buns; let cool while making pecan topping.

Pecan Topping

  • 3 tablespoons or 50g unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup (.5 dl) light brown sugar, packed
  • 3 tablespoons corn syrup, light or dark
  • 1 pinch table salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract  or vanilla sugar
  • 3/4 cup (1,75 dl) pecans or walnuts, toasted in a skillet over medium heat until fragrant and browned, about 5 minutes, then cooled and coarsely chopped
  1. Combine butter, brown sugar, corn syrup, and salt in small saucepan and bring to simmer over medium heat, whisking occasionally to thoroughly combine.
  2. Off heat, stir in vanilla and pecans until pecans are evenly coated.
  3. Using soup spoon, pour heaping tablespoon of nuts and topping over center of each sticky bun.
  4. Continue to cool until sticky buns are warm, 15 to 20 minutes.
  5. Pull apart or use knife to cut apart sticky buns; serve.

Osama in the booth

Osama in the booth 08/13/2004 12:11 AM
Over on the right side of the fence, we're hearing plenty of voices arguing that al-Qaida wants to see George Bush defeated. From where I sit, it seems equally or more likely that bin Laden and company would love to see Bush re-elected (he's been their best recruiting agent, in Iraq and elsewhere).

But really, to speculate on this subject either way is to go down a rathole. Who cares which candidate al-Qaida might favor? Osama doesn't vote. All that matters is, which candidate will best protect the American people, bolster the American economy, and help build a safer and more peaceful world for our kids?

But the prospect of an October surprise now looms scarily over the electoral landscape. And the most important thing we can do is to inoculate ourselves in advance against it.

The nightmare scenario goes something like this: Sometime in October, al-Qaida strikes inside the U.S. Either (a) Americans rally behind the president, even though the occasion of a second attack might cause us to feel the administration had failed us; or (b) though there might well have been little any president could do to stop the attack, many Americans blame Bush -- and that evokes a patriotic chorus of rally-round-the-prez from our leaders and our media, with sanctimonious cries of "Remember Madrid!"

It barely matters, then, whether the reaction goes for or against Bush. Either way -- if we accept, as U.S. intelligence reports, that "influencing the elections" is an al-Qaida goal -- the result will be an al-Qaida success. Unless we're somehow able, ahead of the fact, to draw some lines in the rhetorical sand.

The "influencing elections" debate began in earnest in March, when the Madrid attacks and subsequent fall of Bush ally Jose Maria Aznar's government led American conservatives to complain that Spain's voters had capitulated to al-Qaida in a shameful act of cowardice. Never mind that the overwhelming majority of Spanish voters had long opposed their government's policy of supporting the Iraq war; never mind that the last-minute swing against the incumbent government was sparked by disgust at the spin games it played in the immediate aftermath of the attack (when it tried to pin the blame on Basque terrorists). Details, details!

There was and is a blunt agenda at work in this gross distortion of the record: the party of Cheney and Rove is laying the groundwork to argue that, in the wake of an al-Qaida attack, it is our patriotic duty to vote for Bush. Otherwise, you know, the terrorists have won.

In a better world, the right thing to do here would be for Republicans and Democrats to agree, in advance, that neither side will attempt to make political hay out of circumstances surrounding another terrorist attack on the U.S. before the election.

I can't help thinking, though, that such a move would really be unilateral disarmament on the Democratic side -- because the Bush administration has broken every promise it has ever made about not turning terrorism into a political football. Since the war on terror is the only issue on which polls show Bush with any remaining appeal to the American public, it has become the administration's political cornerstone. And it is being micromanaged for Bush's personal political advantage.

Here's Tom Ridge, touting the glories of the president's policies out of one side of his mouth and insisting that his Homeland Security Department "doesn't do politics" out of the other! When all accounts suggest that it was an oversensitivity to political winds that led our intelligence astray in the Iraqi weapons-of-mass-destruction fiasco, here's the new choice to head the CIA -- a partisan GOP bulldog! And don't you Democrats dare oppose him, or we'll hang you by your obstructionist thumbs!

No, I don't think it's possible, given these players, to steer the debate onto the high road and keep it there. Instead, we'd all better keep on high alert between now and Nov. 2 -- not only for possible attacks, which remain a true danger, but for the outrageous distortions of the American political process that could result from them.

Of course, we can be thankful for little things: At least the trial balloon of p ostponing elections in the event of a terror attack seems to have been definitively exploded.

An audiotape purported to be from Osama Bin Laden, offers Europe a truce if it "stops attacking Muslims"...it's apparently genuine, and offers Europe an opportunity to reconcile with Muslims if the respective European countries pull their soldiers out of the Middle East. Europe (including Spain) has said no, saying it will not negotiate under threat of terrorism. The offer was not extended to the US.

Who would Osama vote for?

Who would Osama vote for? 07/20/2004 09:09 PM
Paul Krugman is one of the few voices in the mainstream media willing to speak plain truth to power, and he did a bang-up job with today's column, The Arabian Candidate. As he points out, Bush has done everything Osama bin Landen might have hoped for: The Arabian candidate wouldn't openly help terrorists. Instead, he would serve their cause while pretending to be their enemy. After an attack, he would strike back at the terrorist base, a necessary action to preserve his image of toughness, but botch the follow-up, allowing the terrorist leaders to escape. Once the public's attention shifted, he would systematically squander the military victory: committing too few soldiers, reneging on promises of economic aid. Soon, warlords would once again rule most of the country, the heroin trade would be booming, and terrorist allies would make a comeback. Meanwhile, he would lead America into a war against a country that posed no imminent threat. He would insinuate, without saying anything literally false, that it was somehow responsible for the terrorist attack. This unnecessary war would alienate our allies and tie down a large part of our military. At the same time, the Arabian candidate would neglect the pursuit of those who attacked us, and do nothing about regimes that really shelter anti-American terrorists and really are building nuclear weapons. Again, he would take care to squander a military victory. The Arabian candidate and his co-conspirators would block all planning for the war's aftermath; they would arrange for our army to allow looters to destroy much of the country's infrastructure. Then they would disband the defeated regime's army, turning hundreds of thousands of trained soldiers into disgruntled potential insurgents. ... Who knows? The Arabian candidate might even be able to deprive America of the moral high ground, no mean trick when our enemies are mass murderers, by creating a climate in which U.S. guards torture, humiliate and starve prisoners, most of them innocent or guilty of only petty crimes. ... Last but not least, by blatantly exploiting the terrorist threat for personal political gain, he would undermine the nation's unity in the face of its enemies, sowing suspicion about the government's motives. Unfortunately, Osama bin Laden doesn't vote. He uses the murder of innocents to get what he wants. What worries me is what happens when the two people with the most to gain from Bush remaining in power...

The fish that threatened national security. Lara Hayhurst, a student at Pace University, needed to take one small thing through the checkpoint at LaGuardia Airport: her pet beta fish MJ. This was, however, an apparent threat to the security of the airport and Lara's flight home to Pittsburgh for winter break. Flush the fish or become a felon? Read about Lara's decision and how the TSA forced her hand. Remember, when 2" long tropical fish can freely gain access to our airliners, the terrorists have... yada yada.
