David Pescovitz: New Scientists recently reported on the "non-lethal" Pulsed Energy Projectile weapon that fires a burst of painful plasma from up to 2 kilometers away. (Link) BB pal Vann Hall points us to a military contract, unearthed by the Sunshine Project in January, for the University of Florida to conduct a study on the "sensory consequences" of such a weapon. Ouch:

The full capability of these directed energy systems (DE) are still being explored. At their current stage of development, each system has clear non-lethal (ADS) and lethal (PEP) capacities... Our experiments will examine the feasibility of PEP as a new generation non-lethal weapon. Pulsed energy can be configured to produce plasmas of exceptionally high energy...

In the studies described below we will determine the feasibility of using the plasma derived EMP to induce pain suitable to disarm and deter individuals or form barriers to the movement of large hostile groups.

The MPAA's latest software offering (developed by DtecNet. Get it?) takes a very heavy "delete now, ask questions later" approach, offering parents the ability to "detect" allegedly evil music or video files on any computers their pirating hellspawns might have had access to. Parent File Scan, as it's called, "does not distinguish between legal and illegal copies." Essentially, it's the Kujo form of that Windows dog search companion, with a scent for MP3s and AVIs, ready to piss on your whole collection. And then delete it. That'll teach those kids to appreciate their culture!

Google had been getting a little bit of bad press here and there, but it seems like the whole Gmail thing opened the floodgates. Now, Declan McCullough is complaining that Google's SafeSearch feature is too stringent. SafeSearch is supposed to try to weed out adult content from the search engine, and it appears that Google's implementation is fairly simplistic - blocking out any domain that includes the word "sex," even when its part of something like PartsExchange or ArkansasExtermination.com. Basically, the story is that the SafeSearch technology is fairly weak, which is true of plenty of filters. Obviously, it's something that should be improved, but since no one is being forced to use it, it's unclear why this is so alarming. Besides, when asked, Google says they review sites that people bring to their attention as being inappropriately blocked. All this really is, is yet another example of why filters don't work very well - but if people want to use badly working filters, that's their choice.

It's not "What Hath God Wrought," but it's historic nonetheless: Connexion by Boeing launched its first commercial flight today, with flight 452 on Lufthansa flying from Munich to Los Angeles. The press release and photo were filed (also a first) from the flight at 35,000 feet. Connexion's commercial launch of a single plane is significant, but Lufthansa won't finish unwiring its 80 planes in its long-haul fleet until the end of 2006. In fact, it's possible that fewer than a dozen planes out of a few hundred committed will be ready to go this year.
