Dean's Privacy-Invading Plan

Dean's Privacy-Invading Plan

Dean's Privacy-Invading Plan 01/26/2004 05:24 PM

Declan McCullagh reports that Howard Dean proposed a remarkably invasive national ID scheme. Dean needs to stop ducking and answer the questions. If he really is thinking along these lines, he's going to alienate a lot of potential voters.

Dean's bad idea 01/26/2004 12:40 PM
Declan reports on a bad idea put forward by Dean 15 months before he announced his run for the presidency (and six months after 9/11): Requiring users to insert an identity card — presented as an upgrade of today's drivers license — into a computer in order to log on. Apparently, the campaign is not responding to questions about this. It's certainly not an idea I've heard bruited about by the campaign, but I'm certainly not privy to every bruiting. (Thanks to Eric for the link.)...

Dean's dysfunctional "family"

Dean's dysfunctional "family" 03/06/2004 01:59 AM
Fascinating article in the Washington Post by Howard Kurtz about the dysfunctional nature of the Dean campaign organization. Reading it makes you realize that the notion that the campaign's infatuation with the Internet brought it down is a point of view that only someone infatuated with the Internet would propose. Far more destructive were the personal and organizational frictions caused by a small-town campaign suddenly going national. [Cross-posted at Loose Democracy] Dean disputes the accuracy of the quotes in the article....

Dean's MoveOn-ish Movement

Dean's MoveOn-ish Movement 12/02/2003 09:57 AM
The Boston Globe today has an article (the link will break tomorrow) about the Dean campaign's plan to ask its supporters MoveOn-ishly to raise money to support Democratic Congresspeople running in tightly contested elections. There are three obvious motivations for this: To take back Congress, to do favors for some Congresspeople who can return the favor, and to rebuild the Democratic base. That last one is the kicker. This campaign from the beginning has felt more like a movement than like a campaign (to paraphrase Natasha C). Given the zealotry of the supporters, it's even more surprising that the...
