stations

Amtrak and AT&T Wireless Services Inc. have inked a deal to put wireless Internet access in six of the railroad's stations along the Northeast Corridor. "Amtrak is excited to be able to offer our customers another way to meld their busy schedules and the work they need to get done," Sally Bellet, Amtrak vice president of real estate development, said in a statement. "Our arrangement with a proven wireless carrier such as AT&T Wireless is just the thing to help keep Amtrak travelers and station visitors connected to their e-mail and the Internet."

Amtrak Planning More Wi-Fi

Amtrak Planning More Wi-Fi 01/27/2004 12:36 PM
Amtrak is planning to deploy hotspots in six more stations in the northeast: The setup may be different in those stations than in New York's Union Station where the network is only available in the first class passenger lounge. Amtrak has high hopes for the new networks, expecting to see around 1 million users a day. Amtrak hasn't announced whether the hotspots will be free to use or come with a fee....

Review: First Class Amtrak

Review: First Class Amtrak 12/06/2003 09:47 AM
It was a good thing I took the train from NYC to Boston last night not only because trains are one of the few modes of transportation that are actually enjoyable, but also because the snow storm felled the airports. But ... Pitney-Bowes sprang for the extra $50 for first class, so I tried it. Conclusion: Save your money. I couldn't see any physical difference in the first class car except that it was conspicuously filthy. Yes, they give you a mediocre meal. Yes, you get free liquor, but you'd have to drink a lot more than I do...

Susan Campbell: Think about this a moment, and then look into the shining faces of your loved ones. You didn't opt for the DVD option on the minivan, did you? And you will be trapped for hours in an area roughly the size of a kitchen table with the people who know how to push your buttons better than anyone. If you have kids, a DVD option is a wise investment.

Now this is odd. 1st Lt. Mark V. Shaney, of the US Marine Corps, posted a report from Baghdad today as a comment to a blog entry of mine from March 2003. That struck me as odd, as did his almost-coherent sentences and his giving as his URL a conservative site called The National Center for Public Policy Research. It occurred to me that perhaps the National Center was sending Shaney out to various blogs to post the same upbeat posting. I didn't find any similar posts, but Googling "Mark V Shaney" turns up the surprising news that he's...

Disneyland rides must be as safe as
buses
06/17/2005 03:34 PM
Cory Doctorow: Ernest sez, "Disneyland (and other thrill ride providers) have been fighting being forced to meet the same safety standards as buses and trains. Yesterday, the California Supreme Court ruled against them."
The 4-3 decision, which found that thrill rides could be classified as common carriers,' said operators must use 'the utmost care and diligence' for the safety of riders rather than mere 'reasonable care.'

Segway's response when asked asked the about incident is priceless: "Some people have questioned the safety of our product, but at least it doesn't bite back." Read...

Recreating gone Disney rides online

Recreating gone Disney rides online 12/18/2003 10:31 AM
Nice NYT piece about the ongoing efforts to rebuild old Disney rides as CGI, using the Web to coordinate volunteers:
At least two other sites are creating virtual versions of discontinued Disney rides: Adventure Thru Inner Space (www.atommobiles.com/cgi-project.htm), a Disneyland attraction that gave visitors the experience of being smaller than an atom, and If You Had Wings (dizneyworld.net/iyhw.html), a Disney World ride to exotic travel destinations. Although these re-creations have not been authorized by Disney, a spokesman said the company "appreciates their passion."

Why do Disney rides inspire such allegiance? "Disney is one of the few organizations that produce elaborate dark rides, that invest in story line," explained Cory Doctorow, a technology activist and writer whose recent novel, "Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom," is set in a Disney World of the future.
