Raleigh paralyzed by 0.7 inches of snow 02/01/2005 10:02 PM

We were hit by an unexpected winter storm today. It dusted the area with less than an inch of snow and paralyzed the city. Hundreds of kids are still stuck at school and many will spend the night there. We've got a couple of extra kids staying with us too. Folks are trapped in gridlock all over the area right now at 11PM, still not able to get home from work even though they left halfway through the afternoon. Folks are complaining about the school system's poor planning, the county's inadequate response, and the horrible gridlock. How do I know? They're snowblogging it on the WRAL site.

Krakow gives high marks to the MPx200, which runs Microsoft's new Smartphone operating system, calling it "one slick device" and noting that it's a marked improvement over Orange's SPV Smartphone which came out last year. He didn't have enough time to check out the GPS navigation features of the i730, but he did manage to find a few moments fawn over the design of the SL56. Read...

Verizon Launches SCH-i730 with Wi-Fi 06/24/2005 04:02 PM

vwsi730.jpgUh oh. I didn't know this was possible: Verizon has released a phone I want. The Samsung SCH-i730 is a WIndows Mobile device that has not only an EV-DO radio (I love me some EV-DO) but also Wi-Fi, which many thought Verizon would remove for fear they might not squeeze every last testicle dollar from their subscribers. It's $600 and only available to business customers at the moment, but it's lovely.

I've already got Verizon for EV-DO service with the PCMCIA card. I wonder if they'd let me add the phone service on, too? I might just have to see.

Coke Machine Hacks

Coke Machine Hacks 12/22/2004 01:30 AM
Xeni Jardin: HOWTO doc on hacking Coke vending machines by way of the drink selection buttons on the front display. Link (Thanks, Jason Sutton). Mirror one, Mirror two, and Google cache (Thanks, Dan, Jackson Baker and Scott M.)

Update:: Reader Chris Vincent says,

Just thought I'd point out that most of the content on those sites (including the Coke machine article) is verbatim from the Anarchist's Cookbook, a legendary collaborative document that can be found all over the internet. Everything from social engineering to fun explosives to (obviously) Coke machine hacks can be found there.

Another interesting bit of information, this time about Pepsi machines (not from the cookbook, just something I found out about last week):

New Pepsi machines have a "code", a special sequence in which you can push the buttons on the face of the machine, which causes the LED screen to report the number of cans sold and the total cash value. I'm not sure what that code is, and it may be configurable on a per-machine basis. I'm sure somebody out there can shed more light on it than me.

New: "Panther" Hacks 07/16/2004 09:59 AM

Mac OS X Panther Hacks

Mac OS X Panther Hacks 08/11/2004 06:15 AM
I finally got round to reading my copy of the wonderful O'Reilly Mac OS X Panther Hacks book, which, like all of the hacks books, is clever, informative, well-organised and useful; this one has the additional merit of having been co-written by my pal Rael Dornfest, who edits the line, and is witty, silly and very imaginative indeed. The hacks assembled in the text range from surprising things you can do with iTunes and iCal to hacking AppleScript to making OS X cooperate with perl and Python, but my favorite of all is the iOscillate: an iSight camera mounted to the top of a de-bladed oscillating desk-fan, so that the fan sweeps the iSight back and forth in a steady, 180-degree arc, covering all those seated around a table or in a conference. The hack is truly worthy of the appellation "hack" -- it's ingenious, funny, and actually useful in a seriously bent way. Link

True Meaning: We'll fix the game breaking bug about 3 weeks after the game's out, hope you guys aren't on 56K because it'll be a 186 MB patch. An update to the earlier story we had on a schoo ls being raided by the FBI for sharing music files, here's the news on a larger FBI operation to shut down a larger software, music and movies warez group. This makes more sense than just going after file sharing, but it still makes you wonder. There is this huge terrorist threat thing going on right now, and you would think that it might make more sense for the FBI to protect us from being blown up than to worry about people sharing music files that they can probably get on file sharing networks anyway.
