a reason to drop Microsoft Internet Explorer ... which, apparently,
people are doing at an increased pace, although IE still has something
like 93% of the market. But I currently have 31 instances of Firefox
open, each with 1-4 tabs. So, I'd like an extension that lists all the
open tabs in all the open instances. My dream extension would let me
jump to any of those tabs. It would also let me close them or close
multiple instances with a single click. And it would give...

Add or Remove Programs List
01/16/2004 01:02 PM
One thing that annoys me about XP is it's Add or Remove Programs
list. It just
gets really crowded over time as more and more software gets
installed and, well,
gets to a point where it is easier not to uninstall some unused
program because it's
tedious to locate it in the list. Windows Update doesn't help
either because
every update gets added to the list as well.
Please add categorized view for the list so we don't have to see
applications, development
tools and components, gadgets, utilities, and patches next to each
other. While
you are at it, add Recently Installed category as well and place it
at the top of
the categorized view. Oh, yes. Entries should be able
to appear in multiple
categories. As far as taxonomy is concerned, I can live with
one Microsoft dictates.

being removed without webmaster action from Google. They all are
getting the standard "you site has been removed" email from Google. We

is an isolated incident, or if someone has indeed figured out a way to
get people removed from the index (such as a competitor).

Change Your Linksys WRT54G Admin
Password Right Now!
06/02/2004 01:16 PMTech consultant discovers that Linksys WRT54G allows remote,
over-the-Internet administration login even when remote management is
turned off: Because all broadband gateway vendors ship their equipment
with default passwords like public or admin, this vulnerability is
moderately critical according to the Secunia security consultants. An
automated attack could scan millions of home broadband network
addresses and feed them the WRT54G Web login sequence. With remote
administrative access, the most that could happen is vandalism: the
Linksys doesn't provide tools via its Web interface for packet
sniffing, but someone could corrupt the setup and lock a user out by
changing the password, requiring a hard reset. Also, Linksys' Web form
appears to send the WEP or WPA password as hidden password text in a
Web form, but that text is unencrypted in the HTML source, which can
easily be viewed....

There's not much detail, but
there really doesn't need to be -- Linksys has announced a
CompactFlash card that supports their 'Wireless-G' standard, which if
I'm not mistaken is what they call their not-quite-standard
implementation of 802.11g. No word on price yet, but I wouldn't expect
it to be much more expensive than the Wireless-B versions. Looks like
the product number will be 'WCF54G.'

Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Broadband
Router Easily Exploited
06/03/2004 01:35 PM
Heads up, ye owners of the
popular Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Broadband Router. Even if you
disable remote administration, the router will still allow users
sharing your WiFi network to access administration web pages. That's
not the end of the world unless you haven't changed your admin
password, which if you're like most of us, coddled by fire-and-forget
technology, you probably haven't. If you aren't taking any more steps
to secure your router, at least do yourself a favor and change the
default password to something else, preferably not the name of a pet,
child, or the lady down the hall you've been sleeping with that you
think, hey, nobody knows about but really, seriously, we all
totally know.

b> [InternetNews via /.]
Update: Looks like it's not quite as bad as it could be,
as the exploit only works if the built-in firewall has been disabled
(it defaults to on). Still, wouldn't this be a great time to verify
your settings?

Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Router,
Notebook Adapter, $20 Gift Certificate
for $88
08/04/2004 01:31 PM
Okay, this on is a little
hard to follow, but it's worth it, so stick with me. Amazon has the
Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G router (the one that runs Linux that you can
flash with the magic firmware to make it do all sorts of interesting
tricks) bundled with a Wireless-G notebook card for $108 (there's a
"Better Together" link on the product page). If you buy both, you can
use the $10 rebate on both to save $20, then go on to qualify for a
$20 gift certificate on future Amazon shopping.
So basically you're getting a really nice, tinker-ready Wi-Fi
router for $68 with free shipping. Not a bad deal at all, but if you
still aren't seeing why this is a good deal, you probably wouldn't
want one in the first place.

Linksys Offers "Free" Router with Vonage

06/17/2005 03:19 PM Linksys has an interesting deal to tie in Vonage subscribers with
hardware sale: If you purchase a Linksys WRTP54G, their Vonage-enabled
two-phone-line 802.11g router, you can receive a total of $130 in
separate rebates with a trade-in. Here's the run-down: buy the WRTP54G
from a participating merchant with your intent to sign up for Vonage's
voice over IP service. The merchant will offer $20 off as a mail-in or
instant rebate. (Amazon.com is offering it as an instant rebate,
bringing the initial cost down to $110 from $130.) Next, fill out the
$10 Linksys mail-in rebate for the unit itself. The merchant will
include the form or allow you download it to print out. This $20 and
$10 rebate don't require the Vonage purchase, but it would be odd to
buy this model without planning on using Vonage. Signing up for Vonage
brings a $50 mail-in rebate after 90 days of service, while trading in
any older wireless router (no particular types are defined) adds
another $50. The Amazon.com downloadable form lets you apply for both
rebates at the same time. That's a lot of hoops to go through, and
it's not quite free--you'll spend about $5.00 on postage and
photocopying, and possibly an hour or two or your time filling out
forms and mailing items. The router must be purchased by July 23 to
qualify. The $10 rebate must be postmarked by Sept. 21 to qualify,
while the $50 or $100 form must be postmarked no later than 60 days
after the date of purchase on your invoice....

Remote Admin Problem
06/04/2004 02:13 PMLinksys has posted beta firmware for its WRT54G that closes a
potential remote access hole in its security: The initial report
indicated that remote administration of the WRT54G was possible out of
the box. The consultant who reported the problem checked other
WRT54Gs: if firewall protection is turned on (Linksys says this is the
default and users confirm), then the remote issue is non-existent.
However, some of the units that the consultant purchased to test had
firewall service turned off out of the box. A Linksys spokesperson
said that this release is labeled beta because other functionality
changes are in progress and not yet finalized. Linksys' official
statement reads, "For those rare few that do disable the firewall and
turn off remote admin on their WRT54G, Linksys advises those users to
download the latest beta firmware which is posted on the Linksys
website." I just purchased a WRT54G to test out its default
configuration, and I can confirm that I received a unit with firmware
v2.02.2 (which predates the 2.02.7 March 2004 release), and that its
firewall service enabled....

Linksys WRE54G Wireless-G Range Expander
06/18/2004 09:28 AMHot on the heels of Apple's
Airport Express comes Linksys's Wireless-G Range Expander, which at
$99 is cheaper than the Apple option, but doesn't offer nearly the
value, either. The WRE54G is only a range extender -- not an access
point, like the Airport Express -- and of course doesn't do all the
fancy iTunes streaming, which may or may not matter to you. It's
designed to work with Linksys's Wireless-G routers and extends both
Wireless-G and Wireless-B (the two 'almost standards' that generally
work with 802.11b and 802.11g) by plugging into any available wall
socket and pressing the 'auto configure' button. It's kind of fruity
looking, too, but in a mildly appealing Rebel Hoth base equipment sort
of way.
